Quote from: ducktrapper on February 11, 2023, 01:37:27 PMWhat did Hunter S. Thompson say? "When the going gets strange, the strange get going"? Or maybe it was weird and not strange.

The quote is classic Hunter S. - but it may be apocryphal . . . the most common version is:

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn professional."

I've looked for years, but darned if I can find the actual "text"? Maybe it was audio in an interview?

Needless to say searching on the word "weird" gets a lot of hits in Hunter's works.

For a long time I thought I remembered it from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" but it doesn't turn up in a search of that text:
https://web.mit.edu/tibbetts/Public/fear_and_loathing.txt

Not in "Hell's Angels" either:
https://toleratedindividuality.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/hells-angels-a-strange-and-terrible-saga.pdf

goodreads.com says the source is from "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail",  but still nothing like that quotation:
https://archive.org/stream/in.ernet.dli.2015.118228/2015.118228.Fear-And-Loathing-On-The-Campaign-Trail_djvu.txt

(There is however a great passage where Hunter is selected by Richard M. Nixon to accompany him on a limo ride to the airport because Nixon wanted someone who could talk about football)
So maybe this quote may be an internet creation, built around a feeling more than an actual piece of writing?

Anywho - here's a wonderful remembrance of H.S.T. by Lyle Lovett:

I think Mr. Lovett dedicated the performance (or even the composition?) of "Don't Cry A Tear" to Mr. Thompson on a DVD that accompanied the release of "It's Not Big It's Large"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsUNl2NcTl8

The whole DVD is well worth tracking down
