Title: L-03bw: What's It Worth?
Post by: Steve Daugherty on May 24, 2005, 01:51:52 PM
I have a small acoustic music store. I don't do internet sales. I called Larrivee, and they told me about this forum. I traded for a L-03BW, which is an "Australian Blackwood, similiar to Koa." I'm told that 200 were made. It's inthe larivee case. it has a small hole in the guitar, where the button was placed.
What's the value. Thanks. Steve Daugherty @ Mountain Music, 423-875-5250.

steve,

If you go to the search function (above right) and enter the key words blackwood and 03 and select the button "any date" you will see what they went for here on the forum. there are 3 or 4 entries for this model guitar.

Once you settle on a price, or if you want to entertain offers, you should post a picture, provide a better description, and give forum members a go at it.

doesn't seem to be any buyers here recently. i had mine listed for about two months.

i bought it for $755 on ebay. resold it on ebay for a little less. it seems to be slightly on the high side for what people want to pay, although several months ago they went for 800.

The number of dwarves and maybe a bit less seems to be a reasonable price for a used L03BW.  Less if you want a quick sale I guess.

Steve, since you asked a direct question I'm going to give you a direct answer
you should expect to fetch between six to seven hundred dollars for this guitar.
You did mention a "hole" I can  only assume that someone placed a strap button possibly on the heel of the neck? If so you probably should repair that with a new heelcap......Blackwood was a big thing around here not too long ago, there still seems to be a bit going on about it, not that you would know (being new and all) these guitars do rock and they were in short supply which did inflate their selling price for a time, all said Larrivee has bulit more than one or two limited run models that do hold their own in the used market, right now  maybe blackwood isn't so hot, more importantly they are just damn fine instuments!!!  hope this helps.

Again, thanks to all for input. The hole is not in the heel, but in the body of the guitar, about 2" from the heel. My explanation is that the former owner had poor judgement, probably coupled with alcohol. He driled a small hole for the strap button.
This guitar has amazing tone. I suspect that a collector will buy it sometime soon. Was this wood aged before the guitars were built?
    Thanks!!!!!

PS: I priced it, with the larrivee case, at $795.00.

On the theory that stores usually charge a little more than an individual, that's probably not out of line. You will probably have to be patient and wait for the right buyer. It also gives you a little wiggle room.

You might post pictures here and at the acoustic guitar forum. The -03 models are great little guitars and the blackwoods are something special indeed. What is the width of the nut? If the binding is the maple binding, how flamey is it? How figured is the blackwood?

That will effect the resale value of any guitar, very sad... :(

Where is it, on the side or back?

Steve,

Here is a previous thread about numbers of blackwood guitars. You may find it interesting.

Hello,

I stumbled on this old post and wanted to ask the same question  20 years later. I own this same guitar that I purchased  in the early 2000's. The model is L-03BW. It is in mint condition and I have an LR baggs Piezo pickup installed at the guitar shop. I picked it out of 20 different Larrivee guitars. This was the 7th or 8th guitar that the store owner played for me. When I heard it, that was the end of my search. I am not much of a player, so this guitar has verry little use and has been sitting in the case for the past 20 or so years. So, I'd like to sell it now to pay some medical bills. What do you think it is worth  today?

Right now is a tough time to sell an acoustic as the used market is saturated (for a couple reasons). I don't feel comfotable giving a price as I've seen 03-level Larrivees sell for anywhere from $1,000 to $1,700 used, and yet there's some listed for $1,000 that aren't selling. It's a weird market.

Condition, condition, condition.

Was it kept properly humidified or dehumidified over the 20 years. Cracks, scuff marks etc. will play a role in the amount you can get for it.

Keep checking Reverb.com and Ebay for used prices, that'll put you in the ballpark.

It is worth what someone is prepared to pay you for it.  Not subtle but reality.  I have no idea and I'm not going to do the research for you on the internet.  Sorry to sound harsh.

There are several used L 03's on Reverb. If that is your Blackwood it is the highest one. I don't know much about Blackwood but I believe due to recent used guitar prices you are too high. You might get some other opinions here... good luck with your sale.

I've seen a couple L03 BW listed lately on Reverb and FB Marketplace. One might be yours? 1800 and 1600, but neither have sold, if that's any indication. Recently, I have seen an excellent L03 go for as little as 800, and not everyone will put a premium on either the BW or the limited run (we know many of Larrivee's special tonewood runs are limited).

grantzol (like the rest of us) very likely knows this old cliché, too.
He didn't ask you do to the research for him.
Your post comes across as more sarcastic than harsh, responding to a new member of the forum and his first post here without adding anything of value to the thread. (To my mind, anyway.)
