I know Ron is the resident member infected with MAS.  Since we are on the topic I want to ask Ron, what's the major practical difference between the SM58 and Beta 58 for voice recording?

These are the main differences between the SM58 and Beta58 (from the Shure website):

Beta 58 versus SM58:
Polar pattern: Beta58 = supercardioid; SM58 = cardioid

Output level: Beta58 is 4dB hotter than SM58

Handling noise: Beta58 is quieter than SM58

Grill: Beta58 has a hardened grill that is very difficult to dent

Frequency response: Beta58 has extended low end and high end compared to SM58

Both mics are designed for live use (and have a frequency response tailored to punch through a loud band mix), not recording, although there is no reason you can't use them to record with.

So I guess it's just which ever you prefer.

Yes, there is enough difference in the characteristics of each mic, and how they respond to your particular voice and style, that you really should audition them before buying.

Hi everyone - thanks for all the great information and advice everyone has given me. I ended up with a studio pack Audio Technica that came with the AT2020 and AT2021. Thanks to exPatCanucks great soundclips and recommending this mic. I also picked up a Zoom MRS-1608. Work has been so busy lately though that I have not even opened the boxes for either! And tomorrow is Sat and I gots to go back to work on the weekend!
