Title: Setup Question
Post by: Silence Dogood on June 15, 2023, 09:44:14 AM
I've been using lighter strings and enjoying them a lot, but since I tune down a whole step I'm getting some slight buzz when I really dig in and strum.  Nothing major but enough to annoy me.

I've never been one to make truss rod adjustments, etc, but I don't want to spend $50 at the tech to have him turn a wrench a 1/4 turn either.  I'd like to learn to do this myself.

Which way should I turn the truss rod to get rid of the buzz?  Or is even the correct solution?

You'll turn the truss rod nut clockwise.  The first couple times getting the wrench in can be a little tricky and a "mirror on a stick" may help.

p.s.:  if you look at http://frets.com/FretsPages/pagelist.html there is a ton of info on sewing up a guitar and how to check for things like how much relief you have/should have.

Thanks!   How much do I turn it?   Just a bit and then check for buzzing? Pretty sure I have a Larrivee truss rod tool around somewhere...

I'd say no more than an eighth turn at a time.  Turn it, tune, try it, repeat as needed.  It shouldn't take much.

Good luck.  Once you do it, it's a piece of cake.

I'm used to adjusting truss rod from the headstock, mostly on electrics...so forgive my question but turning the nut on a larrivee clockwise, you would still be tightening the truss rod, would you not?  And tightening would be reducing relief and not accomplish the intent to reduce string buzz or am I wrong?

Duh...  yes, you are correct.  Apologies to Silence Dogood.  And, thanks for pointing that out.
