Title: An interesting piece of history
Post by: headsup on February 29, 2016, 10:49:08 AM
I found this listing earlier today.
I have NO affiliation with the guitar or it's owner.

I also own a Toronto 1977 Larrivee L.
I was pretty sure Dave was building with Jean at that time./
Perhaps Dave made this in Jeans shop?

I'll check with Dave and update, if these things matter to any one else...

Kevin, Dave went out on his own in 1977 - so this could be one of his 1st - see no reason to doubt the seller as seems to have a nice '74 Larrivee Dred as well

Yes, I have dealt with him, nice guy, and has some amazing guitars.
I agree, this could very well be one of Dave's very first guitars...
just waiting to hear back from him.

Wow. Looks an awful lot like a Larrivée. I had a similar thing with Linda Manzer after seeing a 1976 Manzer that looked exactly like my 1975 Larrivée. I contacted her by email, gave her some details, and she said she build my guitar. Who knows?

Uh oh,  your Larrivee is actually a Manzer? What now?    Is the label Larrivee?

"hand made in Toronto, ON, Canada by David Wren who trained along with Jean Larrivee, Linda Manzer and Grit Laskin"

Shouldn't that read "trained by Jean Larrivee" ?   :?

Of course, signed by someone named Jean Larrivée, which is why I found it odd for her to make that claim. Maybe she was being facetious but I don't know why she would be or say it if it wasn't true. Nobody seems to know just how much the apprentices did on any individual guitar.

Which has been a problem in luthiery for centuries, at least since Stradivari's time . . .

Good grief - it's a Larrivee right down to the rosette! And the border around the headstock (okay - THAT is slightly different. still...).

Lots of Larrivee influence there. And nice of Jean not to sue him for using his rosette pattern!  :whistling:
