Appears to be a penchant for TP quotes so I'll throw this log on that fire insofar as it seems to be apropos at this particular juncture.
"There's something good waiting down this road. I'm picking up whatever's mine."

This will be a fun thread to follow.

For those of you who ordered a Forum VII, here's a suggestion to help you pass the time: Play one of your other guitars every day and enjoy the experience of waiting for your new guitar. One of the best parts of the waiting game is the anticipation when your Forum VII guitar finally arrives at your front door and watching it acclimate to the room while you wait to open the box. Once you hold the guitar and tune it up, you're now ready to lose yourself for the rest of the day, week, month and/or year.

Very true! But do you really suggest waiting to open the box so the guitar can acclimate to the room?? As my friend Tom Petty would say, "don't do me like that!"  :roll

All I need is a picture of a piece of wood. Just a little bump to "take the edge off".

I've noticed an up-tick in Tom Petty quotes around here lately. If you Won't Back Down then, Oh Well, You can Still Change Your Mind. You Don't Know How It Feels to constantly have Tom Petty songs stuck in your head, and I Hope You Never find out.

Side note, it appears that there are so many Tom Petty songs that it may be possible to communicate by only naming Tom Petty song titles.  :roll

This is sort of related to the wait for news on our Forum VII's. Since committing to this build, I've been debating selling a guitar or two just to keep a lid on the herd, if you will. It turns out that the universe did it for me. About 8-9 years ago, a new neighbor sold me her case queen Martin 000-16, a beautiful 1994 build. She and her husband moved again shortly afterward. Her husband sadly passed away from cancer a year ago and she's been trying to use music as a way of dealing with her loss. She even bought a mandolin and spent time trying to learn to play, but she always missed that Martin. She called yesterday asking if I'd consider selling it back to her. It was a very easy decision, and she's picking it up this afternoon. She also agreed that she'd sell it back to me if or when the time came.

My crazy mind goes to fearing the worst. I imagine that the sinker redwood sound boards are too brittle and they are having trouble working with the wood... Nonsense, of course. But I have heard that the artificial wood aging using torrification causes spruce to be very brittle and hard to work with.
Title: Re: Forum VII waiting room
Post by: teh on July 21, 2025, 03:45:26 PM
Rest easy Stringpicker. You're going to get an awesome guitar.

When Matthew showed me those two pallets of cut rosewood beside the building last June with the Santa Ana winds blowing through them to dry them, it was clear they know what they're doing.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the Larrivees are fans of torrefication either.

I know!
And the strings unravel as the sound hole just closes up while the bridge pins swell, exploding the bridge.
Then the saddle rides off into the sunset.

I was thinking of you guys yesterday when playing my sinker rw 00. I hadn't picked it up in a few months as I was waiting for my hands to heal up and I the sound really struck me. The bass is so dry and woody while the highs shimmer and linger. Reminds me how spruce guitars were sort of a crutch for my playing because that boomy bass can hide everything. With redwood, the note separation is so clear and you become really mindful of technique. I love that, but it caught me off guard a bit as it's like your playing is suddenly in HD.  :bgrin:

Regarding torrefication, it's interesting to see how the hype kinda died down in the acoustic world but now a lot of electric builders are using it to get more stable necks. The "pre-aged tone" thing doesn't seem to have connected with acoustic players.

Oh, one other thing, I don't think sinker redwood is brittle (it actually flexes a lot and you'll see that around the bridge) but it is stiff enough that the highs shimmer like crazy. It's a really fun thing if you like ambience and letting arpeggios ring out.

Hello Everyone,
We are excited to begin sharing images of the F-VII build! Please keep in mind that the lighting conditions may not always be perfect in the factory. As a result, colors might appear different due to excessive natural sunlight, yellow tint, or overly bright fluorescent light, which can create a greenish hue. I will do my best to correct these issues.
I will maintain a file with all the images I post and will include a flash drive with your guitar, so there's no need for you to save all the photos I share.

Enjoy the process!
- jr.

Top wood personally not for me and a few others I chatted to (after agonising decision and wanting a Larrivee OO for ages) - felt needed more discussion tbh (though cool a new top was chosen for tone difference). Surprised has gone ahead with so few orders (and not all same spec re 03 vs 01) but kudos to Larrivee for sticking to it. Will wait and see what the 60th is and trust you enjoy your new guitars! 8)

The stripes on the redwood look so much like the flamed maple cap of a Les Paul. I think I read somewhere that Matt had chosen that wood for that effect on an RS electric build.

I was actually impressed that it was 7, given the state of the acoustic guitar market at the moment. Mike's variation sort of makes it 8, though it's not an official Forum guitar.

This is actually the most interested I've ever been in a Larrivee guitar. The timing just collided with some personal circumstances that prevented it. I do think that the people who ordered are going to get some of the best sounding Larrivees ever made.

Those photos are great. What sets Larrivee apart is the fact that they are a boutique builder for players of modest means as well as those with deeper pockets. Check out Wendy's inlay work that is off the charts amazing for those who want to incorporate unique artwork into their guitar.

According to the link outlining the history of Forum Guitars that Queequeg posted, in 2005 Larrivee only built 9 Forum II guitars with one body shape and two top options. The Forum VII offered two bodies (00 and 000) and three options for back/side wood and some nice added features. For those who want something different, Larrivee will work with you. I've upgraded  all of my Larrivees to include nicer bridge pins, bone nut/saddle combos and archtop cases.

I think some things have been said, with good intention, that came across the wrong way. I know I've done this myself where I talked myself out of something and shared those thoughts, not realizing how they read to someone who did want or own that item.

IMO, the FVII doesn't need any justification. I don't think anyone figured it out on paper. They took a chance on something unique or they didn't. All that's left is for 7 (8) people to wait for that exciting moment where they take that first strum and find what new sonic landscape they've entered.

Maybe that's where I saw it. I usually filter for leftys only but didn't that day because I was looking for something for my mom.

Beginning to wonder if I should start looking for previous Forums that come up for sale and have the whole sequence.   Please, don't encourage me!    :whistling:

It still amazes me that Larrivée is so willing to build *custom* guitars for it's forum members.
And these are not run of the mill guitars. I for one, am very thankful.

How many other builders do that?

Well-said. Not only custom, but exotic wood customs at a bargain price. This doesn't strike me as something they are doing because it makes financial sense. There's definitely a sense of appreciation being sent back to the fans. I hope the Larrivee family knows, "we notice".  :thumbsup

They can customize anything pretty easily. It's a pretty small, nimble, family run company.. At the end of the day you're putting food on their table.

I know I used to think it was this big factory production. I was lucky enough to get a tour last year. I was blown away with what they do with like 15 people on staff. Other than the CNC milling, everything else is a hand process.

I took some pictures as well.. should have taken more.

I was supremely impressed that Matt was able to reorganize the workflow through the building in their newer Oxnard facility. They also have a climate controlled building within a building, constructing all of the acoustics at a specific humidity.. not many manufacturers have so much control over humidity in their facilities.

Surprises are the best. I don't know about everyone else, but if I have a trip or event planned, when that day comes my hype has died down. But, if I'm looking forward to something and then, BAM, there it is, it hits me while my excitement is still high.

Keep the faith, fellow forum buyers! I'm sure that there were important business and family obligations this week, and there may not have been enough time to get new pictures up. Just remember: the fact that there are new pictures coming means that progress is being made, and those sweet guitars will be in our hands soon enough! - and we will still have to wait 24 hours for the boxes to get up to room temperature once they arrive...

Oh boy!  Oh boy!  Oh boy!  They look fantastic - all three sides.

Have to ask.  While it is likely just the lighting for the photos, they look like they are gloss.  And maybe it's just the stage of finishing that they are in.  But I thought they would be satin finish?  Also, it looks like there are 'holes' in the fretboard for markers?  [little do I know about building a guitar]

Many thanks for posting the photos.  [Although now I'm even more anxious to have mine here.]

The finish is same as the F-VI at this point. They will end up satin.
The holes are tooling holes at 3rd and 14th frets. They are normally filled with fret markers, but you will be able to see them on finished F-VI and F-VII necks if you look really close.

There are seven fortunate Forum VII owners who have an amazing guitar heading their way. Your patience and perseverance will be rewarded when your new guitar shows up at your front door. Here are a couple of suggestions to help make this experience last a lifetime:

1) Remember to resist your natural temptation to open the box until it has had time to acclimate to its permanent home.

2) Play your guitar for a few weeks to let it settle in to its new environment before changing strings or tweaking the set-up.

3) Take a moment to appreciate just how well your Forum VII guitar fits in it's case once you open the box. This small detail is often overlooked but is an essential added benefit to your guitar's protection.

4) For first time satin finish owners, you will discover that Larrivee's Satin Finish is one of the best finishes available today. The satin finish will also highlight the quality of wood grain on the top, back and sides of your guitar.

Once the Forum VII guitars are finished, I'm confident the final results will be awesome including the necks and fretboards. I really like the photos I've seen so far. FWIW, I have two Martins, one with a black ebony fretboard and the other with a striped ebony fretboard and I love the look of both. One of the nicest features on any of my Larrivee guitars is the radial wood rosette on my Larrivee 00-24. I don't know who came up with that design, but I love it. I think the tops on the FORUM VII will be another winner.

So, as an attempt to initiate some friendly dialogue as we wait for our Forum VII guitars, I'm going to wonder out loud about the mysterious "opening up" period we might expect from these flamed sinker redwood tops. I know that it's a subject that can lend itself to lots of different opinions. I've not yet read or heard anything involving sinker redwood. I have one of the Forum VI guitars and am convinced that it started to sonically blossom about 12 months after I got it. And I play it a lot. It's become my main player with fingers and pick. So as we wait, does anyone have any experience or insight into what we might experience as relates to our redwood tops?
Title: Re: Forum VII waiting room
Post by: B0WIE on December 11, 2025, 06:10:44 AM
My personal take on break-in has changed over the years and I feel that conventional wisdom misses what's actually going on. When woods are clamped together, there is tension and resistance. As time passes, they ease into this new shape and the tension is much lower. This would explain the way new guitars sound "stiff", and why older ones seem to vibrate more freely. Explanations I've seen about water molecules, resins, etc never made sense and never explained why old, seasoned woods also change in sound after they've been a guitar for a while. It does help explain why a soft wood like cedar supposedly doesn't need break in time and why stiffer woods like adi spruce and koa take around 7 years (which is something I've seen repeated a lot).

So, I speculate your sinker redwood guitar will benefit from play as the vibrations help it settle into it's new shape. But, there will be no natural aging of the top wood, hardening of resins, etc. That's just a personal observation as someone who is fascinated by the "break in" phenomena, to the extent of performing numerous experiments. Would love to hear what others think.

I agree with what you say. As a lifelong woodworker, I've got some strong beliefs about wood, it's character, it's cooperation with other woods and materials, and it's very soul, if you will. When joining all the parts together it creates a new identity for each piece as it becomes something unique and wholly new. And that takes time, and in the case of a guitar, vibration, temperature, humidity, and time. I do think they "open up", but I believe it's more along the lines you described.

This is also what I think happens with the "opening up" process. Over time, string tension is pulling the top, sides, and back into an S-curve. Once the woods "give in" to that tension and take shape, you have a "fully relaxed" guitar heading into its best sounding days.

So, ultimately, it's the string tension acting upon the woods that causes guitars to "open up." As Bowie says above, harder woods will take a bit longer to "open" compared to soft woods, and that tracks with the string tension hypothesis.

Interesting thought that the sinker redwood will not mature like a brand new Sitka top. I'm very much in the dark how my 000 with hog b/s will sound, but I have no doubt that I will be pleasantly surprised and very, VERY happy.
Title: Re: Forum VII waiting room
Post by: William2 on December 11, 2025, 11:39:58 AM
I wonder if this opening up is even measurable. I'd think you would have to have an original recording and compare it to the present time. For me, the Larrivee's are the only instruments I've kept long enough to think about this. When I got them, they all had a component I require namely a long sustain. But I had heard the instruments before I purchased them. My D-40R is 4 years old and I think it sounds better but I can't actually say that because it sounded great when I got it. I'd like to get an all-hog instrument but if I have to wait 7 years for it to open up, I might not be around to hear it.

The thing I like about Larrivee guitars is that I happy with their sound from the beginning. If they improve that's wonderful. But my satisfaction is immediate, and I'm a happy camper. I had no idea that koa takes that long to mature!

Help me remember; was the redwood gracing our Forum VII guitars  reclaimed from the river in the 1990's? When was it acquired by the Larrivees? I can't recall much of the backstory for this redwood or how many details were shared in the lead up thread. I just remember that I was in California hiking the redwood forests when the thread turned in this direction and I was immediately and irreversibly all in.

I know Alan Carruth has measured his handbuilt guitars once strung up, and then he tracks the audible changes over time. He says they drop in pitch (the main top resonant frequency) the first week or two quickly, and then over time usually play down in frequency even more, but not as much as that first week. I would trust Alan to take accurate measurements. Changing (in this case, lowering) that main top RF will definitely alter the sound of the guitar. A little more responsive, a little warmer, etc. I think this is what we players are hearing when guitars "open up." Again, I think it's the wood relaxing from the prolonged string tension.

It's hard for me to make quotes on my phone but I'll touch on a few of the posts.

Redwood is non resinous and when wood has been in a river bed for many decades, there is an exchange of materials. In my sinker redwood guitar, you can see swirls and sparkles from where minerals from the river bed have attached to the wood. Normal Redwood doesn't have that. I say all that to say, I don't think there's any maturing left to be done. Not on in terms of aging, drying, or hardening.

Break in can definitely be measured. I've done so with recordings and a tonerite over weeks. But, the potential for break in varies with each guitar. Some will change quickly and many not at all. I think, all brand new guitars are going to change, for the reasons I mentioned earlier. The failure of the tonerite happens when someone treats it like it's an elixir that will just make things better. It's not like you can make the woods relax if they are already relaxed. Sometimes, that's all you get and the rest comes with decades of flexing and deformation.

I don't think the source for the Redwood was stated but the vast majority was pulled in the 90's. There's some coastal and other sinker redwoods but they're uncommon.

I had some down time today while we're on vacation so I dug back into the original thread. I was able to log in on my laptop, something I haven't been able to do for months, and that helped immensely not having to use my phone to navigate. But I found where the redwood source was described as "secret". I'll admit to being super excited about these guitars, that being a massive understatement. I can imagine myself staring at the top, examining the subtleties of the gorgeous flamed redwood. In between playing sessions, that is. I've reread much of the original thread, relistened to several YouTube videos of similar guitars, and just basically enjoyed being part of this process, and being part of the Larrivee family of owners. My appreciation for them only grows.

The wood most likely came from Mr Ciancutti's operation at some point. He was the pioneer and ran it up until it was no longer viable. However, there are groups and individuals who bought large amounts and distribute it independently. Anything from commercial companies to instrument builders. If someone wants to know the story of their redwood top, Arky Ciancutti's salvage operation is a good place to look.

Happy New Year, everyone! I wanted to share a quick update on the progress of the VII builds. Late November/December was a whirlwind as we worked hard to fulfill holiday orders for our dealers and customers, and we made significant strides with the Baker-T electronics. Acoustic builds will resume the week of the 12th. The mahogany VII models continue to lead the way, while the walnut models and Mike's build are moving along a bit more slowly due to various production factors. Rest assured, all projects are progressing and will catch up soon. I'll be back at the factory in California on the 19th, and I'll provide another update and a batch of photos then. In the meantime, enjoy these beauties. Wishing you all the best, - JR & Family

A fitting word to describe the Forum VII would be "Showstopper" and I even like the cartoon print of the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote hanging on the wall over the work bench. Nice touch. The satin finish will really highlight the wood grain and details of your guitar. If any of you ordered a 00, prepare to have your doors blown off. Last, am I correct in my recollection that the Forum VII guitars include an archtop case? Three of my Larrivees have an archtop case and each of them really do fit like a glove.

Speaking from experience for those of you who are waiting for your guitar, the anticipation is one of the best parts. My Forum VI was one of the last two finished and it shipped in February 2022 and exceeded my expectations in every way. Not only does Larrivee know how to build guitars, they've learned a thing or three about how to package and ship them too. Most of you will probably even want to save the shipping box too after you open it. I've had two Larrivees shipped in February, one in July and one in late September. Waiting that extra day for the box to acclimate to room temperature is well worth the effort.

We'll be at the ROMP music festival in Kentucky in June, though I usually don't travel with my better guitars. I might be persuaded for a fellow forum member.  :cheers

Thanks John for the update and wonderful photos.
Well, I like the handle, but there is lurking in the shadows an unofficial 8th, of sorts, as our Forum build captain Mike has his own Redwood build coming that more closely resembles the original spec for the Forum VII. While not a Forum guitar, it's going to be a very special guitar.

I've never been to the ROMP festival, but I see it's in Owensboro. My sister and brother-in-law used to live there. The last time I visited them, that terrible ice storm had just come through (maybe fifteen years ago, or so). That was a crazy experience.

We were invited to attend ROMP with some wonderful new friends we met camping at a different music festival a couple years ago. When I checked out the lineup, it was an easy decision. Music sure can be a great common denominator for making new friends.

OK, I am confused (not unusual).

I've noticed a discrepancy in the recent updates.

The initial run was comprised of five mahogany models (numbered 1-5) and two walnut models (numbered 6-7).

The latest photo group only shows four mahogany guitars, with number 3 conspicuously absent.

John's update on the future timeline mentioned only the two walnut guitars and "Mike's guitar".

The Theory:

Could Mahogany Guitar #3 actually be Mike's guitar?

If so, this would confirm it as a Forum 7 model (despite the slightly different configuration Mike requested), and account for the missing #3 in the photos while also explaining why John mentioned it separately from the main group.

The wait time is certainly breeding some interesting speculation! Thoughts?

No discrepancy... #3 went quiet somewhere in the neck fit or C&C stage.
Rarely, a flaw in the neck reveals itself during C&C, this is after a LOT of work has been done on the neck, and after it has been prefit to the body. A new neck must be made for that body, resulting in a big delay. Something like that happened to Tom's F-VI, and his guitar shipped nearly 2 months late.

Or maybe some small tear out problems during routing for binding, with no structural damage, but requiring a minor repair.
Anyhow, mine is a plain 000-01, except for the redwood top. I don't know what the serial number is, except to guess it might be #8.

Thanks for remembering Mike, your guitar will be a great addition to your stable.

One of the challenges I faced was reading about others getting their Forum guitar delivered while watching and waiting for mine to be finished. I never shared this but my guitar was actually shipped while I was in Florida so I had to wait another three weeks on top of the delay to play it. I had it delivered to my son's office and he opened the box at my request and played it for me until I got home. It was well worth the wait and I had my parlor to keep me company so it was not really a problem; just a minor inconvenience.

The silver lining in that cloud was having John Jr. tell me that they wouldn't ship my guitar until they were sure it was 100% right. That philosophy reinforced what I already knew about this company and I'm confident that the Forum VII buyers will feel the same way once they get their guitars.

Absolutely! When I hear that a company is delaying something for quality control concerns, its' a bit of a relief. Especially these days when the method is to get something out the door and move on. It says to me that Larrivee would rather spend more time and money to do right by one of their customers.

This picture of a new Huss & Dalton is linked to the Guitar Tex site. It is a OOO-SP with redwood top and sinker mahogany B&S. I talked to Mark and it arrived today. The price isn't nailed down but it will be well over eight grand...
So I think we are in great company here. Our guitars will look just as good and cost less than 1/3 the Huss.

Huss also has a redwood/claro walnut OM going to another dealer. Not as good looking.

Ever since meeting you at Guitar Tex's shop I've followed them and saw this guitar the other day. Couldn't agree more...we're in a great place with our orders, their quality and their price. If I hadn't ordered a Forum VII, that Moonwood/Koa Larrivee they put in my hands was probably going to come live here. That's one of the very nicest music stores I've had the pleasure to visit.

I got to play myopic Squirrel's 000-40 last year, and I immediately fell in love with the shape and comfort of the 12 feet 000. The sound was spectacular, also. That is one of the many reasons I  am so excited to get my forum VII.

Those guitars look great. For those who are waiting, remember to keep in mind that Jr. is covering a lot of ground traveling between Vancouver and Oxnard.  Someone can correct me but for most of my playing years, rosewood, mahogany and maple and to a lesser degree koa, were the preferred wood choices by builders for back and side. Sitka, Adirondack and Mahogany were the preferred top woods. I never actually played a guitar with a Moonwood Spruce top and Walnut Back and sides until I picked up my Forum VI for the first time. I can't wait to read about the reaction from the Forum VII gang once they get their guitars.

Yes. In fact, there's some good interviews with Richard Hoover where he talks about getting his start in the 70's and how there was not much of a market for anything but a dread with a spruce top and either rosewood or mahogany backs. He found koa to be excellent but had trouble selling koa backed guitars. And, OMs were thought of as a "girl's guitar" and people warned him no one would buy them. He describes his struggles to try to get the player base to accept other types of woods and body sizes. I admire guys like he and Jean who built designs they believed in and kept offering them.

Now, buyers are not only open to different top woods but they want specific varieties of spruce. It's pretty amazing how far it's come in recent years. I remember walking into GC stores not that long ago and the acoustics were all spruce over mahogany/rosewood dreads with the occasional Gibson jumbo.

You walnut VII folks are in for a treat. The biggest reason I didn't order mine with walnut is because my VI is walnut, though I may have still opted for it if they hadn't offered an upgraded mahogany grade to 05-09. Big walnut fan here.

This is exactly like the one I played at Guitar Tex's in San Antonio last March. I was so struck by this guitar that I was going to buy it after we got home. They also had it listed on Reverb, and when the Forum VII conversation turned to flamed sinker redwood, the uniqueness of our opportunity swayed me. But the 000 body was an easy choice.

I'm always a day late (or in this case, about 1.5 years 😅), but having two kids in 21 months will do that. I'd been waiting for the Forum VII, then took a break from guitar while juggling the kids. Just got back into it last week and realized I completely missed the VII order window.

Thanks everyone, I'm home and only looking at and listening to guitars instead of playing them for the moment.

Doing reasonably well, thanks to good care at the hospital and here at home.

Lucked out on Friday, by deciding to call 911 fast rather than "seeing if it would pass" and by my wife giving me aspirin even before the EMTs arrived. Without the aspirin, and a delay of even 30 min, and there would likely be a lefty FVII for John to sell. A lesson for all.

Appreciate all your good wishes. Looking forward to seeing and hearing your new instruments.

JC

I just rewatched a YouTube interview with Matt Larrivee at Alamo Music, and he said something like "when you order a custom guitar from us, it can take a long time, because you're waiting for either me, my brother, Jean or Wendy to finish their work on your guitar."

I thought that was really cool.

I'm anxiously awaiting word from the rest of the FVII gang that theirs are shipping, as well. When I looked a little closer to the FedEx email I received, it notes that shipping info was relayed to them last Friday afternoon at 1:38, and the guitar was picked up yesterday (Monday) afternoon at 3:18. For those of us getting mahogany 000's, we've not known which one's were destined to be ours. I found my serial number on the FedEx shipper. So now my mystery is, at least, partially revealed. The catch is mine is the only one that didn't get a picture posted with finish applied. So now the wondering is left to you three.
Edit: Wouldn't you know, about 5 seconds after posting I got an email from Larrivee with the serial number included in the invoice. All that sleuthing for naught!

FedEx let mine sit over the weekend at the factory, despite receiving the info early Friday afternoon, hence the Wednesday delivery notice. Now it's Friday, like most. Does there seems to be a rare and electrified anticipation in the air?

I've been trying but I think since the upgraded forum I haven't figured it out yet. I'm sure the incoming guitar will be photo worthy. One of the advantages of living in the southern part of the country is the guitar won't be subjected to the cooler climes of the north, John even mentioned this to me when he called for the final payment and telling me when he was hoping to ship.

When I received the e-mail from Larrivée telling me it was shipped, I immediately checked temps across the route it'll take.

I'll wait some checking temps but it won't have to be as long.

Below where you type your reply is a line the says "Click or drag files here to attach them." then you either "click" that line and find your file to attach OR drag a file (your pic of choice) to that line.

I've got my Forum VII !!!!!

Temps being in the 70's I waited a bit checking box temps (read 75.9) on box, then same inside.

It's absolutely beautiful!

On a side note, I didn't get an arch top case, or the flash drive of build pics.

Not to spam but, looking at the photos again, there's something really special and almost ancient/mystical about seeing those redwood tops with the satin finishes. As if it's some exhibit out of a museum taken home. And, knowing that they are salvaged gives the whole thing an ethical vibe too. Congrats again!

Mine is well down the road. I got the email from Larrivee yesterday.
FedEx says Tuesday, but the guitar was only 765 miles away at 4.03 AM this morning, in San Simon, AZ, which is almost at the Texas state line. If I got in my truck right now and met FedEx out on I-10 somewhere, I could be back here a helluva lot sooner than Tuesday.

The photo does not capture the beauty of this guitar. I need to take it to the shop Monday for a setup, I had a pickup installed and I think it needs adjustment because of that. I could get lost in the top -- it looks 3D. I also did not get the archtop case.

Congratulations to the Forum VII owners who have received their guitars already. Each of the ones I've seen in photos look like a keeper and I look forward to your comments after you've had a couple weeks to play them. After looking at those guitars, my suggestion would be to leave the pick guards off so you don't cover up that beautiful top wood.

Gorgeous guitar! And I second the suggestion of waiting a bit before having someone "tweak" it. Mine was quite satisfactorily set up out of the box. I'm working on trying to capture how beautiful it sounds amplified thru the LR Baggs Dual. I'm running thru a Baggs Venue DI and am just starting to try and dial it in.

To everyone suggesting I hold off on the setup: you were spot on. It actually seems to have settled a bit overnight already!

The craftsmanship on this Larrivée is impeccable; the Redwood and Khaya are truly top-shelf materials. The top is especially stunning—it looks like a living, breathing thing. When I play, the entire body vibrates, producing a warm, soft tone that's perfect for my fingerstyle pieces. I couldn't be happier with it.

I'm thrilled with this purchase. My sincere thanks to the Larrivée family for their artistry; they really are masters of the craft.

Just a bit of advice to those of you expecting your Forum VII guitar in the next few days. Grab one of your guitars right now and play. Play as much as you can until your fingertips start getting sore. Make sure your calluses are ready for a workout. You are going to want to...absolutely need to... play your new treasure as much as you can. You're also going to sit and stare at them in between your new-found obsession to play them until your fingers kindly remind you that they're made of meat and bone and have limits. I believe we have been given a truly wonderful gift from the Larrivee family.

I honestly  thought you'd get your guitar *before* I got mine, I guess *logic* doesn't apply when couriers are involved.

I believe Larrivee ships D'Addario XT 12-53.

The sound (to me) is different, in a good way. I have been primarily playing my Forum VI over the last while and the Forum VII is (to me) quite different.

Post by: J M Larrivée on February 23, 2026, 05:16:08 PM
Hi VII folks,
As you can see, the guitars were finished slightly ahead of schedule and are arriving now! Since I didn't have time to prepare the images on a flash drive and place them in the cases, I'll be sending the photos to everyone via WeTransfer instead. For anyone unfamiliar, WeTransfer makes it easy to send large files through email. You will simply receive a link in an email from Larrivée that you can download. I hope this will be even more convenient for everyone. Thanks for your understanding and enthusiasm! Also, thanks for all the kind words you have been sharing.

Also, regarding the flat-top cases, we've been running low on archtop cases while we switch suppliers. When we started the Forum VII project, there was no way to predict this supply challenge. The good news is that later this summer, we'll be receiving new case inventory from our overseas supplier. At that time, we'll gladly offer options to anyone who still wants an archtop case.

All the best - jr.

You can wait one more day! If it was warmer I'd oblige your request. Mine got here in a freakish February heat wave so I only waited about 6 hours when the case was 70°. We'll be issuing you a lie-detector test tomorrow to see if you waited!

It is same inside as outside on this beautiful day. So no waiting.
The headstock and fingerboard dots are the same as any normal paddle head.
Haven't done much more than pick a few notes, it is rich.
The body is 4-5/8 deep at the heel.
It will need a few tweaks, different strings, nut slots, saddle adjust, but for now I am just going to leave it be so it can get used to the house environment which just now is 72 and 35% humidity, inside and outside.
I like it a lot and am glad I got the -01. I will put a passive Baggs M1 in it tomorrow.

Here's what I personally do (not Larrivee approved, just me talking here) to speed things up. Even fragile instruments with nitro, varnish, and shellac finishes have done well with this. Don't do this if your room is very dry.
Take the case out of the box, lay it flat on the ground where no one is going to stumble over it. If you want to take it a step further, get the case off the cold floor by stacking some cardboard under each end.
Unlatch and open the case just enough to prop the edges open with guitar picks. Don't peek! You just want the smallest sliver of air transfer while the case warms.
After an couple hours, replace the picks with cardboard wedges.
After another hour or two, fold the cardboard.
I think you see where I'm going with this. Essentially, you're starting with a small bit of air transfer and increasing it as the guitar acclimates. Once you feel the guitar top is about the same temp as objects in the room, open the case and let the guitar sit for an hour or two, still in the case, so the back and sides acclimate via the sound hole.

Well, I opened her up!!  WOW.  Just a stunning work of art.  Top is stunning, and the 000 shape is just SOOOO comfortable.  I'm in heaven.  I love the JCL headstock, and it looks like the bound edges of the fretboard now have a slightly chamfered edge for comfort- no sharp 90 degree edge anymore.  I did get the arch top case, but the inside label isn't signed.  That's ok, I have photo proof that Larrivee hands were all over this guitar!

People have asked me over and over: "What kind of guitar is that?"  If it looked like this guitar of yours, I'm sure I'd have had many more conversations.

One other suggestion to Forum VII owners and Mike. The next time Larrivee announces a Pro Shop sale, take advantage of the discount and  order yourself a set of ebony or tortoise bridge pins with abalone dots. I put a set of the ebony pins on my 00-24 to complement the headstock inlay and a set of the tortoise pins on my FVI.

Yes, I got one with khaya back and sides. In fact, I just picked it up from the shop this morning -- basic setup because I like my action lower than it was.

I said before that this is a beautiful guitar,F7&F3.jpg and now I can say that it plays great as well. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.  The OO size is perfect for me, so comfortable, and it plays like butter. Very nice voice. It is giving my Forum III a run for its money, and I never thought I would ever say that.

I feel fortunate and grateful for this guitar, many thanks to Mike and Larrivee for making it all possible. I love this guitar.

Laos,

You have two really nice guitars there and the top on the 00 is a showstopper. I'm glad to see you left the pick guard off. I've been playing my mahogany topped 00 for almost 17 months now. It only gets better with age and I'm using light gauge Martin Monel Retros on mine.

I too ordered a OO, but with the Walnut back and sides, but am still waiting on delivery. Pictures will be posted upon arrival.

Out of curiosity, did anyone get a signed label in their guitar? I wonder if it would be possible for Larrivee to send some out at a future date?  I'd be happy to put a signed label over the existing label.

Not signed and not a 'custom label' as I thought it would be.  I thought we'd get a label similar to the 'FVI' special label that was signed.  Beginning to think it was a bit rushed at the end.

So, decided I'd do a quick recording.  Factory strings feel a bit 'off' for me and will need to change or just get used to these for a while.  Also, not quite used to the harmonics yet.  However, since a couple of you have asked for a recording, here's a short version of my tune 'Cumberland Toad'.  No editing, one take, warts and all.

Well, it appears mp3 files can't be uploaded here.  I'll get it posted to YT and provide the link when available.   Quick video done.  Here's the link...

Hello Folks!

I've got some exciting updates and a slight change of plans to share. I'm currently down in Oxnard and was able to get everything done we wanted to do—especially since the Forums were completed and shipped earlier than expected! This afternoon, we put together special packages for each of you and sent them out via FedEx. (Jazzereh, yours is heading your way via government post to Canada, and Jkwokbee, I'll hand-deliver yours—complete with the guitar—when I see you next week. JasonChamb, your guitar was picked up today and is already on its way!)

Keep an eye out for a fun little surprise in your packages, along with a couple of extra goodies and the flash drive we originally promised. The drive is formatted ExFAT, so it should work seamlessly on both Mac and Windows computers—no compatibility worries!

Thanks so much for being part of this journey—it's been a blast! Big thanks to everyone for your enthusiasm and to Mike for keeping everything running smoothly. And of course, a shoutout to my brother and the whole Larrivée team for crafting another fantastic FORUM model.

Regards
- john jr.

It's truly a very special and unique process, these Forum guitar projects. In my mind, the Larrivee family, and their extended family of employees, treat us to the ultimate customer experience by doing this for us. Both times I've participated in this process have left me with two very stunning guitars, both with unique ingredients, and well below market value pricing. I am forever thankful.
As a side note, I played my VII at a small venue, lower volume gig yesterday, and it continued to surprise me in the best ways. It's a pretty powerful guitar, and in a few songs when I wanted to emphasize the bass, wow, it's got a very sweet and powerful response that kind of catches you off-guard. And in softer, more delicate moments, the notes ring out crystal clear and with crisp clarity between strings. I'm playing thru an LR Baggs Venue DI and into a Fishman SA330x with the 330 subwoofer, and it took some time to find the right settings to truly capture the guitar's voice, which is not an easy task. The internal Baggs dual source is a great pick-up and seems to work well with the redwood top. Needless to say, I absolutely love this guitar! And I've already named her "Red".

I've enjoyed reading the comments, reactions and accolades from the Forum VII gang about their new guitars. The fact that Larrivee gave you a choice of two body sizes (00 and 000), three choices for the back and sides (walnut, mahogany or rosewood), a unique top and a really cool headstock logo cannot be overstated. Neither can the fact that the creation and completion of these guitars are a real family affair.

P.S. to Jazzereh: I'm glad you left the warts on your recording, it sounded great. Gordon Lightfoot and his band recorded The WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD in one take at Eastern Sound Studio in Toronto back in December 1975. That first take is what you hear on the album so you're in good company.

Thanks for all the comments, guys, appreciate the support.  The guitar does feel a bit stiff at the moment and the recording I did is far from great but I thought you might get a bit of an impression about the sound from it.

I'm certainly not in the same category as Gordon Lightfoot!!  :doh   And the video footage is just stock videos that are included in the software although I probably could have used a go-pro on my tractor for that first one.

Looking forward to the 'surprise' package.

Larrivee's 12 fret join 000 bodies have the potential for nice bass.  My 000-40R has nice bass; it's noticably stronger than my OM-05.  Of course the bracing patterns and woods are different also.

Many thanks to John and the Larrivee crew.

Additionally, wanted to add a comment about the FVII.  Having played it quite a bit now, I'm amazed at the wonderful timbre - top to bottom.  And one thing that I'm really thrilled about are the harmonics.  I play harmonics as part of some of the tunes I do and they just ring out forever.  This guitar is wonderful.

Jazzereh,

Nice job on the video clip and a nice wake-up call for the last Saturday morning of winter. The video should eliminate any concerns about the capabilities of a smaller body size to deliver across the bass, mids and trebles. Dreadnought, Jumbo and L bodies are no longer the only choices for delivering a solid bass presence.

I'm sure it was worth the wait.

With my tin ear, I can't pinpoint what the redwood top is bringing, but I really do love the 000 size, along with the mahogany b&s. It has a lovely deep bass and the 12 fret bridge placement gives off a warm rounded sound.

To the moderators.

If possible, can you update the link to Forum guitars to include the Forum VII? This would be useful to preserve and consolidate the history and evolution of guitars built between the Forum membership and Larrivee. On January 8, 2014, Queequeg posted a link to the past Forum guitars which is a helpful resource. Based on my review of these past builds, all Forum models are special and unique in their own way. The Moonwood top on the Forum VI and Redwood top on the Forum VII really set those two guitars apart.

I just spent the last 30 minutes scrolling through the Forum VI comments on the Forum Link and printed a screenshot of the final specs. I verified that the only two changes I made throughout the thread included switching to a Venetian cutaway and adding a factory installed pickup based on John's advice. Since then, I've added an all mahogany 00-24 and Baker T Pro to the mix and John set up a tour of the company with Matt.

Last weekend I put on some DR sunbeams lights. They gave the guitar a super warm mellow tone. They are round core, so if you want to try them, remember to put a 90 degree kink in the wound strings to keep the core from slipping inside the winding, resulting in a dead string sound.

Maybe I'll give these a shot. I've been at a loss for which strings to try on my Forum VII (000, Redwood/Black Walnut).

I'm not real crazy about the strings it came with, sounded pretty good at first but as time goes by, they just don't sound right (can't really describe what I mean).

What has everyone else tried????

The DR Sunbeams are the only strings I've tried so far after taking off the factory strings (d'darrio EJ16's if I'm not mistaken?). Next set I may try is Martin retro monel strings, because I've had great success with those.

I believe Larrivée uses D'Addario XT's.

I'm a fan of Retro's on certain guitars, tried them on my Forum VI and took them off very shortly after.

I'm thinking of trying the Ernie Ball Bell Bronze on the Forum VII, they sound good on the Forum VI, time will tell I guess.

SP6,

As you enter the monel rabbit hole, if you like the sound check out the Curt Mangans and the Newtones (a bit pricey with the tariff).
