Title: My Awesome 1993 Larivee 12 String
Post by: Vibrant 12 on April 14, 2021, 02:26:47 PM
My first post and would like to say Hello to Everyone!
I'm the original owner of this truly amazing sounding musical instrument.
This story began in 1994 or 95 trying to find the best sounding 12 string at Tom Lee (old store on Granville)
Thank You Brenden, for getting 3 players jamming to compare High end Taylor, Guild, & the Larivee together in the sound room.
It wasn't long before a consensus was reached, the Larivee 12 String tonal quality blew the doors off the other 12 string competition.
Perfect clarity, incredible sustain, who needs a pick up..this thing is loud & proud!
Hoping photo appears as direct linked.

I have the serial number, yet I would like to ask how does one get the tech build specs or is it possible?
Example: Ebony fret board, Spruce top, Mahogany back, how many were built that year etc etc.

You can get the birthdate by following instructions HERE (https://www.larrivee.com/manufacture-date-lookup)

They will most likely give you the model # as well. You are not likely going to be given the # of guitars built that year however most everything else once you share the info you receive from Larrivee can be discussed and figured out here

:cheers

Nice looking guitar and a great story with 25+ years of memories.

I have a similar experience from 2005 when Jim Holler from Trinity Guitars ordered a custom LV03 12 String with mahogany top, back and sides, bone nut and compensated saddle set up. Nothing else came close at that price point and my Larrivee out performed guitars at twice the price.

TEH -WOW you have quite the amazing collection indeed !!
You could invite all your guitar friends over & have quite the jam, I want to hear that recording !! :bgrin:
Dang, I timed out, and will try to copy & paste & see what happens, hopefully that works out ok.
Thanks! Look up provides Dec 13, 1993- Model D-12. Should there not be another set of numbers like (dreadnought) D-12-05 for instance?

The guitar has a Victoria Label circa 1982 to 1994 and this label remained in circulation during  Mr. Larivee's North Vancouver shop/days, before he moved to Victoria Drive I assume.
The labels can be found online under  Label History - Archives & Artifacts - Larrivée Guitars

I did find this brochure  from the era where I wrote D-05 along the bottom right hmm..

Would it be safe to say that the dry or cure time would be 1.5 to 2 years before being sent off to a retailer ?

Welcome to the Forum, Vibrant 12.
Great looking guitar and I dig the outdoor/pastoral/bucolic photo.

Thank you for the warm welcome here folks ! Glad you liked the Country Style Image.
After the pandemic is over, I hope to find others in the Vancouver BC region that may want to get together & Jam.

I'll even bring some boxes of Doughnuts to share, even some "Jam" filled ones !  :bgrin:

Love the large soundhole!

My '92 OM-05 has the same label (of course) and sound hole rosette. It's the one that I'll hang on to till the end.

As to drying times - no. Larrivee used to use ultraviolet light to "dry" their finishes (don't know if this is still the case), so the drying/curing time was actually pretty quick. Larrivee doesn't use nitro finishes, but their finish is pretty thin, very durable, and sonically perfect for producing good tone.

Interesting, on your  '92 OM-05 what kind of pick guard did it have ? Mine has the clear pick guard.
In 1991 they were only producing 25 guitars per day.
I Just found some valuable information in 1995 they switched from polyurethane to McFadden UV polyester finish.
He had a shop in North Van but opened the 1993-98: Victoria Diversion shop in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I later met Jean Larivee there.
1993: 50/60/70 series introduced with large sound holes, 383 built.
As a 1993 12 string, they were not as popular, I would guess not that many were produced. This 12 may be a much rarer guitar than I thought.

One thing I really like about my 12 is the hand picked woods that Larivee used.
In this era all of the sitka spruce came from Old growth forest trees in BC.
