I got another one of those ' YOU WON ' emails.
My finger was poised over the delete key.
Then I noticed the email address.
It was a local guitar shop.
Still, I was thinking it was bogus.

Turns out I won a $50 gift certificate

I had gone to a mini concert / workshop at the store a couple of months ago.
World famous finger style guitarist John Knowles (a frined / contempoary of Chet Atkins) was the featured guest.
I almost did not fill out the register to win handout - but did at the last minute.

I very seldom win anything so this was a pleasant surprise and Christmas gift !
...it funded a purchase of strings and thumb picks.

Merry CHRISTmas to all here on the forum - you are all winners in my book

Too bad it wasn't your choice of new guitars hanging in the shop though...  

I WISH    - what a candy store they have !  - lots of expensive acoustics, they are a Martin and Taylor dealer
and many other fine guitars.
They recently gave away an electric AND acoustic guitar to one winner -  I missed out on that drawing  

So, how was the workshop?  

I was impressed with John Knowles as a teacher. I heard him play at a Chet Atkins Appreciation concert here in the Nashville area
a couple of years ago.

This time it was a mini concert / teaching about an hour long - with him playing most of the time but maybe 15 minutes of
teaching and suggestions.

He is that rare combination of scientiest / artist - John has a docters degree in science (Physics maybe ?)
- was friend / contemporty with chet Atkins - composed some for him as I recall -
and I think he did transcriptions of Chet and maybe Jerry Reed's work too.

Yet he seems very ' down to earth ' , friendly, teaches in an easy to understand way.

He has a web site and has started up a finger style publication.
