Ok then.
Maybe other folks around here have this figured out.
Ya ya, strings and tone woods and everybody's ears and preferences are different.
I can safely share the fact that Monel strings are at their best with Mahogany guitars.
Not so much on rosewood (BZ or EI).
Still haven't tried a set on Maple.
Fire away.
I gave up that string game years ago...well mostly anyway.I suggest to most mando players that they should try nickle silver string,to my ear they get rid of that mid frq..If you want that old timey tone try the nickle silver strings.
Keep smilin and keep dancin :nanadance
I've been very happy using martin's retro strings on my OM and they are monel. I think they really do last longer because the alloy is corrosion resistant. However, the name "monel" has got to be the ugliest name for a metal alloy. It sounds like a disease you get from kissing stray alley cats- not that there's anything wrong with that. :humour:
Thanks for the advice. I recently purchased a Martin D-15. It is strung with Martin Lifespan 2.0 Phosphor Bronze. And I do like this sound, but I'll get a set of monel's and give them a try. I was amused at a tag on the neck stating we needed the best strings, so we made them ours3elves LOL!!! :laughin:
I'm trying out a set of Retro strings right now. That really is a different sound. I like it. I have to have one of my instruments strung with these strings.
I love the retro monels also! :thumb
I really like the Retro's (monel) on Mahogany guitars.
My Forum VI (walnut and moonwood spruce) sounded great right out of the box too and putting a set of Retros on last month took sounding "great" up a couple of notches.
This guitar along with my 12 string mahogany Larrivee and 000 12 fret mahogany Martin have been getting most of the playing time this Fall and adding a Venetian cutaway to both of my "L" bodied Larrivees was one of the best decisions I made. I will try a set of Retros on my 000 on the next string change.
I have Newtone Masterclass strings on my L-05 and love them. They bring out the warmth in the mahogany and mellow out the E and B strings. I have tried Monels but like the Newtones better. They really make a Larrivee sound goooood!
