Has anyone here played or owned a Larrivee ukulele?  The uke has been drawing me in lately and I seem to be coming down with a minor case of "Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome".  Hey, if I have to have a uke, at least it should be a Larrivee, right?  They are pricey...is it worth paying the extra $$$, or should I just find a beater to see if I really like the instrument?

Larrivee don't make ukes.

But I understand the desire for a uke - I just succumbed to this Koa beauty....

They don't now, but they did.  Here's one at Elderly:

Larrivee DID make ukes but they don't anymore  :crying:

Among my many ukes, I have a Larrivee concert uke. It sounds good. As good as any recently built uke I have played and I am glad I have it. It's not for sale. Yet, for the money you'd have to spit for one, (and especially if you don't plan on "collecting" ukes), if I were you, I'd get myself a nice vintage Martin (NOT the new SO!). Much fuller, rounder sound. IMO, you'd get more for your money. But don't get me wrong: they are good worthy ukes.

Wow - you learn something every day! Canadians making ukes! Aloha.

Looks nice (except for the peghead which looks too big).

Denis,

I didn't see the Larrivee uke at Elderly. Did you just see it or is it a pic you downloaded a while ago?

I wanna Larrivee Concert Uke.
I bid on one a while back on E-bay, did not get aggressive enough and did not win.
I don't need it, but ......
I have a 1926-27 Gibson Tenor and a Tangi Koa Concert.
The Tangi is a great uke and reasonably priced, but I want a Larrivee.

There are a few Larrivee Ukuleles out there for 1400 bucks or so for solid koa...These alternatives you are mentioning are good recommendations.  Any more I should look at?  It has to be a quality instrument (any custom builders??)...I guess I'm not GASsing but UASsing for a new Ukulele :humour:

I've had a Harmony uke for decades - a real beater, and last year I bought a baritone.  I recently bought a Chinese uke from Ebay for $12.00. They are fun instruments. As much as I'd like to buy a Larrivee, I can't see myself switching from guitar and personally, I could never see myself spending too much on a uke. That said, however... I never thought I'd buy a parlour guitar either.
You really have to decide the worth for yourself. I suggest buying a "disposable" one to see if you like it. Good luck!

PortHueneme,

I have never dealt with them, but Sylvan music have a few Larrivee ukes.

All the other retailers I know of do not have any Larrivee ukulele. They are really getting scarce...

Well, jwb, if you are UASing, you are UASing

In that case, treat yourself to a nice ukulele. Forget the novelty item. Find a Larri or a vintage Martin or Gibson. Older Kamaka sound great too (I've never tried the newer ones).

There are a few good ones among the new builders. GString make some nice ukes. James Hill plays their ukuleles. Personnaly, I really love the ones that Uke Brand make. They are fine quality reproductions of vintage Martin and Kumalae. Another fine builder is Augustino Lorinzi. Joel at Earnest Instruments is another fine builder that comes to mind.

The new fine ukulele builders may cost more than a vintage Martin or Gibson, but they are new instrument and they are really nice. You can get them customized as well. Of course, you have to be into ukes to go that route. Otherwise, you can alway get an old Harmony or Regal.

No matter your choice, don't forget to put the best strings you can: Aquila Nylgut strings for the best possible tone  :guitar.

P.S. unclrob, you should post a pic of the uke. It is so beautiful that it'd be great if the others had a chance to see it.

Richard,

Where are you seeing the pictures of unclrob's uke for sale?  I'm not the one that bought it if it's gone...I just PMed him a few minutes ago and waiting back on a reply.  I hope I do get a chance at purchasing it.  It sounds like a really nice instrument!

Sorry jwb. Maybe one of the Larrivees I mentioned above (in Reply #9 on: March 27, 2007, 09:00:38 PM of this thread) would please you? Good luck in your quest.

P.S. Thank you PortHueneme for taking me out of my misery. I was torturing myself with the idea of getting unclrob's uke and it's all better this way (I really must control my GAS -- and UAS).
