Looking for a place to post songs on internet

  I have been recording my own stuff for about two years now at home and I gave out my cd as Christmas presents last year.  I'd like to be able to start sharing some of my music by posting it on the internet.  My cd isn't one that I'm taking to stores, but I'd like to at least make it available to friends, family and (hopefully) even a few interested strangers.  Does anyone have a favorite site where you put up your music?

I'm looking for:
A site that is serious enough to be safe (noone is going to "steal" my material and make money on it),
but nice enough to be useful (people can listen or even download for their own pleasure.)
Big enough to be easy.
Fits a productive, ambitious musician who might not become famous.  I actually like my day job.
Doesn't cost- or at least not much.
Doesn't have virus-laden pop-ups

Once you post music out there anyone can "borrow" your music - it is not a function of the website you choose to stop that.

If you are really concerned about this then start with registering your CD with:
http://www.copyright.gov/register/sound.html
then go to http://www.ascap.com/index.html  and sign up

If you are not too cheap to spend a few dollars a month for a rock solid website then check out
http://www.hostexcellence.com/documentation.php

Post again when it is up and running and let us hear your stuff.

Yes, I'm hoping that people will take it, just don't want them to claim to have written it.  The copyright is on my "to do" list right above the internet access.

I was just looking at sound click, it looks pretty up and up but low key.  Anyone have experience with it?

Take a look at  http://www.broadjam.com/   it's a very professional site.   I have some songs on there that I posted over a year ago.  You can post 3 songs for free and other members will review them for you.  You can also review other's songs.   You can post 50 songs with a $50 per year membership.  It doesn't have pop ups, people can visit and listen to your songs without having to register or provide an email address.  They only accept original material of course,  unless you have a mechanical license.
No matter what site you post on, there's always the chance someone can steal your song idea unless you have a copyright.   I'm sure my material isn't worth stealing so I don't worry about it for now.   :GRN>
Search for my song  "Wellandgood"   I also have one called "Rattler"    I have a couple more on there... but they stink.  ^_^

Thanks for the warnings about risk, I'm pretty aware and not TOO worried-  maybe just enough to keep my ego active. 

I really like your songs and even went looking for the stinky ones afterward. It's great inspiration.  The site itself looks nice and I'm making my way through the somewhat overwritten FAQ.

Thanks.  I don't think my cd is in "sellable" condition right now, but it's a good ambition for the future. 

Ric-slo, I've just gotten through reading the hostexcellence pages and I'm still fairly confused about what it is.  Do they have a template like broadsound or soundclick for musicians, or are they simply a server that will host my sight (presumably that I have made or had made for me)?  It looks very good, but I'm not really up to designing a sight right now, though the prospect is tempting.  Tell me what you know.
