I use several whole room humidifiers both in the store and in my guitar room at home but I have a Dampit in every guitar case I own. If one of my guitars is in it's case than a Dampit is in the soundhole. Honestly I don't think there is a beans worth of difference between one soundhole humidifier and the other and I have tried them all. The most important thing is to make sure the outside of whichever unit you use is completely dry before inserting it in the guitar. If you don't want to deal with mold or having to bleach the unit every few weeks, just use distilled water.

BTW, all of these units come with clear instructions.

QuoteMy luthier told me even though I live at the beach and there is humidity, the guitars do not absorb salt water.

Humidity, or moisture in the air, has nothing to do with whether or not it you live near saltwater.
Salt does not evaporate.  Unless you are close enough to the beach to have salt spray, i.e. droplets of water, containing salt, which are formed by breaking waves and wind, the humidity is fairly close in nature to distilled water.   If there were salt in the air, you would notice a residue after surfaces exposed to that salt spray had dried.  You would get salt build-up on your glass windows.  If your guitar were exposed to salt spray, you might see salt residue on its finish.  And any electronics would be prone to corrosion. Your computer, for example would be at risk.  This more often happens to people who live on the beach, not near the beach.

I'm totally sold on the Oasis Humidifiers. I think the secret to these is in the Humigel. I've been told that the Dampit kind of humidifier can promote staining or even rot if they are not dried off before inserting them in the sound hole. I also used to have a Planet Waves humidifier but that went with the guitar when I sold it. The thing I like most about the Oasis: you can tell when it needs refilling.

I'm totally sold on the Oasis... Oh, I said that.

Collings OM2Hc (EIR/Sitka)
Schenk Ophirio (Sapele/Cedar)

I have a Crane 2.1 gallon ultrasonic cool mist humidfier in my man cave plus an Oasis hygrometer in the case and one in the room to monitor.  Have a few Dampits if needed.  Like the Crane becasue it runs for 18 + hours if turned at lowest setting.
