Title: How often do you go to enjoy live music?
Post by: Silence Dogood on August 16, 2026, 11:28:50 AM
I don't go to many big rock concerts anymore.  The last stadium show I saw was the ELO farewell tour a couple years back at American Airlines Center in Dallas (it was great).

Now and then an outdoor festival in my area will have a band I want to see, but not often.

There are lots of big churches in the area that host local classical music societies and artists/groups that come come through town.  My family and I have seen some wonderful shows, and most of them are free to attend (they pass the plate and the decent thing to do is pitch in).

There's a lot of live music to get out and enjoy in any big city.  You just have to dig around a bit online to find it. After a while you'll end up on mailing lists and things that keep you in the loop.  I guess we get out to a handful of these things each year.  It always makes for a fun night out that doesn't break the bank. I think it's important to take kids out and expose them to different kinds of art and music.  Sometimes one of mine will think something is going to be lame but ends up having a great time and learning something new.

Jeff Lynne is a brilliant musician, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist.  :thumbsup

I quit going to big rock concerts decades ago. If I have to watch a jumbotron or look through binoculars to see the show I won't be there.
The good news is that most of the music and musicians I enjoy best will play small venues.

Actor Jeff Daniels just opened a new venue last week in the little town of Chelsea Michigan  where he lives (and close to home for me) and as luck would have it, he booked an artist I have been wanting to see for a long time, in mid-September so I grabbed 4 tickets the first day they went on sale.
It's a much more intimate experience. Similar to being right there in the living room with them.

The ELO show was one for the memories for sure, especially since Jeff is one of my favorite musicians of all time.  So many great songs.  It was kind of bittersweet though: he was helped on to the stage and seemed very feeble.  I don't think his guitar was even plugged in, and he had another fellow handling all the really high parts on vox.  But it was just cool to be in the same room as him.

I hear you on the big screens, etc.  It makes no sense to pay to watch a big TV when you can do that at home.

I have seen Tommy several times.  I never got bored but I will say he puts on pretty much the exact same show every time.

Since I retired, one of my favorite pastimes is to see live musical acts in smaller venues. I have yet to see a bad show.

Queequeg,
A visit to Chelsea, MI to visit Jeff Daniels' new venue is on my bucket list. I'd also like to see him and his son, Ben Daniels perform. The two of them have an extensive instrument collection too.

The large stadium venues aren't something that interest me either, but music festivals are something we do enjoy. We travelled to Kentucky recently for the ROMP Bluegrass Festival, which was great despite the nasty weather that ended it early. Closer to home, we'll be attending the Wheatland Music Festival in early September, followed shortly by the Michigan Irish Music Festival. Both are uniquely different in many ways, and I wouldn't want to miss either one.

^^^  Has anyone here been to one of the Candlelight concerts?  I'm going to see one next month -- music from the Lord of the Rings films.  Really looking forward to it.

Yes, a couple of different ones. Both in very nice venues; one was an old church.
Hundreds of those battery operated pillar candles.
I've noticed a few others emulating or imitating this candlelit effect.
I like it.

I'm going to see Mike Dawes in October, super excited! He's like Tommy Emmanuel with electronic special effects. Small venue and Seats up close. I'll be sure to write up tabs to all his songs and post them here. (Yeah, right!)

I took my daughter to the Candlelight show the other night. It was great!  The venue was one of the oldest churches in downtown Dallas -- a beautiful setting.  The music featured was from the Lord of the Rings films played by a wonderful string quartet.  Such talented people!

On the way home we were behind the President's motorcade as he left Dallas.  All in all, a very different night than I usually experience!

I have some cool pics from the night but I've given up on trying to attach them to threads here as it never works.

I'd enjoy seeing them. Sounds like a great night out, SD.

Saw two live act shows over the weekend. One was a trio called House of Hammill, they play Irish and Celtic type folk music.

Other band was a surf music band called Los Straitjackets. Extremely fun band, and the 4 members all wear Mexican wrestling masks! Check out this fun song:
