Title: Larrivee Rosewood top, back & sides
Post by: shellback on December 23, 2024, 05:00:01 AM
Just curious if any have seen those Larrivee L's? OM's perhaps with Rosewood tops, back & sides or was it all just an East Indian pipedream I had? Wonder how that no combo sounds?

I've seen a couple all-rosewoods online in recent years, though I don't recall if they were both Larrivees. One was posted in a thread here. Pretty dark sounding, just based on the videos. I could see why they aren't popular. I think, if you want to do all-hardwood, brighter ones like Mahogany, Walnut, and Koa tend to work out better. I actually prefer Koa and Mahogany to spruce as they just sound more interesting to me. Not sure I'd chance it on Rosewood though I'd love to try one.

Here is a video example of an all-rosewood guitar from Tune Up Guitars.

Wow, I was expecting it to sound sort of muddy but that thing has clarity and real character.  It's also stunning to look at!  Wow!

I don't know what I was expecting when watching the video, but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the sound,I liked the quality looking satin finish, plus maple bound fretboard, what's not to like,I've always been a sucker for Rosewood anyway,so I'm sold on it,the guy picking in the demo was kinda restrained in his fingering, almost holding back, which made me wonder what it would sound like played a bit harder, ten out of ten Larrivee.

..Also wondered what that model would sound like in a 12- fret version, pretty damn good I'd say.

I'd check out the clip with headphones on. I felt it was too bass dominant and cloudy for me to ever consider. On my phone speaker it's got nice clarity but the headphones reveal a lot I don't like. YMMV.

Tried with headphones and I THINK I like it. Seemed to emphasize the bell/piano like chimney sound of RW. I watched 3 different videos from tune up guitars of a regular OM-03R for comparison, and all 3 made the guitar sound different depending on song, player, mic, mic placement. You ask, why didn't I just play mine for comparison? Well the wife is asleep and we live in a small home with wood floors lol! Really is hard to tell without trying one in person. But I sure would love to try one! Big fan of RW Larrivees!
