Anyone used the Curt Managan Coated string?

Has anyone used the two types? I have used the Curt's uncoated but noticed when I went to order they now have a coated string set too. Has anyone had experience with both the un-coated and the coated and can discern much difference? I liked the un-coated and actually, they had a good life span for me, but getting a longer use is always an interest for me if I don't have to sacrifice tone.

When the Martin SP's had the SP+ available I thought I'd give them a try and they were, excuse me if you liked them, but in a word terrible. I guess that's the reason they are no longer available. Just don't want to go through the same experience with the Curt's if I can get some input from those who have used them.

I use the Mangans exclusively and they last as long (and sound better) than other coated strings I've used. I didn't even know they made a coated string. I'd be hard pressed to believe any string would be better than the regulars. If I my string supplier ever chooses to stock them I might have to give 'em a try.

I usually use Strings & Beyond & went to place an order and these showed up:

Curiosity costs me money a lot of times so I thought I would ask 1st this time. I use DR Sunbeams as my usual string but like the Curts real well too so I will change out once in a while for the different sound they are a darn nice string. I am spoiled by the round core ease of fret and bend thing though so I use the Curts as my alternate. Aren't guitars cool, different tone is just a string change away.

I haven't tried them yet either...I think they are very new...but am interested...been using the regular Curts on all my guitars lately and loving them...but some coated ones for the guitars that don't get played as much sure would be nice.

Fred, are you using the Mangan strings on Rosie ?

to all-
I bought a set of Mangan 12-52 med-light fusion matched phospohor bronze string to try my next set on my Recording King.
Is that what you guys are using ?

Please describe your results with them compared to other brands.

Larry,
Rosie is currently wearing a set of 11/52s (Curt calls them light ga). My Larri and Collings have the 12/54s (med-lt 80/20s). Most of the strings I've seen are .012-.052 for light ga. I was worried about Rosie having something 'called' med-lt so I wrote to H&D and promptly got this message back from Jeff Hill, the national sales manager:

(my e-mail first)
Hello,
I just purchased a 00-SP (used) and, of course, you recommend light
gauge only strings. In looking at your web-site I find you equip new
guitars with D'Addario lights (.012"-.053"). I have been using Curt
Mangan Med-Lt (.012"-.054") on my Larrivee and Collings guitars and
love the strings.

My question is: does the .001" difference on the bass side pose any
potential hazard to this model or can I use the Mangans without fear
of damage?

fred

And Jeff's reply:

Fred,
12/54 strings will work just fine.
Thanks,
Jeff

I like the strings because they stay crisp for an exceptionally long time. I've had the 11/52s on her since 12.30.09 and they're still going strong. I'm down to 2 packs and really don't need new ones on any of my gits but I think I'll go to my closest source (16 mi) tomorrow and pick up some more because I want to try the 12/54s on Rosie and put the 11/52s on the OM. Of course, if my dealer is handling the coated strings I may just need to try a set. I can't believe they could last longer than the fusion matched, though.

Larry,

Yes I'm using the 12/54 PBs and I love them...I bought a whole case through my buddy Little Brother who gets a good deal on them.  They last quite a bit longer than other uncoated strings I've used and don't have that muffled tone that I notice with most coated strings.  These are now mu go to strings from everything I play.

I made the trip to my supplier and he was saying that Curt was trying to get him to stock the coated string. He's not even a music store (sound studio / supply) and he said the only reason he's still carrying the Mangan's is because of me. He can't afford to stock something with a low turn rate that costs almost 3 times as much as the uncoated. I can't blame him and I really think the only reason Curt is playing with the coated technology is due to Elixir's success (but that's because of Taylor).

I'm staying with the fusion matched and buying from my local (16 miles) source as long as he'll carry them.

Well I guess I am just going to have to try these, I ordered a set of PB COATED for my 12 string which has the 80-20 Un-coated on now and has had for probably 30 hours of actual play time and although the strings are still ok it'll be time to clean the big ole box up and change strings by the weekend. I love playing my 12, it gets almost as much play as the DV09. I am not a fan of coated strings but the Curts are a top line string that has given me decent life and good tone so I'll try a set. The Sunbeams are just a tad mellow in the highs, especially for the 12 string but I do love the feel. The coated PB Managans may be the ticket for that one. I'm kind of jazzed to try something new and different.

I just put a new set of 13-56 Sunbeams on my DV09 6 string,  and strung it with a 14 for the E and a 18 for the B.  I really think I'm liking the heavier trebles with these, but what can ya tell the 1st day. I'll have a chance to play it up a bit this weekend so I know if I really am going to stay with that set up too but it sure sounds good right now, not overwhelming but definitely a bit more in the highs. As nice as the Managans are I do prefer the bass and mids of the Sunbeams, and they feel wonderful, they are just a bit weak in the trebles, but I think this is they way to go for that one.

Since these must be brand new I e-mailed Curt Managan to find out if these were another plastic coated (polymer, or whatever fancy name for synthetic stuff) and if I might expect flaking as they wore out or what. Here is the response from Mr. Managan:

"We are using new patent pending, proprietary technology that we call TC1500. In microscopic terms, we alter the molecular structure of the metal's surface and the fusion that occurs creates a permanent bonding that won't rub off leaving the metal several times more resistant to tarnish and corrosion without compromising the tonal quality of our non-coated strings.
Hope this helps and hope you like what we are doing.
Curt"

They sound like a permanent change in the metal instead of a sleeve over the string, I am actually really looking forward to getting them now for the 12er, heck I think I am going to try them on the 6 also if I can get a 14 & 18 to match for my B & E.

I have them in my favorites list as Strings & Beyond, I had to check:

http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/

Hmmm could they have 2 sites now? BTW, you can buy Curt Managan strings by the single string for custom gauges too from the Managan site but not S & B.

http://www.curtmangan.com/products/single-strings/

SO when I ordered a couple sets yesterday I got a couple 14's and 18's to replace the 13's & 17's, I'm really liking that blend, Thanks Unclrob!

Michael, you're correct.  Both sites have the same contact information.
I received email from strings and beyond (that is where I always order from), needed strings so I clicked on the freebee link (a sampler of planet waves polish) and it sent me to String This. Didn't even realize I wasn't in the right place, threw the strings in the cart and headed to the checkout. Noticed when they came that the shipment was from String This. I thought they must just be in the middle of a name change    guess not.
They must have had the link for the promo in their email send to String This customers and copied it over to the mailing from Strings and Beyond.
Actually the String This site says they have been on the internet since 1999.
BTW the receipt had Mikes  personal little thank you at the bottom.

Yeah nice touch, I noticed Bob Colosi always adds a hand written Thank You too on his receipts, I wonder if they realize how much impact that has, it impresses me. BTW on that subject I recently e-mailed Curt Managan about their coated strings and the response was signed by Curt, which for a simple question impressed me, their site does not have much info etc on it so I imagine there are a lot of e-mails to review so that impressed me too, personal involvement is important or at least acknowledged.
