I had that done with my acoustic twelve - makes fingerpicking a lot easier!

Re-work one to a Rick string setup{octive on the inside} Great electric 12 string, tried to steal it from my client but he said no. :crying:

If you keep watch on eBay they go for pretty cheap brand new. I got mine from Manny's Music in Brooklyn. Was less than Danelectro's cheapest 12 string and way better materials and build quality. Same seller has my color (Trans Amber) and a Cherry Burst model for the same price I paid. PM me if you want to know what I paid.

I've tried fingerpicking a guitar set up that way and find it almost impossible.  The angle is just wrong for my thumb on the EAD strings.

On the other hand, I have recently become a convert of swapping just the G course strings, and I ordered my Emerald set up that way from the factory.

I'd try to find a used Larrivee and remember, the 12 string market is both tricky and erratic so be patient.

I bought an Ovation 12 string Pacemaker new back in 1977 for $250 which was the only guitar I ever sold a few years later (because of the neck) for $300.

Fast forward to 2005:I love the sound of a 12 string and it's nice to have one  After playing a wide range of 12 string models in the $300 to $2,000 price range  I decided to order a 12 string Larrivee with a few tweaks including a mahogany top and Venetian cutaway. My cost out the door was $1,000 and it was one of my best purchases. I played it for two hours on Saturday and after 14 years, it has only gotten better with age. My decision to buy the Larrivee was based on the year I spent with my parlor purchased a year earlier.

You'd win that bet. As far as the 12ers go, I never set out to buy any specific make or model, I just kind of stumbled on them and liked them enough to buy them.

I wouldn't mind finding a used Larrivee 12.  I've learned most of all that buying guitars in a hurry usually ends up meaning a let down later on.  I find just wait till I find a Larrivee for $400-$500, or an older Taylor for around the same price.  I'm in no hurry.

curious to know if anyone is even open to considering the idea

I went to GC today and tried out one of the Guild 12-strings with maple backs and sides.  Tag was $499.  I was actually pretty blown away by the sound and feel.  I'm not sure why but I'm concerned about one of these holding up for the long haul.  It's probably a needless concern, especially since I keep my guitars tuned down a whole step anyway.

Rob, how long have you had yours?

You could almost buy two to fit in this thread! I tune my acoustic 12 down a step and capo, as well. It's not like I'm playing much up the neck on it. The electric I tune to concert. So are you going to buy one?   :cheers

I am very similar: my acoustic stays tuned down a full step (mostly to accommodate singing in higher keys, but an acoustic guitar, in my opinion, just breathes more and sounds better like this), but my electric (do not currently own one) is tuned to concert.

Parsimony is a hobby of mine along with guitar playing, so I've not bought anything yet.  I'll post it should I get something.

Update:  I went back to GC today with cash in my pocket and with the intention of buying the Guild 12-string.   I tried to deal with the manager for a hard case and he ended up coming up with a figure somewhere around $570.  I offered him $540 in cash and he wasn't interested in playing ball, so I walked away.   I just thought the price was too high for what I was getting.

On the drive home I realized how little I'd probably use a 12er anyway.  In fact, I played it for about a half hour and exhausted most of my interest in it then.  With my parsimony fully intact, I rather like the feel of those 100-dollar bills in my pocket over a new guitar in the house.

That's how I feel about them. A half hour a month is about it and for recording should it be required.
