My wonderful old Yamaha FG 180 never gets coated strings. It just sounds and feels so nice with D'Addario or Martin pbs I've never thought of changing. On the other hand, I would have to change the Yammie's strings a lot more if it was my only guitar. So it all works out!  :guitar

I remember working at a music store which was a lot of fun when you're 20 years old!  We used to stock most of the FG and CG series Yamahas back then along with Takamines, Sigmas and Ovations.  I was doing all the shipping and recieving so all the new acoustics were tuned up and first played by me.  I'll never forget those 80/20's on new Yamahas.  They were really bright and full, often even on the laminated models.  I've got an old FG-325 I bought online for $50.  It needs work but it's solid as a rock!

It might be fun but in the early 70's I worked in a record store and usually ended up paying them for the privilege.  :laughin:

Elixir nano 80/20 custom lights on my L-03 and my Martin 000-15S.  My Sigma DR-41 needs beefier strings to get the top moving, so I use D'Addario  EXP19's on it.

I find that each guitar is different and I like various types and guages, all 3 of my guitars have non standard guages on them as in mixed from standard. Thicker basses or trebles from "standard".
10-1614 more than a number, it's body and soul.

i broke down & tried the cleartones, 13-56. i'm a week into them & i'm absolutely diggin' them. i'm not putting too much stock b/c the first set of strings never count for much of an opinion. its like the honeymoon, nothing's wrong. but i am surprised that so far i have no complaints. i'll keep you updated as the journey continues...

I tried thes on my OM-21 and they were too much, Dean Markely Alchemy Gold Bronze CLs. I'm switching to EXPs or EJs. On my LSV also.

I've experimented a bit over the years and have settled on the D'Addario bluegrass sets (EJ19). It's a cool hybrid with medium gauge bottom strings (great for bass runs and a little weight to the strum) and light gauge top strings (good for flat picking). I found that the mediums just didn't "shimmer" enough for me and the lights didn't have enough balls. These EJ19s provide both.
