I've been a member since 2010 and drop in here everyday to see what's going on in the Larrivee world. I rarely post because it has gotten increasingly difficult to have any form of real discussion on almost anything. This is mostly due to a couple of bad actors but they seem to be allowed to continue unabated so I stay mostly silent. As do many others I'm sure. That's fine I guess if that's the the way the mods and the senior members want it. Personally, I'd like to participate more but been burned too many times and have seen the way others have been treated on countless occasions. I guess I just wanted to add my support to eded. I have certainly felt the same thing on numerous occasions.

I did not lock your thread but I believe I can tell you why it was locked. Look at the last post on that thread. The video link is, or at least should be, offensive to most members for it's language. The fact that the person who posted it is a long time member means he should have known better but he knew how to stir things up. Pushing the envelope and stirring the pot is par for the course on most forums and moderators / admin. are constantly faced with making decisions about how to preserve the civility that this particular forum is known for.
I will be discussing these items with Admin. Eded has made the assertion that the forum is run by the an old-timers club that plays favorites. "Kiss the right butt and you can say whatever you want" is how he put it. Just for the record, my butt is not available for kissing. I do the job of helping to moderate this place for now but I will step down if membership feels that new blood is needed. It would be nice if moderators and admin. were not needed at all. But I think we've all seen how quickly things can go off the rails if there is no one in charge of the asylum.
Yes this is a funny place.

Perhaps I shouldn't have posted a song that was on a pretty well known album by a very well known artist. I really don't know anyone who hasn't heard it before and found it very humorous. I was hoping to make the thread funny ha ha rather than funny weird. I did warn that it might be offensive to some, especially anyone that actually finds "Baby it's Cold Outside" offensive, didn't I? You had to follow the link. The fact that someone who has apparently decided they don't care for me also decided to take it personally, although it was aimed at the people behind the original poster's initial post, was not my intention.

Are you sure you're talking about this forum? It's probably among the nicest on the internet. Any forum can get a little pi$$y now and then. We talk about vital stuff like string gauge and pick size, after all. Come on in, no one's died of rabies yet. :beer

I would draw your attention to rule #1. If we want to omit the obscenity ban then that can be easily done. Opening that can of worms, though seems to me like it would do more towards driving people away than your fear that having some basic obscenity rule would. Maybe most people these days are not offended by having an artist shout F--k You at them from their speakers. That's fine. In my personal life I use words that I would not use on a form such as this. I realize we've become de-sensitized to such things these days. Listen to high school students as they speak to each other. times change. Having said that, I would also note that the "offending" video is still linked on the thread in question. So you can listen to it to your heart's content. I will also tel you that I've learned the thread was not locked because of the link but rather as a result of other violations of our forum rules regarding civility to one another and comments were deleted, That's a whole different thing. It's been my experience that people will always try to push the envelope. Shall we do away with the request to keep things civil too ? It's not easy trying to keep things running smoothly here and frankly it's a thankless job. You will make someone mad no matter what.
Its just a d*mn song written a long time ago. Then some idiot decides its an evil thing and no one needs to hear it anymore. As we say in my house "it is what it is,deal with it and grow up.","no big deal".
Love Harry Nilsson,all of it.
So as the book says,"so long and thanks for all the fish".
You and others do a great job Tuffy. I myself don't see the need for obscenity to express what needs to be expressed on this forum. You yourself, at least in the past for sure, used to post hilarious stuff while skirting around using profanity but still getting point across. I rather like that myself. Use your brain instead of just grabbing the nearest sledgehammer. I'm not offended personally by an F'bomb so much but there are others on here that may be and I would guess are. And offended might not be the right word for all. Plus obscenity often leads to the uncivil banter we don't want. We can all get a bit unruly at times and having level headed moderators is good. There's enough lowering of standards going on without letting this generally mature and respectful site being sucked down. Carry on!
Is there a difference between using a vulgarity (which the word technically is, not a profanity or an obscenity) and linking to a classic song that uses one? I believe there is. One is art. I wouldn't stand in a city square butt naked but The David does and it's considered a great work. Go figure.

Sailor man walks into a bar and spies a Pirate.
Pirate has a hook hand, peg leg and eye patch.
The Sailor says "Buy you a drink if you tell me about that hook?"
The Pirate says "Aye, lost to a saber fight. Arrrr."

"Lost to a shark whilst overboard."
"Ouch, that's harsh. What about the eye?"
"Grapefruit."
"A grapefruit did that to your eye?"

Although it's been a few weeks since the last post in this thread, I thought I might resurrect and comment, as I do not frequent this forum so much anymore and stated my reason some time back--which seems to be the course of this thread.
First off; Tuffy, Queegueg, and Joyce--you really do very well at a thankless task. And yes, Joyce, I had your 12/21/18 post in heart and mind when I decided to just Let It Be and go somewhere else when I wanted online reading and interacting. I don't consider myself overly sensitive (I taught alternative ed. for 19 yrs!), but found the sniping and dismissiveness (in too many threads) more than I cared for.
I still do peek in, having friends I still want to keep in contact with, and it is hoped the (almost typed a rude accusatory pejorative--but I try to live in grace) ones chasing others away will find some empathy and social sensibility.
Random acts of kindness anyone?
"Sniping and dismissiveness in too many threads"? Worse than other forums? :?

I, too, check in here occasionally now, mostly to see what's up with NAMM and to see who has passed on recently. I was a relatively new, but certainly old, member to the Larrivee family. I quit contributing after I was dressed down for a post that I had "baited" another member to respond in a fit of obscenity. Interesting that the member had responded to other posts in much the same way, but I never saw any discipline to him or changes in his behavior. I don't remember which moderator did the dressing down, but it convinced me that my forum participation would be better served elsewhere.

Well Moderating is far from a science and us Moderator's too make errors in judgement. But we are always willing to learn and grow from past decisions. The actions of the Moderator in the case that has upset you, may not have been shared with you. But since you saw little change in the Offenders behaviour you suggest favouritism on the part of the Moderator(s) is a tad offensive to me but maybe with age my skin is starting to thin.
Since you cast it; what thread are you speaking of? From which, maybe we can improve our way of doing things and your suggestion of what the Moderator should have done would be welcomed.

Floater - Bob Dylan
Down over the window
Comes the dazzling sunlit rays
Through the back alleys, through the blinds
Another one of them endless days
Honeybees are buzzin'
Leaves begin to stir
I'm in love with my second cousin
I tell myself I could be happy forever with her
I keep listenin' for footsteps
But I ain't ever hearing any
From the boat I fish for bullheads
I catch a lot, sometimes too many
A summer breeze is blowing
A squall is settin' in
Sometimes it's just plain stupid
To get into any kind of wind
Well, the old men 'round here, sometimes they get on
Bad terms with the younger men
Old, young, age don't carry weight
It doesn't matter in the end
One of the boss' hangers-on
Sometimes omes to call at times you least expect
Try to bully ya, strong arm ya, inspire you with fear
It has the opposite effect
There's a new grove of trees on the outskirts of town
The old one is long gone
Timber two-foot six across
Burns with the bark still on
They say times are hard, if you don't believe it
You can just follow your nose
It don't bother me, times are hard everywhere
Well, we'll just have to see how it goes
My old man, he's like some feudal lord
Got more lives than a cat
I never seen him quarrel with my mother even once
Things come alive or they fall flat
You can smell the pine wood burnin'
You can hear the school bell ring
Gotta get up near the teacher if you can
If you want to learn anything
Romeo, he said to Juliet, "You got a poor complexion
It doesn't give your appearance a very youthful touch"
Juliet said back to Romeo, "Why don't you just shove off
If it bothers you so much"
They all got out of here any way they could
The cold rain can give you the shivers
They went down the Ohio, the Cumberland, the Tennessee
All the rest of them rebel rivers
If you ever try to interfere with me or cross my path again
You do so at the peril of your own life
I'm not quite as cool or forgiving as I sound
I've seen enough heartaches and strife
My grandfather was a duck trapper
He could do it with just dragnets and ropes
My grandmother could sew new dresses out of old cloth
I don't know if they had any dreams or hopesI had 'em once though, I suppose
To go along with all the ring dancin' Christmas carols on all the Christmas Eves
I left all my dreams and hopes
Buried under tobacco leaves
Not always easy kicking someone out
Gotta wait a while, it can be an unpleasant task
Sometimes somebody wants you to give something up
And tears or not, it's too much to ask

You mean Ian Tyson? Ha! I guess I've always seen Dylan as a 60s political figure and it kept me from being interested. And speaking of Tyson, they hung out early on. Tyson has gone on record of criticizing Dylan for singing about working people but never doing a day's work in his life. Some of it sounded like sour grapes but I got the point. I did like The Traveling Wilburys a lot, though it didn't really showcase Dylan much.

What can I say? I can't agree with any of that. Dylan is not a 60's political figure. He's a musician, singer and songwriter. In his own words, "a song and dance man". Tyson is great but like most musicians who followed Dylan, they owe him more than they can repay. Like Warren Zevon said on Letterman, "He invented my job." As for the Wilburys? Didn't showcase Dylan much? The rest of the band were all huge Dylan fans and, to me, deferred to him. On Volume One, who would have thought that he'd sing more than Roy Orbison? Anyway, he doesn't need me to defend him. George Harrison said, In 500 years Dylan will be the only one remembered or something to that effect. I think he was being a little modest.

Customer: hey I need some whoopee cushions and fake poop for some pranks I'm playing on a friend.
Clerk: Oh, that's more funny ha ha. This shop is more funny strange. Want to see some shrunken heads, or the Fiji mermaid?

Probably my loss. I know he's obviously a gifted songwriter, though it's secret he's not a great singer. But I supposed in my mind he's always been associated with the 60s protest culture, something I have no interest in or respect for. I was into the Wilburys mostly for Roy, Jeff, and Tom, though I'm sure Dylan's writing was one of the most magical elements to the group. There is some great footage of how the Wilburys did their thing on Youtube somewhere. Haven't seen it in years but it's video of them being in a house, writing, recording, etc. Looks like it would've been a lot of fun being in that group.

Heh. Bob took advantage of the folk movement for a couple years and while he may have invented the genre, he also had little interest with the protest culture and quickly abandoned it. Pretty much putting an end to a lot of careers. The others whined for him to come back and just couldn't keep up.
His generally acknowledged, mid 60's masterpieces, 'Bringing it All Back Home', 'Highway 61 Revisited' and 'Blonde on Blonde' are all indispensable rock'n'roll and while containing great songs and terrific playing, contain no politics to speak of. If he'd recorded nothing else, these would place him in the Hall of Fame. However, his trio of late 90's early 00's albums are almost as good. And there are quite a few other decent albums sprinkled here and there. I guess I just don't believe anyone makes 50 albums if they aren't doing things right. And then there's the Nobel Prize, for what that's worth.
I also think he's a pretty good singer. Not pretty but effective. And it is odd that the other Wilburys let him sing most of the songs.

My Dylan thoughts....Biggest influence on song writing of folk, rock and pop since he came on scene. Just opened everything up. I too think he's a very good singer, just doesn't have a voice that appeals to a lot of people. So what do I mean? A lot of his songs if you go and learn to sing them just like him. you can see how different and cool his phrasing is. Same somewhat even with his harmonica. Like what seems like a simple little solo like the one in "I'll be your baby tonight" If you play harmonica you'll quickly realize that some of the notes aren't there on a standard harp. The part that would match up to "need to be afraid" I don't know if he used 2 harps or had a special tuned one but either way, more thought went into it than you would first think. More social commentary than political but some would be a matter of interpretation, and so many of his songs are left up to interpretation. So ends up being more of the listeners thoughts than his, which is part of the genious. The other part of writing genious is nailing simple straight forward human emotion and condition as well. Like
"I threw it all away" damn don't listen to that after messing up a good thing! But back to political or not, he was into civil rights movement (political or social?) and songs like "Maggie's Farm" are ones that could easily be taken as political depending on where listeners head is. I only listen to him occasionally now and haven't listened a whole lot since a teen. But I always know and acknowledge that he is a huge influence on me. Blood On The Tracks one of greatest albums ever.

Dylan is a
funny guy. Both meanings being true.
I guess I never noticed Dylan singing the majority of the Wilburys stuff. I suppose my favorite songs were the ones he wasn't singing on. Jeff Lynne is one of my favorite artists of all time - he's a brilliant singer, writer, player, performer, and producer. I suppose Dylan is all of those things too, as well as George Harrison, Roy, Tom, et al. A bunch of talented folks. Plenty for everyone to like what he/she likes.
Dylan's "Christian" phase is of interest to me, having heard a lot of about it over the years. It would be interesting to understand more about that without the thread going religious.

'Slow Train Coming' would be the place to start. Pretty decent album. Then 'Saved' and 'Shot of Love'. He seems to do things in threes. Dylan is not your peace and love kind of Christian, though. More fire and brimstone. The Bootleg Series Volume 13 box set, 'Trouble No More' is absolutely sensational. The live stuff he did during his Christian period is tremendous. The band and women backing him up are great. I dare you to listen to this and say he can't sing. Regardless of how one feels about the religious aspect of this music, it would be difficult to deny its quality and passion.

There's a two disc version, as well, if you don't want to spring for the big set.

Agree with this, but I'm biased, being a big Dylan fan. Some of his stuff from the last 20 years is very good, too. And check out another one of his albums that is in my personal top 5: "Oh Mercy" from 1989.

Good luck finding Dylan's stuff on YouTube. He (or more likely someone who works for him) clamps down pretty hard on posting his stuff "for free" there. Stuff pops up once in a while, but it's not usually there for long.
