Title: Steve Earle concert
Post by: teh on August 29, 2023, 08:34:54 PM
My son and I saw Steve Earle play a solo acoustic set in Buffalo last night. He played for two hours straight (no break) with a Martin OM and jumbo 12 string, two mandolins and an assortment of harmonicas.

This was a great show. For anyone who questions whether an OM or 000 can hold its own in a big room, they should see Steve play. He was really dialed in last night.

Rare to see someone perform with an OM!  Sounds like a fantastic show

I've seen him twice. I'm a fan of his music, listened to his radio show on Sirius, have most of his albums, but find it very difficult to like him.

This morning, I'm sitting and looking out over Georgian Bay listening to the rain and surfing the internet. Here is a short list of acoustic performers who will be within driving distance of me in the next four months in no particular order:

Bruce Cockburn - I saw him in June but worth another look.
The Chapin Family
Bob Dylan
Leo Kottke/Lyle Lovett
Jerry Douglas
Tom Paxton/John McCutcheon - I already have tickets for this one
Jack Williams is doing a guitar workshop in Seattle when I'm there. He plays a roadworn D35 but his guitar has more mojo than mine.

Most of these are in smaller venues but Billy Strings is coming to Pittsburgh in December for two nights at the Peterson Center. That seems tempting.

A veritable deluge of talent coming your way.
I never tire of seeing Leo Kottke but I've lost count. His patter is as good as his music.
Just saw Jerry Douglas last month.
You will not be disappointed.
As he introduced his band, he said "as a band leader you don't want to be the best player in your band". High praise and it just might be true in this case.

Dylan will be in Milwaukee in October for two nights. Small venue. Cheapest seats $200.00. I'm thinking he won't be doing this a lot longer. However, I've seen him six times and I'm at a point where I wouldn't pay that much to see the second coming. I'll put on Shadow Kingdom and have a beer at home. I'd be tempted by Billy Strings too but I won't take out a second mortgage to see any of these guys. Must be getting old.
