Sold everything else but my Larrivees and one old Fender Palomino that I don't play anymore.  Ten I bought a custom Morgan OM-flamed mahogany.  It plays a lot like my Larrivee but with some quite notable differences in tone and feel due to David Iannone's special touch.  I love em all.  My Morgan is a real nice addition to my Larrivees.

Acoustically, I have a Washburn branded Bourgeois Dread. Pretty classic Martin HD28 style build, from what little i know about guitars. This is Bourgeois's Standard D with some client specified bling. Narrower nut than my larri....different wood (sitka RW vs Sitka/Hog) and different finish (gloss v satin). So pretty much WAY different...which is great. They don't compete, they're harmonious compadre's in my arsenal

Many Gibsons and Fenders, a Rik and a Taylor and a few others all pale to most of my Larrivees - well different animals really for the most part - I luv em all

As far as acoustic guitar is concerned it's pretty much all Larrivee all the time except for the rare occasions where I play the old Martin copy "Mountain" dread. that I picked up awhile back.
On the electric side it's generally the Gretsch Country Club.

My son has a nice Taylor 214 (Spruce over solid wood (not laminate) Sapele back and sides) that I have first right of refusal on if he ever wants to sell it.

Here are my four main guitars and each is #1 depending on the day of the week and the mood I am in. In other words, none of them are for sale and they all get pretty equal playing time.

Martins (Spruce over rosewood sides and 3 piece backs)
D-35 Neck width 1 & 11/16 hand carved "C" neck
OM-35 Neck width 1 & 3/4 Low Profile Neck

Larrivee (Spruce over maple back and sides)
Parlor Neck width 1 & 3/4 with short scale and a really fast neck

(Mahogany over mahogany back and sides)
LV-03MT 12 string - Neck width 1 & 7/8

I have Martins and a Bourgeois.  Like to have guitars with different tonewoods, and guitars of different sizes.  All are 1 3/4, but as I play more, I find that it is less and less difficult to play guitars with different nut widths, string spacing and even neck shape.  Just takes a little time for the fingers to adjust.  Currently 'one over' on guitars and deciding how to get down to 4 (+the LX).

Great question.  My other guitars are Martin and Recording King.  My Larrivee is a Custom Shop 005 quilted hog 12-fret (1 3/4" nut), the Martin's a '76 000-28S (1 7/8" nut), and the RK is an ROS-16 (1 13/16" nut).  I think of the Larry as a Grand Piano: clear, clean, strong, each individual note well defined. The Martin's my Symphony Orchestra: lush, rich, shimmering, rich in overtones.  They both stay home.  The Recording King's my travel and gigging guitar: worry free and fun.

Guitarwise 2 Larrivee's L-10 and 000-50. But also a Gallagher G-50. Good old bassey American dreadnaught that sounds way different than any Larrivee.
I'd like to check out a Larrivee Mandolin but no where to do that around here that I know of. I have2 mandolins. A small shop custom and a Michael Kelly F for bluegrass.
Octave mandolin Trinity College which is pretty good archtop without being up in the 2G plus range of really good ones. Don't play it enough to justify that but we do use it on several songs when we play out. Not in "typical" irish stuff or anything like that but to rock on!  Like tuning it to open D and doing World Turning or Know You Rider. It cool and fun.
I got a Smith and Young (National) resonater just this year and it's a great machine. Sounds incredible. An Epiphone Sheriton with 57' Gibson pickups. And some other misc stuff.           I played another great Collings just the other night. If money were no matter, one of those would be nice. Snata Cruz same but this Collings the other night was really special.
So I think there a place for other guitars for sure, that are different. But Old L-10 is hard to beat for versatility. It's still what I use for gigs after 30 plus years of continuous service.

Guilds,
I have two Guild 12-strings and should really like to pick up a nice F-20 someday.

Breedlove,
Play a US Build Breedlove if you have not done so, the sound is very "Larrivee like" but somewhat louder and more responsive due to the JDL system.

Rainsong,
Yes I have strayed down the Carbon Fiber path.  A nice wood guitar sounds better, but a guitar that does not need to be watered every week is a godsend when you live in Arid-zona.

I just have my two Larrivees now. Before that I had two Marc Beneteau OMs. A bunch of others have come and gone.

Next up for me is a small body Larrivee to keep the others company.

Voyage Air, Go Grande, locally made OM, a travel guitar I made, and a Morgan Monroe small body short scale 12 string, 3 string cigar box guitar...  for acoustics.

Guild Starfire III, Fender Jaguar, Casio PG-380, Squier Telecaster, kit built electric 12 string, Maestro no-body electric,  and a couple other home made electrics.

Then there are the "other" instruments...  uses, keys, synths, drums, etc.

My Larrivees (both parlors) get the most time these days.

I have no acoustics other than Larrivee. I have a fender stratocaster that I love though. I've played a couple of Santa Cruz guitars that were very nice though.

I have been playing my Epi 00 quite a bit lately, I can take it out and not worry about it as much as my Larrivees. It's also a nice size and has that Gibson radius neck which helps me barr chords much easier. It's also a pretty little thing, being a total sunburst model.
Also playing the Lakewood Dread and the Norman Dread 12 string some.

My Larrivees are far and away my favorites though :nice guitar: s

I have an old Takamine G330 (made in Taiwan, all laminate) model that I bought new in 1993.  It played and sounded great to my untrained ear way back then, and it's only gotten better.  Some will tell you all lam guitars won't age, tone-wise, and some may not, but this one has.  It has a wonderful, dry, old-timey sound that's perfect for old Country songs.  I recently had it looked over and set up by a professional; he also installed a bone saddle.  Man, what an improvement.  Honestly I play this guitar as much as I do my Larrivee and like it just as much.  They are just very, very different guitars that do different things very well.  It's odd but I had it under a bed for years and never touched it; then one day I just had an itch to get it out again and start playing it.

This was my first acoustic guitar and I'm glad I've kept it all these years.  Best $269 I've ever spent.

The other day I took the Martin D-18GE out of the case and played it for the first time in a while.  Flatpicking it, I was smiling right away at how timeless and sweet the sound that this guitar makes.  I could live with just this guitar, but am happy to have others.

Well said. My Martin is a close brother o yours; same bracing etc. but different topwood.  Pretty much sounds the same as a GE  and it is always a 'Wow!'  I could never give up my L-09 either. The others in my sig? I wouldn't mind reducing by a couple but love them each to the point I would have to be under great duress, so they stay and I play them and think 'This is good, I know why I bought it.'

No matter what I play, either owned or not owned, my Forum I OM-03MT hogtop is still my go to favorite guitar to play.  But I've got a cool sounding Eastman OM mahogany short scale and I'm a big fan of Green Mountain guitars, a small boutique builder.  I am having an OM built, I currently have a Green Mountain sloped dread fanned fret walnut that sounds amazing.  It's actually for sale b/c no matter how much I try, I just don't do well with that size guitar.

Seems I go in cycles when it comes to playing different guitars.  And it also depends on which guitars are newer, what situation I'm in regarding playing or practicing with a group or band,  which one(s) I've tweaked recently, etc.

For example, in the last 6 months and not counting my 2 Larrivee's, the acoustics I've played the most are my 2 Norman B-20's (Mr. Sunshine, and it's recently acquired 12-string sister).

As for electrics and excluding my Larrivee Forum V, my Gretsch pro-jet and my recently acquired Peavey semi hollow body which I installed Larrivee pups in, have gotten the most play.  My Warmoth Tele and MIJ Squire strat have gotten the least.

When I think about it, it's kind of silly to have as many guitars as I do.  Some of them only get played every few months or so.  I get them out to see how they are doing in terms of truss rod adjustment given the change in seasons, and to remind myself how they sound and play.  I would have a hard time saying which ones I like the best.  I just appreciate that they are different.  My goal is to set them up so they play and sound to their full potential.  So I'll get them out, tweak them, play them for a few days, then put them down and pick up another one for a few days.

I'm still rolling with my Eastman E20D. Definitely has gotten better sound over the last 2 years and glad I didn't sell it.

I can borrow a friends 70's Martin D35 or D41 if I need to.  That D41 is beat up, but sounds amazing!

Do you mean what guitars we'd love to play or what we actually play?  :bgrin:
For acoustics, I love European guitars as there are Lakewood, Lowden, McIlroy, BSG and some other smaller builders. Larrivée is the big exception. At the moment, I am playing my old faithful Lakewood acoustic. But my Larrivée should arrive soon, hopefully.

Godin Nylon Multiac, Takamine F360S & F385-12, Ovation Std and Custom Balladeers, Taylor T5 / K22 / & GS Mini, Gold Tone Roundneck / Banjitar / Guitarmando, Fender Roland Strat, G&L Legacy Strat, two acoustic and two electric builds..........  I am sure I am leaving something out.

There's actually 3 Guilds there, but I suspect you're asking about the mini jumbo? the front one?
Had a chat with George Gruhn about that one, he feels pretty much responsible for the introduction of that guitar, and a few other cool things at Guild, unfortunately, he's pretty bitter about not being acknowledged for his contribution to the company.

I think he said they only made 187 of them. Nice big maple sound, a tad brittle, and lacked sustain, at least the Larrivee sustain I love so much.

The other two Guilds are the fallen angels of the Fender mistake, BOTH nice guitars, one was rosewood, the other mahogany, had the psuedo fixed neck with the inside bolt on for neck angle. I guess it was a failure, again I liked them both, but neither could ever hold a candle to the JCL's so, out the door they went.

My Martin 000-16SRGT custom from My Favorite Guitars.  It's a sweet combination with the Forum IV.  One is an all mahogany 00 and the other is a EIR/sitka 000.  Both are 12 fret neck guitars and have 1 3/4" nuts.

Typically, I like the 1-3/4" nut but my Rod Schenk has a 1-13/16" nut that I really enjoy, too. I'm totally fingerstyle if that makes a difference.

Besides the Larrivee's I have just one, the Recording King ROS-16 that I haven't had out of the case since last fall. It's not a Larry but it is a fine sounding and playing guitar that I don't have to worry about taking on a boat or playing around a campfire. With all the home improvement projects going on its hard to find time to play 1 guitar let alone 4.

My main guitar is the Larrivee L09. 1 3/4 nut width...love that for fingerstyle. I have an old Ovation Legend that I use for strumming lots of bar chords as the neck is narrow...not good for fingerstyle and lousey bass. I have an American Standard Strat a 1965 reissue Epiphone Casino...really nice guitar...I use flatwounds on it. Since I play fingerstyle almost all of the time now I am usually playing the Larrivee. I am however lusting after a James Goodall Jumbo...nicest guitar I ever played...1 3/4 nut width. I'm getting a K&K pure mini put in my Larrivee and an Orchid muting DI and a Fishman Loudbox mini....as always, when funds permit....or I win the lottery.

I'm down to 1 guitar now ~ my '92 Larrivee L-05.  Quite a few guitars went through my hands before settling on this one.  Has everything I want.

I primarily play mandolin now and both the kids have their own mandolins. My oldest son (11) has an American made telecaster that he got about a year ago and he loves it.
Dad: Pomeroy F5
Tai:  Weber Yellowstone
Ekou: Breedlove Spirit

We are currently having an Octave Mandolin built by Lawrence Nyberg (http://www.nyberginstruments.com) .  He lives on Hornby Island, BC and used to work at Larrivee in the early 90s.  He builds wonderful instruments and are in a league of their own.  We are looking at an April delivery date.  Here's a picture of a mandola that he lent me over the holidays.  I came so close to taking up the mandola  :whistling:

Here is a link to the build thread over on the mandolin cafe Nyberg OM build thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?101874-Lawrence-Nyberg-OM-Build-Thread)

I'll try to upload some pictures and link them here.

I have picked up a new Godin 5TH Avenue Kingpin II Cognac Burst. Very nice sounding archtop, anyone else play these? I originally bought an Ibanez Artcore, but after a month I noticed a significant hump on the neck near the 14th fret, I took it back , the dealer said they were having trouble with the humidity in the new store and this could have been a result. I checked the same guitar on display and it had the same condition, I decided to give the Godin a try, It has been a month and so far, so good.

I see this thread has expanded to include a variety of stringed muses...
Other than my two acoustics that I mentioned earlier, I've got a Fender Am Std Strat, a Heritage 535, a Heritage 150, a Benford Tele, and a Larrivee RS-2. Of all of my guitars, the RS-2 has been getting the most play time the last couple of months. My place is getting a lot of work done so I put away all my gear, but for the RS-2 and my Boogie DC-2. Both bomb proof. Even in name, they just seem to go together.

A Lito Benito G\A rosewood B\S Alerce top 3000 year old wood from chile a wonderful sounding acoustic.
Also an old 1971 Yamaha 12 string it has that old folk sound you don't really hear in most 12's
2001 Taylor 655ce 12 string a joy to play all the way up the neck and easy on the eyes.
But still waiting for my favorite larri 6 string genie headstock to come back to me :crying:
Out of 5 different electrics I only ever pick up the cheap Yamaha pacifica [pine body] great necks on those
One day hope to buy an OLson acoustic but have to win the lottery first

I have reduced the number to four guitars in possession, the Larrivees and this seagull. It's an artist folk. I installed a b-band AST in it and it sounds good. It may be for sale soon to help fund some new gear.

My profile signature has the list of what I own, but my most recent purchase (this week), is pictured in the following gallery.

A rare 1967 Josh White Ovation. A 12 fret to the body, slotted headstock, handlaid shiny bowl.
It was made in Ovation's second year of production with Josh White being the first endorsee of Ovation,
and also the first African American to have a signature guitar.

While youre there, I have photos of my larrivee om03 MQ (from the 12 fret store's advert) and my recent purchase
of a  beautiful 2004 Parker pm20 electric with quilted bubinga top...very pretty.

Hope you enjoy the pics. These 3 guitars look and sound wonderful. Feel free to check out all 3 albums.

Small world - I just traded a PM20 Bubinga (plus a Breedlove Atlas Studio C250/EO and Loar LM 500) as part of the deal that brought home my new D-40R.

My other instruments are a 1977 Martin M-38 (bought from the original owner back in '78 or '79) and an early (ca '80?) Stelling Staghorn banjo (original owner). If I ever get past newb status (donuts already delivered in a previous post) I'll put up some pics of the whole family.

Craig,
congrats on the larrivee!

how did you like the Parker? I like most everything about it other than the pups. I'm thinking about putting some paf's or '59's in it.
The bubinga top is stunning.

I agree about the bubinga. In fact, the whole appearance of the guitar was gorgeous, though I would have preferred one with the original "hockey stick" Parker headstock than the later 3+3 that I got. Just not as distinctive. Other than that, I have to say that I don't really know electrics that well, but it seemed to play fine. Overall it was part of a failed experiment.  :winkin:  Elderly said its truss rod was maxed out and its neck needed a heat press, but it seemed to play in tune to me. If anyone wants to see it, it's on Elderly's website under vintage and used instruments/solid body electrics/parker, at the bottom of the page. For that matter, the Breedlove Atlas Studio C250/EO is there as well, under vintage and used/flat-top/breedlove, again at the bottom of the page.

Acoustic - In addition the Larrivee L09 I have a 1982 Ovation Legend....the ovation has a very narrow nut width and a poor bass response so I use it as a strummer and flatpicking. Its my old standby...like an old friend. I use the Larrivee for fingerstyle almost exclusively because of the 1 3/4 nut width and beautiful tone across the board.

I have
*  my 35 year old Ibanez dreadnaught (all laminated, but well made in Japan)
*  a 1957 Harmony Monterey archtop that was a gift from my best friends father (he bought it new)
*  a 1994 Pimentel classical, made by the father of the Pimentel family, who died a number of years ago (cedar/rosewood)
*  a Recording King 000, solid top, lam. hog b/s, slotted headstock, 1 7/8" nut...

...all lefty, except the Harmony, which I have temporarily converted to lefty (it can be converted back).

I know most of this conversation is about Larrivee ACOUSTICS, but a few of us have also ventured over to the dark side of Larrivee ELECTRICS...mine currently are an RS-4 and RS-2, used to have a Bakersfield, but I'm juts not much of a Tele guy...

...so I also play some other electrics... six Warmoths I've put together over the years, an Epiphone Elitist Les Paul, a Carvin Fatboy and Carvin DC150 (which is for sale), a Yamaha 335-style I got recently (mentioned in another thread here), and...

...coming back home after about a year with a fellow lefty on the east coast, my Gibson SG Standard is on it's way back to me this week - will arrive Thursday or Friday.

When I got this '09 SG, it had been badly modded by the previous owner; EMG pickups, and they only used one V/T on it - to make room for the battery inside the control cavity. So they GLUED the other two V/T knobs to the top of the guitar (what repair person does this? See pics below). I "restored" it to stock - my version of stock, because it has a pair of LARRIVEE humbuckers in it, and they sound delicious! Nice to hear what they can do in a Gibson scale mahogany guitar!

Anyway, that's enough jawing for now, here's a few pics (from when I had her before). A couple "before" (w/EMGs) shots, and a couple after...

I do love my Larrivees and they are my only acoustics (well, technically I still own a Mossman 12 but it is on a long term loan). But I do love my electrics too. In order of longevity I have a Guild X-170:

An American Standard Stratocaster (that is probably going to be a forced sale):

A '90s Custom Telecaster:

A Gretsch 6120DC "Nashville":

Gretsch Electromatic 5422-12:

A Guild Starfire 5:

And my latest toy (which is going to cause the sale of the Strat), a G&L ASAT Thinline Deluxe. The pickups are Harmonic Design Z-90s:

My '06 OM-03R is still my go to guitar and a cherished gift but my guitar build project gets most of my attention for obvious reasons. Next on the list is a custom ukulele made by my friend Tim McKnight. My Martin D-16GT is next but it doesn't get much play time My '06 OM-03R is still my go to guitar but my guitar build project gets most of my attention for obvious reasons. Next on the list is a custom ukulele made my Martin D-16GT but it doesn't get much play time at all. Then there's my '98 American Standard Fender Stratocaster which hasn't been out of its case in a long long time and my '89 Kramer Striker which gets even less attention.

So in addition to my Larrivee OM-09W I've got a Taylor 710CE, a Martin D41, a Baby Taylor (Bubinga), an Epiphone Masterbilt solid maple, and a Taylor T5 12 string (cocobolo), which I'd sell or trade in a minute for something else, as I've never bonded with it---though it's a wonderful guitar.

In that case, Lynn, you really need to consider the "new" Lancaster (or is it "Santa Monica" now - I can't keep track of the names of Larrivee's electrics!). You need some single coil/Stratty goodness in that tonal mix!

In addition to my Larrivee OM-03, I have an old Fender F-35 circa 1979 or so, that I love, was my first full size guitar, a Samick Greg Bennett D2 that I bought for campfire beater purposes (a surprising fun and good sounding instrument for the money) and a Fender CD-220SCE that I bought for open mics, it's nowhere near my Larrivee in terms of materials and fit and finish but it's a solid top and well built guitar that puts out a decent amplified sound.

Different guitars for different purposes and I love them all.

The Gretsch I'd love to have is the Chet Atkins one ... is it the Tennessean? Anyway, it's the one with the curved wang bar on the Bigsby in dark wine or walnut... but they run around $2800 - $3300 new. Finding a lefty used won't be easy. Oh well...

I realize this is not what Tio Kimo had in mind but this is what I play when I am not playing my Larrivee's.  Although, I must admit that the old silver back don't see much action these days.  If I have free time to play music it is usually spent on guitar.  If I were to own a guitar other than a Larrivee, I have been salivating over the Brook Taw and the Brook Taw Custom they have at Shoreline Music.  Quite nice.

I'll soon be playing one of these - a lefty Epiphone Casino Limited Edition!  (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-limited-edition-casino-left-handed-hollowbody-electric-guitar)

The only thing "Limited Edition" about it is that it's a lefty that's not in their regular line. They have 3 or 4 lefty Limited Editions available right now (for 2014); this is the main one I'm interested in.

I ordered mine locally and am getting a very good price - $550. Which means I can afford to pay the tax locally AND get an Epi hardshell case for it. Not bad...

...the downside is that the local store called in the order and was told "30-60 days". I'll wait...

I did play the righty one the store had and am very impressed with the quality of materials and the build. These are made in S. Korea, not China, a plus in my book.

The Casino will have to cover my gas for now.

I'm being very tempted by a guitar I don't need ... (GAS is chronic, isn't it?!)

The local shop got in a used lefty Takamine dreadnaught with a nice solid cedar top and hog b/s (probably laminate?). Made in Japan. No pickup. Comes with hardshell case. The neck on this thing is incredible! Action is actually just a tad LOW - I had the sales guy tweak the truss rod just a hair, the action could stand to be raised just a little more to be perfect for me. Dead on straight neck, though.  It plays beautifully up and down the neck and it sounds very nice.

They have it priced at $425, and he said I could have it for $375.

I've become a real sucker for Japanese made guitars lately - they're always top notch materials and workmanship, and I think Japanese guitars will continue to increase slightly in value (esp. when we get out of this tanked economy!). (Okay, okay ... I'm also tender about Japanese stuff cuz my daughter lives there...)

Do I need it? NO! But it's so nice to play, and it's saying "Put a pickup in me and use me when you don't want to endanger one of your Larrivees..."

:whistling:

See, we can always justify GAS!
Title: Re: OK, WE love our Larrivees, what else do you play?
Post by: Mikeymac on July 25, 2014, 12:17:17 PM
And, alas, GAS struck yesterday and the Takamine came home with me!

It is in very good to excellent shape; a couple small dings and very slight wear right under the high E string where it looks like someone rested their finger (& nail). As I said, comes with hardshell SKB "Takamine" branded case also in great shape, however it's got a nasty glue smell inside that a few of my older Carvin cases also suffered from. I have it open in the basement with a couple of room air fresheners in/near it. I may also have to try an open box of baking soda in it with the case closed for a few days.

I've also learned from research online that this guitar is all solid woods: cedar top and hog b/s/neck. Very simple wood soundhole rosette and body binding, satin finish. Gold "Takamine" branded tuners with what are called "tortoise pearloid" buttons. Neck is just two pieces - with the typical heel extension glued on. (See pics below - from online, not my actual lefty.)

I'll need to take it back for some minor (free) set up; it has one or two frets that need some minor leveling, and they may have to raise the saddle just a hair, we'll see. The nut slots also need to be lowered; surprised this wasn't addressed by the previous owner...

...who left the original sales receipt (from the same music store) inside with all the original case candy. So I know he originally paid $699 + $110 for the case, so $809 plus tax in Sept. of '05. Somewhere online I found the original MSRP of $899, I believe.

So do you like how it sounds and plays or?

How it sounds - yes. It's a little drier sounding than the typical Larrivee sound. So different is good (but not as "good" as a Larry, you know?)

How it plays - yes and no. I like the action and shape of the neck, BUT, boy how I wish it was just a little wider at the nut. I WILL be getting the string spacing widened a little (not a lot of room to widen, but even a little will help). When making chord shapes that put a finger on the B string, I constantly mute the high E unless I'm really careful. I'm just used to the 1.75" nuts on my Larrivees (and a few of my Warmoth electrics, too). It will also help to lower the nut slots - that may be enough to fix the muting issues; we'll see. I'll do that myself on Monday.

Playing it back to back against my D-03, it's pretty obvious that the Tak has a cedar top - you can't drive it like you can the D-03 - MAN - that thing can produce some volume when you bear down on it! I LOVE IT!!!

The Tak really excels more at fingerstyle and lighter strumming. For this reason it's a good candidate for a pickup, and I'm thinking of just having them put my Baggs M1A from my C-10 in the Tak, and I'll get some thing different for the C-10. I hate having the sound hole filled up on that guitar with a magnetic pickup - just destroys the aesthetics.

Enough for now... yeah, I like the Tak, it's a great grab and go guitar for when the Larrys would be at risk for damage or theft. I just have to adjust my playing style a little.

Don't want to hijack this thread, just one more post on the Takamine.

Rather than cut a new nut, I decided to first lower the strings at the nut and see how much that would take care of the playability issues. With the strings lower at the nut, it solved the problems of muting adjacent strings while fretting. And now it plays so much easier/better and in tune on those cowboy chords!

So I believe the problem is solved, and the nut looks much more professional now (since I also took off all the extra material so that the wounds strings are sitting around 50% in the nut and the B and E are about 80% in the nut. A little sanding with 600 and 1500 grit paper and it looks very good. New set of Martin SP phosphor bronze strings and it's sounding even better than before (I think it had D'Addario 80/20 bronze on it).

I love all my Larrivées but my Huss & Dalton CM (Eng/RW) produces an almost heavenly tone, so full and rich... it blankets you with it's lovely tone that you do not want it to stop...

The variety of tonewoods and the tones produced by the various combinations is fantastic....

My excuse... I never learned to count  :humour:  ...or... I thought she meant 3 of one kind...   :whistling:   and I only have 3 Larrivées...  so I think I'm good, right???

I try to keep them hid in the closet when I'm not playing them but the closet is very crowded right now...  :winkin:

Actually, I will be cutting back starting early next year....  she is right and 3..... or maybe 4 is enough...  really gassing for an archtop now...

I do have the most wonderful and understanding wife  :+1:  and today we are celebrating our 35th Anniversary...   :nanadance  :nanadance  :nanadance

That's quite a milestone - congratulations (we're moving toward 32 years...).

You could celebrate by having her buy you an anniversary present with 6-strings...  :whistling:

Nah, 83 isn't that old.  We were very young when we got married.  We'll be 69 when we hit our 50th.  I just showed your last post to my wife and she is laughing now too.  In truth, she doesn't know how many guitars I have right now, not off the top of her head anyways.  (Happens to be 6 acoustics and 5 electrics).  It's not that I keep it hidden from her, just that she hasn't bothered to count lately.  I get this look a lot:  :rolleye:

I also have 3 "project" guitars that I am working on and will probably sell, but you never know if one or more might turn out to be "keepers".   :whistling:

great tone and tasteful playing.
thanks for sharing the music!

Hey, thank you.  Total outlay for the entire rig is under $700 - and I paid significantly less than that.  That's one reason I think that you can get great tone and playability in electrics for far less than in acoustic guitar world.  I absolutely love that Epiphone, it's a steal - and the Zoom G5 is quite fun as well, and anyone who says that they can hear 'digital artifacts' or some other comment like that, I think they are blowing smoke.

I love my Larrivee L03,Also have a Strat ,American made stain finish,with a small Vox tube amp ,that is very fun to play.Also have a Composite Acoustics Cargo,that goes on trips with me.I have recently played a couple new Martin HD-28s that were very sweet ,,and that bass,my gosh they sounded good! I wish a Larrivee dealer was closer to me so i could play some of the higher end models.To hear how they compare to the HD28.For the price of the Martin I'm sure I could have a real nice Larrivee.Ill have to check into this further,any comments?javascript:void(0);javascript:void(0);javascript:void(0);

This thread leans toward acoustics, but I recently picked up another electric that is worth mentioning here: an Ibanez AM93L ('L' for left-handed). It's a semi-hollow that's smaller than standard 335 size; closer to Gibby/Epi 339 models, with Ibby's own 'signature' horn shape.

The guitar is very well built (made in China); chose of woods, while laminates, is very good, has a three piece hog/maple/hog neck (somewhere between a Gibson '50's and '60's profile - a little beef on it).

Hardware seems fine; stays in tune. It's gold, so it will probably wear quickly, oh well - lefties can't be choosy! Neck and fretwork are excellent, even the nut is will cut with strings low enough not to require immediate attention.

The reason I got attracted to it is it has Super 58 pickups in it like some of their nicer models. Whether these are made in China as well, I don't know. They're low/vintage output with nice highs, and even though the controls are wired backwards, they work well enough for now. I suspect upgrading to full size pots and better caps will only improve the tone somewhat.

The smaller body is very comfy - and a bit lighter than a 335 style. Hangs well on a strap, sits well on your lap.

Here's a couple good demos of the tone that I think are pretty helpful/accurate:

Sweetwater demo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfls5mS_u-0)

Yanda's Music demo (right here in Nebraska!) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-btJipiI0E4)

Here's pics of mine...

Besides my Larrivees, I have a 1977 Mossman Winter Wheat, a couple of Martins and I have two guitars that were built for me.  One is a Langejans W-6, made by Del Langejans of Holland, MI in 1996.  It has an Engelmann spruce top and walnut back and sides.  The other is a Konkoly KD-21A, made by Joe Konkoly, the head repairman and luthier at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, MI.  It has a red spruce top and EIR back and sides. That one is about a year and 1/2 old.

Del is no longer building.  I am not sure how many guitars he built but mine is #800.
I met Keaggy once in Del's workshop.  I think he has 3 Langejans guitars.
This is not the greatest photo but I shows the cool looking walnut back.  It has a Baggs Dual Source pickup and curly maple binding.  The center strip on the back is also curly maple.

Well, as usual, I am late for the party, but like all of us, I love my Larrivees.  You can see specifically what all I have in my signature, but I am a lot like Uncle Rob - I love Guild acoustics, too.  But, my Morgan OMM is my favorite Goto guitar.  This was//is a great thread.  Wow.  What a wonderful stable between our little group!  Some that stuck out to me - the 1977 Mossman (made in Winfield, KS), the Josh White Ovation, the Gallagher G50 mahogany Dreadnaught, the Green Mountains, and all of those Martins.  "Sweet dreams are made of these!"   :guitar  :nana_guitar  :nanadance

Nice review of the DST. I actually like all of its specs except the gold tuners, but as you said, that's easily changed (I'd go with some Grover open backed tuners). Do you still have your D-21 Special? I didn't see a review of it on your sight...

...Martin just came out with a new model - I think it's called the America One (?) - but it is all USA sourced woods: Adirondack top and braces, Sycamore b/s, Walnut bridge, fingerboard and headplate.  I played one at a local dealer and was pretty impressed - except that it is priced @ $400 MORE than a D-18 Standard (I suspect because of the Adirondack top).

Martin is making some excellent guitars these days - in spite of the large volume they're also cranking out.

Yes. I still own the D-21 Special. It's one of the best guitars I have had! The blog is just an occasional thing I started earlier this year, and I'm mainly planning to use it as bonus material for my students. Maybe at some point I'll write a thing about the D-21 Special, especially since Martin has reintroduced a much different version of it.

I agree that Martin's solid wood dreadnoughts are remarkably consistent. They work from a great basic recipe. So as long as they practice good craftmanship, the results should be there. Also, I'm a bit jaded about some of the "cork sniffing" applied to various models. There are differences up and down the line, and I'll concede a certain amount of difference between guitar models. But as I said in my blog, I don't believe people who say they can identify a neck joint by ear. The key is always going to be the top wood and bracing, followed by things like scale length, bridge material and design, body wood, etc.., Most Martin mahogany dreadnoughts are going to sound pretty close to a D-18. Rosewood D's sound close to a D-28. My D-21 Special sounds different than a D-28. But I think lots of us - maybe even me - would be fooled easily in a blind test.

The other thing Martin is doing is offering more dreadnoughts in a more affordable price range that have a wider neck. That's a good development for a lot of us who don't just flatpick these things.

Larrivee uses a slightly different basic recipe to get a signature sound, and their guitars are just as consistent. But different.

:coffee :donut :donut2 Please don't tell my wife about the donuts! 😇

This non-Larrivee is one that I just fell into a lucky deal on.  It has to be one of the premier guitars in my collection right up there with my D-10 BZ and Northwood MJ80F.  It is a Bourgeois D-Vintage Aged Tone with an ultra silky torrefied Sitka Spruce top...  Sounds incredible.

The Collings (forum) gathering is this week in the Hill Country around Austin. I went to most of the events last year and played a new Collings 00, borrowed from a friend.
That 00 sounds so big and so nice. I think it may be like the one Mark has.

a couple vintage Godin guitars in the house now.
Mint "burl" Artisan TC, one of kind and a spectacular playing guitar.

Very lovely Godin "Flat Five" (24 fret) nice fat "woody" sound.
Both guitars are older, and have the best intonation imaginable.
top shelf materials and workmanship.

I don't believe people who say they can identify a neck joint by ear.

Normally I can hear the difference between a Martin D-16 (simplified neck joint) and D-18  (pre 2012)  but that's because the bracing is also different to accommodate the M&T/simplified dovetail join.  The 16 style is usually brighter sounding.

With scalloped and shifted braces?  Be pretty hard to tell the difference I suspect.   I'm guessing this is a very responsive guitar.

Not a fan of gold hardware either, but I rather like the blacked out headstock overlay.  And you can never go wrong buying from Ted.  I'd like to see a pic of the entire headstock with the martin Logo against the black though.

2 things.....

1)I think there is more difference between 2 of a given model than the difference between neck joint on different models.

2)Sometimes we hear what we want to hear.

I agree.  I think the advantage of being able to "reset" the neck on a bolt/screw-on neck guitar relatively easily, outweighs any sonic advantage a set-neck guitar might have.

Other than Taylor and some Breedloves, most "bolt on" necks are also glued, so they need to be steamed off just like a dovetail.  Martin claims that their bolts only are used to hold the neck in place while the glue dries, but I still wouldn't recommend removing them just for kicks.

Once the neck is off, adjusting the angle is easier on an M&T than a dovetail, but most of the labor is still in getting the neck off.

That's you, but there are players who would rather have that "slight sonic advantage" that might be there with a dovetail neck joint. Otherwise why would so many builders/luthiers still be using them?

That's true for those who can actually hear an improvement with a glued-in neck and aren't concerned about degree of difficulty in resetting their necks in the future.  A "dovetail joint" is not technically synonymous with a "glued-in" neck.  So do you mean specifically a dovetail joint, whether glued or bolted-on, sounds superior to any other kind of joint?  Or that any style joint, dovetail or not, will sound superior if it's glued in place instead of bolted?

Good question.  Superior sound (one would hope)?  Traditional methods are a selling feature for typically conservative potential buyers?  Factory tooling, machinery, programming, and training is already set up to do it a certain way that has worked great for decades?

Remember also, that with almost any method of attachment, the fingerboard is glued to the top and has to be removed cleanly as well.

Yes, that was my point;  especially with some glues.  Then once you get it off you have to remove all traces of glue on both the neck tenon and the mortise in the neck block.  Once the neck is off, the adjustment is done the same way regardless of how the neck was attached.  You shave or you shim in all the right places then either glue it back on or screw it back on.

And if it's a nice Guild they went and finished it after the Dovetail neck was glued, so you have to carefully cut through the finish before you can even steam it.  :crying:

This has become quite the interesting thread, and I am enjoying the recent turn toward discussion of neck joining.  I own joins of nearly every type out there and believe any of them can be made to sound very good.  I was very surprised to learn that Dana Bourgeois also uses a bolt on neck design for his acoustic guitars.  They not only bolt the neck join, but also bolt on the fretboard extension.  The bolt on neck looks just like a dovetail join from the outside and, coupled with the Bourgeois top voicing techniques and an Aged Tone top, it would be difficult to distinguish it from any dovetail join in terms of tonal quality and harmonic content.  All in all they are pretty remarkable guitars IMHO...

Maybe this bolt-on neck business has got something to do with the stigma of decades-old memories of guitars like this.

(https://cdn6.bigcommerce.com/s-n9l2n2/products/5041/images/35490/Vintage_Framus_Texan_12-String_Acoustic_Guitar_Black_Rose_Sunburst-010__29769.1486750884.1280.1280.jpg?c=2)

I had a guitar like this and I took it apart to fathom the mysteries of the guitar. And this took some of the magic out of it.

I came to associate solid woods, glued-in necks, and things that took a craftsman (crafts person) to adjust as as the marques of lasting quality.  A guitar that a kid with a screwdriver could disassemble couldn't compete.

I don't doubt that most folks can't tell the difference between the tone of a dovetail glued in neck and a bolted neck of any type joint. I was just making the point that there are plenty of traditionally minded customers (some of whom are sure they CAN tell the difference) who want guitars with a dovetail neck joint, therefore there's a market for them that both large companies and small builders are accommodating.

My experience too George.

Most of my guitars I would categorize in the "1 in 100" range for the make/model, how well it plays and how great it sounds.  And yes, I had to buy and sell a lot of them to accomplish that.  I have tried to discriminate tonal nuances ever since the early '70's when I was first exposed to true audiophile quality recording and reproduction.  Early on I believe I believed way too much of what I read about guitar construction techniques and why each one was supposedly so much better than the others...  In my actual experience, I have found that a truly great quality guitar with outstanding build quality, playability and tonal characteristics can be found in every single one of them, assuming you hunt only for the minimum of those that meet the "1 in 100" category.  I would rate my Bourgeois as "1 in 10,000" and they haven't even made that overall quantity of them yet (~8k).  I also put some of my Larrivee's, Northwood's and Morgan's in that narrow category as well...  In the end, it is most likely about what satisfies the individual listener's ear the most that really counts isn't it?

Stonebridge/Furch G23CR-C  Cedar top and Rosewood back and sides. Totally different voice than my Larrivée OM-40R and wider nut at 45 mm but I LOVE it for finger style!
