Hello,
Just picked up a new guitar - the Larrivee 000-40 Legacy Series.
What a great guitar. I'm really impressed with the spec sheet on these as well, almost perfect!
Anyone have one of these? Can you recommend any string choices that pair well with the new bracing system?
Cheers!

Hello,
Just picked up a new guitar - the Larrivee 000-40 Legacy Series.
Well, we be jealous. I have been keeping my out for these lately, not so common. Mostly cause they are 12 fret.
Is it mahogany or rosewood?
No particular string recommendations. I am all over the map, but I usually stick with 11-52 or 12-53/54 phosphor bronze and I finger pick.
Others merely recommend "six new ones".
Let us know when you get sick of it!!
Mike
Thanks Mike!
This one is mahogany!

I agree, I have been hunting 12 fret guitars for years and good ones are tough to come by.
I had been dead set on a Martin 000-16sgt but I'm starting to be convinced these are better. I'm especially fond of the touch of flair they've put behind this series too.
Ah oh yes I forgot the donuts!

Congrats! Nice guitar.
Regarding strings, that's a personal choice. If you want a brighter tone, there's brighter strings. Then there's more mellow sounding ones for those who want a fuller tone. If you've got a specific preference, I can make a recommendation.
Thanks Bowie.
String wise, I normally use Plectrums, Silk and Steel or the Martin Marquis.
I'd be leaning towards something mellow and with a quicker decay, the bracing really allows the guitar to ring out.
Of course experimentation is part of the fun and I haven't had a Larrivee in the house for too long (other was a parlor) so suggestions could go a long way.
Cheers!

That is really a great looking guitar. I'll bet it has a crisp mahogany tone too. My Brazilian Larrivees sound great with Daddario EXP17 phosphor bronze.
Elixir Nanos sound good too, but slightly metallic. Enjoy that guitar. :nana_guitar
Brazilian Larrivee's? 😱
Thanks Hoops!

It sounds like you have a solid idea of which strings are going to give you the type of tone you're after. Those are all excellent for a more mellow sound. I really like Newtone strings on Larrivees, for giving more overtone content without being bright. But, those are a bit expensive and hard to find.

Welcome to Larry Land...

As to string recommendations, based on what you described, have you tried Martin's Monel Retro strings yet? Just pick the gauge of your choice. Give them 3-5 days to settle in, and you'll be experiencing some incredible fundamental tone and mahogany richness.
Another brand/set that I've been impressed with and using a lot lately (on Larrivees AND Martins) is DR Strings Veritas line. I find the Light set to punch above it's weight, making me not miss Mediums at all. And they last a long time (Phosphor Bronze). With the Veritas, try the extra Xenon plain B and E strings that are included (with the gold tint); they sound a little thicker and richer than plain steel strings do (to my ears, at least).
:welcome: to the loonie bin :wave

I like the top, herringbone and tortoise pick guard. I'll bet it sound nice too.
Thanks everyone!
I will absolutely add Newtone, Martin Monels and DR Veritas to my list. I've never tried either of the brands, thank you!
Will report back.

Another vote for Newtone here. Although their scarcity has caused me to move to other strings for my LV05 and my D35S, they were the best strings I have ever used with regard to tone. I believe these days the only way to acquire them in the states is direct via their website from Great Britain with a bit of a wait for delivery.
Newtones it is! Thanks everyone!

Congrats on your new Larrivee; on my OM-03 after installing bone bridge pins from Larrivee, I have found my string of choice to be GHS phos. bronze 12's. 80/20's seemed too bright and while I'm a fan of DR Veritas phoh.bronze strings, the GHS strings simply work the best to my ears. One great thing about strings, for normally less than ten dollars a set, you can have fun experimenting w/o breaking the bank...Happy playing :donut :coffee
