The party was a blast. Good tunes good times. A friend recorded some of the cover songs we played and I would like to upload them to youtube so that friends and family can view some of the performance. Is it legal?
I have researched what is on youtube. It doesn't look like it is legal.
No money was made or exchanged for any of the party or the recording. No future hopes of using as a promotion to make money either.

I've seen tons of cover songs on youtube.  Don't know the legal aspects, but I imagine that unless the artist has an issue and contacts youtube, you should be OK.

Worst that would happen is that youtube would delete the video i reckon.  Looking at the number of covers on youtube, i doubt it happens much.

If you think from the artists perspective, would there be any real reason to object to covers being posted?  It isn't like file sharing taking money from honest sales.  I suspect many see it as free advertising, and are probably quite proud that people want to cover their songs.  That is why i personally think that is why so many get away with it.  I guess technically it isn't legal, but it is at the same level as recording off the radio/tv, copying a friends CD etc.

There was a thread a while back that ncognito started about posting covers, in which some members detailed the legal aspect.  I think the youtube thing came out as a bit of a question mark.  I'll see if I can find the thread and link to it.

Bingo -

Upload from a Barn Party. Now isn't that a curious mix of the old and new.

Good one hadden and ffink. I hadn't even thought about that. It was a very cool mix of simpler times mixed with technology of today. Lots of gear spread out across the wood floor in that loft.
I'll  probably try one song to start on youtube and go from there.
Thanks for the replies.
