I need a new portable recorder to replace my MD unit. My needs are as follows:
1. Must be able to record 4 hours
2. Must have line level imputs
3. Must be able to operate on battery and AC power
4. Must be compatable with Mac 10.4 and Garage Band
5. I need something in the $200 range (lower cost a big plus)
6. usb or firewire connector to transfer files to my computer
7. Card based storage
Thats basically it. I will use the recorder for vocal plus guitar for practice sessions and recording via a line in from a sound board or other source. I like the M Audio microtrack 2, but I don't think I can operate it for long periods of time while plugged into a power source. Any ideas?

The Zoom H4 might be what you want.  In addition to two built-in microphones, it has inputs for two microphones and/or instruments (via two combination XLR / 1/4" jacks).  Can record in either 2-track or 4-track mode.  The thing records onto an SD card, I think, which can go for hours with a 2Gb card (36 hours at low kbs, less at higher fidelity etc).  USB output to Mac or PC.  Runs on 2AA batteries or AC adapter.  I think the H4 is on ebay at or about $200

I have the H4 and it does a great job. I only do acoustic recordings using the built-in mics, however, so I can't tell you much about the other inputs.  They have a new H4N model with a lot of extra features

Now, if you don't need line-level inputs, the Zoom H2 is great for acoustic recordings using its multiple sets of built-in mics.  Lots of folks here have them (search for a couple of threads on the H2)
