Hey, I have been listening to John Martyn's "SpencerThe Rover" on a compilation CD. Is anyone familiar with his work? If so, can you suggest a good CD or two of his?
Thanks,
Fred
Hi Fred - IMO Solid Air is a must. All others are optional.
i agree with Duck, with the exception of the "Bless the Weather", which came right before Solid Air. both are very good. don't know much about his other stuff,,,i know some, particularly in the 80's is pretty dreadful. i hear he's sort of made a comeback though.
I have a few others. They're not exactly bad. One World and Grace and Danger are listenable. Sort of like Stevie Winwood's later stuff. They're high quality recordings but lack inspiration or something.
Saw him open for Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin in the early 70's at the Montreal forum, just him and his acoustic guitar and some pedals. I think most of the people there didn't know what to make of him at first, but after several songs we all stared to get into his music.
Cheers
Thanks everyone. I found him on a UNCUT Magazine CD. I am finding a lot of new stuff through these CD's and although the magazine is kind of pricey, it is a good read and the CD's are usually worth it. I've passed on a few issues that didn't jump out at me. However, the British really know how to put out an entertainment magazine. The last issue has a story about the excesses of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen. Man, and I thought the Rolling Stones and Led Zep went overboard in their touring days! Wow!
This is a great section of the forum, by the way.
Fred
Ok, I got "Bless The Weather" and it is pretty good. What album/CD is "Spencer The Rover" on?
Thanks,
Fred
John Martyn has just made what could be called a comeback album after having one of his legs amputated below the knee. In the uk the BBC have just broadcast a one hour documentary about him ,unfortunatly he still seems to like the old vino too much ,i can remember seeing him in early 80s and he was so drunk on stage he fell over !! and stayed there for a good 10mins. Still a fantastic player
