Title: A week of live shows
Post by: teh on October 31, 2023, 09:04:50 AM
This week, I had the opportunity to attend three live shows. As mentioned in an early post, my son and I saw Bob Dylan at the recently renovated Warner Theatre in Erie, PA on Monday 10/23.

Saturday 10/28, we drove to Newark, OH to see Lyle Lovett and Leo Kottke in a 2+ hour program called "In Conversation and Song" at the 95 year old Midland Theatre. We saw one of the best shows in the nicest seats I've had in a long time. The format was two guys sitting in chairs with two guitars alternating songs and swapping stories about their experiences, guitars, people they've met and played with along the way and road trips. They played 19 songs ending with a duet. Leo played several songs I've never seen him play live including Mona Ray, Busted Bicycle, Living in the Country and Julie's House with a story for each. He told the audience he became a better player by painting himself into a corner on stage and getting himself out of it than he ever learned anywhere else.

On Sunday, I drove 6 hours to Fall's Church, VA to meet two friends and we went to The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA to see John McCutcheon and Tom Paxton & The DonJuans. John and Tom spent the first half of the show covering songs they wrote together online during the pandemic. Tom, who turned 86 today, returned for the second half of the show with the DonJuans and sang many of his old favorites with John joining in on a couple of tunes.

Nice way to spend a week and rack up 981 miles in the car listening to podcasts and music.

Good to see a fellow like Paxton still going at 86. Dylan is 82. Kottke, a youngster at 78. Lovett a baby at 65. Gives me hope!

Thanks for sharing the info on David Francey who I had not heard of before. He was born the same year as me and I went to his website. Unfortunately, the closest he will get to me on his tour dates is Parry Sound, Ontario on 11/11 and that date does not work for me. I did notice he has some interesting artwork for sale too.

Colin Hay was born in the same area of Scotland as David and he will be in VA on 4/4/24 so I am looking into tickets for his solo show.

Sites like this forum continue to be a good source of information and entertainment for me.
