Title: Lesser known electric players
Post by: BlueBowman on November 04, 2026, 09:25:51 AM
Speaking of David Gilmour and Slash in the other thread got me thinking about lesser known electric players that I love. Players that don't get their due.

For me, that would be Robben Ford. Since discovering him, I count him as my favorite electric guitar player. I think the internet has helped bring his playing more into the light, but for my money, he should be even more popular. He played with Miles, George Harrison, and Joni Mitchell before going out on his own. Great guitar player. His Dumble tone is my favorite of all the "Dumble tones." His tone BREATHES. And his note selection is top notch almost always. Impressive considering a lot of it is improvised. I think he might've been more popular had he been a better singer. Not bad, but certainly not on par with his playing.

Not the fastest guitar in the west these days, this is fine improv and backing from him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAQQV7tZ7mQ

All his concerts from the mids 90s through the 2010s are on YT. Check 'em out.

Nice tone and playing here, and some well-crafted songs too (really leaning into the diminished thing on his solos, a nice fusion of blues and jazz): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zyys2W4QoEI (The bass player is Travis Carlton, Larry's son, and the drummer is Toss Panos, Sting's drummer: a tight trio.)
