In which I evaluate a recently acquired Hercules GS415B against the Ultimate GS-200 stand I've had for a few years, using instruments sized from a concert uke to a 5 string Ibanez SR series bass.

To me, the best stand is one that folds up to nothing and takes up almost nothing in terms of space when fully deployed.  In this regard, the best stand I have come across is one I have that is made of steel.  It has "It's A Hamilton" crudely stamped on it.  That's the only identifying marks I can find on it.  It folds up something like a music stand.  I don't remember how I got it, but it's the best one I have come across to date.

Hamilton music stands (for holding sheet music) are great. The Ultimate GS series for guitars fold down pretty small as does the Hercules with the Ultimate winning that category by not having to come apart. That was the main reason I bought it a few years ago. However as I point out in the blog it has some issues with how it contacts the body on my acoustic and classical guitars and interferes with the jack on my bass and electric guitar, kind of defeating its purpose in life!
