Title: Phaser Pedal Suggestion?
Post by: WillettaZavala on December 21, 2019, 06:36:44 AM
Greetings!

Hopefully, you are enjoying the last Saturday before Christmas. I am also interested in some shopping. Though I have 2 guitars from Larrivée Acoustic series but this winter, I am in the mood to buy some good accessories. That's why I am willing to get a good phaser pedal. Although I never played the guitar with phaser pedal but according to my friends, it would be easy to use. Actually, I want the flanging effect and found this list of the best phasers ( https://www.sound-beat.com/bass-pedals-effects/phaser/ ). Can you please suggest which one would be the best option for me as a beginner?

Secondly, also tell me about your experience with bass pedals. According to my dad, who has less knowledge of music, I am just wasting money. So. please come with encouraging remarks and tips.

Waiting for your suggestions.

Effects for acoustic? Here's a good video by the great Doug Young. Check out the chorus effect at around 8:30. I think chorus works better than a phaser especially on acoustic. The Boss Chorus is a real nice unit.

We may be struggling to give you an answer because we don't know much about you and your guitars.

1. What model of guitars?
2. What kind of pickups in those guitars.
3. What amplifier are you using?
4. Are you using a pre-amp in between the guitar and the amp?
5. Are you strumming or finger picking?

My personal preference on acoustic effects (when used) are a touch of reverb and a touch of chorus.
Phaser and bass effects are kind of sorta way out there unless a really unusual sound is the goal.

Here is a set up very similar to mine. I don't have most of my pedals anymore but I do still have some including the Boss Bass pedal............check it out at 7.37.

I don't use many pedals with my acoustics.  A little reverb is all. My electrics, however, I'm loaded for bear.

Oh yes, you said the magic word. I play better when I'm loaded.  :nana_guitar

At least, I think I do.   :arrow

List of my pedals (with Boss BCB 60 pedal board):

Boss SD1 Super Overdrive
Boss GE7 EQ
Boss TR2 Tremolo
Boss Fender '65 Reverb
Boss TU-8 tuner
Boss GP20 Amp Factory
Boss DD3 Digital Delay
JangleBox Compression
Fender Flanger
Dunlop volume pedal
Vox Cry Baby wah wah
Morley wah wah
Norlin Maestro Fuzz
Norlin Maestro Phaser

I think that's all of them. The Norlins I use for book ends because that's about all they're good for. The Boss pedals I have to swap in and out of the board, of course.

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, looking for acoustic.  But, as a beginner, due to thinking the chorus is easy to play as compared to phaser?

Well, pedals don't make the guitar "easier to play" in any way. You can disguise simple things making them sound more, I don't know,  complex? using certain effects like distortion and delay. Phase shifting is more of an effect for electric guitars in my opinion and like stated above is more for otherworldly sounds. Chorus will fatten up your sound adding color. It's basically a form of delay. Reverb is the most essential effect for an acoustic guitar, at least in my opinion. Is there no way you can go into a guitar store and try some of these effects?

I agree 100%, one of those phases I was goin through in my earlier days. You don't really need it.

What I should have added is that, other than a wah wah or volume pedal which take some skill and co-ordination, you don't play the pedals, you play through them. If you're using a floor pedal (stomp pedal as they are sometimes called) as opposed to a rack mounted unit, for on/off it's just a matter of depressing a button with your foot and the pedal does its thing as you play. You adjust the volume, speed and intensity etc. of the effect by hand. Simple as that.
