Title: NGD- DV-10 KK

Hi All. First time posting in the forum although I've been consuming threads over the past few months ever since acquiring my first Larrivee- a '00 L-05. This guitar blew me away in just about every sense. The aesthetics, the playbilty, the tone. I was gobsmacked and couldn't figure out why these guitars weren't mentioned in the same breath as Martin and Gibson. I also own a high-end Martin and I'll say that this DV is every bit as good and maybe a little better and I often find myself reaching for this instead of the J-40.

But I digress and I'm sure I'm not telling y'all anything you don't already know.

Since buying the L-05, I've acquired 3 other Larrivees. This guitar was supposedly made for the 1999 NAMM along with 5 others.  I haven't been able to find much info on it aside from someone trying to sell one a few years back. The quality of the build is absolutely stellar. Fit and finish is world-class. This guitar did have some neck dive but I've improved that with an intensive rehydration over the past two weeks. The guitar presently plays like butter with the action sitting just below 6/64 on the Low E. Tone is superb- warm and resonant with a nice punchy base presence that doesn't overwhelm and muddy things up. And this has to be some of the nicest Koa I've ever seen. For you consideration: my DV-10 KK.

Cheers,

Common_good

Welcome to the Larrivee Forum, Common_Good.
That's an uncommonly good looking guitar right there. Thanks for the pics.
Koa is such a beautiful wood. We need look no further than your own DV-10 KK.  :nice guitar:

Welcome!  That is a great looking guitar!

A few years ago John Larrivee answered a question in a thread about another beautiful Koa guitar from the same period.

"We harvested a log in Hawaii around late 98/early 99 that yielded hundreds, if not a thousand, sets of the most incredible KOA to date. No argument. Jean still talks of the folklore today. You will never see anything of this quality in large numbers ever again. The 2000 NAMM show we took over 300 guitars that were all Koa.  We even made the booth out of Koa. Parts of that booth we still use today. Other parts were cut down in the early 2010's to make bindings for body and fingerboard custom run guitars. We still have pieces. We repeated the 2000 NAMM show in 2001 and this time brought the all Koa Ukuleles. It was a fun time for instrument making. Nothing too crazy in the world had happened yet."

Thx for sharing, jrdavies! The ongoing quest for tonewoods is a cool part of guitar making that's often overlooked. Hearing Jean and his son talk about their adventures around the world sourcing materials really breaths life into these instruments. :beer

This one would've hurt the pocket book badly but I was able to trade for it without paying too dearly!  :nana_guitar
