A warning about Musicians Friend

The other night my toilet broke and I had to go into Wal*Mart in the middle of the night to get a part.  The situation dictated that it be fixed right away, so off to Wally world.  I got the part, but had to make my way past the friendly night staff of ex-cons stocking the shelves listening the rap music, but hey, on the bright side, the little box where I slid my debit card asked if my check-out lady greeted me....and it even asked me in English. 

oh the humanity! It's just a wonder you didn't receive a slighting remark from one of those ruffians.
I only will shop where all the employees look exactly like this.


It's fine to want things a certain way but it's not a sin to be different than you. Perhaps you wanting all of America to be like Mayberry is greedy?

Actually, my post contained nothing about "sin" or "Mayberry", so I don't get your point.  I just don't see that a place of business – any place of business – to be somewhere that rap music should be blaring while people are trying to shop.  You know, not all people like to hear rap music and not all folks can appreciate its colorful dialect or understand its contribution to society.  Poor, unenlightened souls that they are...  But thank God there are folks like you who are willing to build a bridge across those cultural lines and be so inclusive.  It's so hip of you, really.

I only ordered from MF one time. Out of the 4 items ordered they managed to mess up 5 of them. None of the items I ordered were shipped, but I received 5 different items. When I called I was told the packing list was correct and my order was complete. The computer showed the correct items shipped. The tele. rep. did not understand the contents of the box were totally different. I am guessing the person who ordered the items I received was probably not happy with their shipment either. I received a bunch of drummer things (could tell a stupid drummer joke), but will refrain.

It is the only time I ordered from them and will be the last too. Fortunately the guys on this forum are good business folks. (I've only dealt with Jason & Dave & Uncle Rob) but have heard good things about our other dealer members.

Tell you what, I'd really like to jaw back and forth with you on this --- it would probably be fun. But I'm not going to.  I've actually come to like you and actually wish that I wouldn't have posted what I did already.  So, I'm dismounting my high horse and letting this one go.

I finally received the balance of my last Musician's Friend order yesterday.  One month and one week after the order date.  Pretty dismal for strings listed as "in stock" when I placed the order.

I ordered a USB mic from Sam Ash & needed to talk a few times w/ someone (whereever they were) about the order.  Smoth as silk, it was.  The mic arrived on my doorstep (in NYC) a few days later. Whatever you may think of big box stores, they seem to have their act together.

Next time you need some strings, order some from Greg Boyd's.  I've been ordering from them and have gotten them in 2 or 3 days.

I just ordered some strings from MF last week with free shipping.  They arrived today (Monday) right on time.  No complaints here.  Their price beat everyone else.

FWIW,

I've had similar treatment in buying a laptop directly from Lenovo (IBM Thinkpad maker) this past winter.  Only after I threatened calling the credit card company and cancelling the order did it finally arrive with expedited shipping; weeks after I should have received it.

Also, my one actual guitar purchase from MF went as such - I was buying one of those OLP music man copies for dirt cheap, and when it arrived, on time, it had terrible fret ends - a proper fret dressing job would have cost as much as the guitar.  Also probably the noisiest single coil pups I've ever heard.

I called up MF to ask for my money back and they promptly sent me a free return shipping label without putting up a fuss.  Money showed back up on the credit card in only a couple days.  Pretty hassle free.

Shopping at GC however -

Speaking of GC....

I had some time to kill the other day and went in.  The staff all seemed too busy counting each other's piercings to be of much help.  I actually wanted some help and wanted to check out a product, but it didn't happen. 

I laugh everytime I leave that place. Customer service is a foriegn language in there.

I had it out with them once, trying to return something after making 3 trips at almost an hour each way  I had to write a letter to the company, then the staff was all smiles... at least to my face

Regarding GC, I really don't have any issues with the one near us.  Of course, it varies.  Some stores are lousy, others are pretty darn good.  GC stores are staffed by humans, like us.  Besides, we always have the option of buying elsewhere.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJVNkiSEnnI

I was in our local GC the other day (Oxford Valley, PA) ready to buy two guitars. The sales guys were all busy chatting with one customer and I could not find anyone to sell me what I wanted. So I left.

If I walked into GC or anyother guitar store ready to buy a guitar and no one would wait on me, I'd certainly let them know I was there.  Not only do I get to "vent," but I have increased the odds for them taking more money off of the guitar.
