Hi Folks, can someone help with my new 00-40R, in making a Truss Rod Adjustment. Have "D" string buzz when I capo (at #3), and on several more strings when I tune-down a step. I got out the Adjusting Rod (different/simpler than the one's I've seen from online vids), and it just doesn't seem to seat properly? It's as if I'm using too small of driver head.... Was expecting a solid seat snap, and a "click" for each 1/4 turn or so... Not feeling like I'm doing anything, maybe it IS seated, and there's just no tension on the mechanical hardware yet? Loosy-Goosy. Appreciate any advice/experience.
This is about my 3rd posting, wish to make things right by you all, because now I understand, and now confirming, :donut :donut2
Sometimes, there's no tension. That's ok. Don't expect clicks. You'll sometimes hear the woods moving but it's not always the case.
I'm going to be very careful if there's no tension. Some rods can run into issues if you just keep turning. I might go a bit aggressive (1/4 turn, wait 5 min, check, repeat if needed) until I get some movement. Otherwise, you could end up being there all day if you do the usual 1/8 turn and wait an hour. Do this at your own risk though as I'm not giving tech advice on how much to turn the rod, just my own experience.
Do make sure you're checking for movement and not just waiting to feel resistance as going in the direction the wood wants to move in won't feel resistive. Especially when the wood wants to take a few hours to flex back. If you find that you're at the end of the workable adjustment and aren't getting any "relief" (see what I did there) it's time to see how much relief you're working with and evaluate if there's another geometry issue like a high fret, different saddle needed, etc.
Thanks Bowie for response. Got it, no clicks (detects). It still just feels like no engagement is being made. Do realize understanding and caution is needed in making adjustments on the Truss Rod, to avoid damage. Have stopped with my attempt. Will reach out to online Distributor who sent me the Guitar, I need to talk to a Tech that has adjusted latter model Larrivees. Have about 2.5 weeks left on the Return Grace Period, so I need to keep on it to resolve.
Question for you, FollowURmusic-
When you place a straight edge along the fingerboard how much, if any, relief are you seeing now?
Hi Queequeg, Thank you. It's completely Flat! Up early here this morning, waiting for a call back(s) with my patience hat on to figure this out. Fairly competent with things mechanical, just don't want to experiment with something that's not mine yet (still in grace return period), is a substantial outlay of money, and something I have minimal experience with. Now is a perfect time to learn something and gain some experience. Hoping the builder makes contact, that intimately knows what the situation is. From your question, I'm starting to think it was set up Flat/"neutral"/No Relief... pre-engagement position, which is why I'm getting no feel from the tool...and has yet to start doing what it was intended to do.
Yeah, zero relief can certainly result in some string buzz.
Also might explain why you're getting no resistance when you turn the wrench.
But you're wise to be cautious, always with a truss rod adjustment, and especially when it's brand new, under warranty and you still have the option of returning.
Yea, that does makes sense. Just heard from back from "the Man", which I appreciate greatly, He added that he makes adjustments with the strings off, and to apply pressure to the Dual Action Rod; as I turn. May have to go that way, to get complete clearance in moving the tool along with the needed pressure. With the Dual Action also, I can expect it to make "stops" along the way, as it's a part of its functionality. Something to move forward on now, thanks.
