I've noticed that Larrivee now shows models in the 05 series in thier catalog with Mahogany tops. Has anyone played these and can you describe differences with traditional sitka tops. I love the looks of these guitars.

We've got a lefty in the store that just sound great.I've played it upside down,I now know how lefties feel when playing rite handed.I thought the sound would be sort of mushy but that not true with this one real warm and crisp,even responce.
I played a L-03 hog top once and almost took it home. I like the all mahogany Larrivees and the Guild D-25's that were all mahogany.
Of course, I really like the Martin 000-15 too.
Mahogany tops really sound better than I thought they would. I'm with Rob on this one--he's a brave dude playing a lefty guitar! :GRN>

I've played an old Gibson hog top years ago, thought it sounded muddy, could have been the strings... :UND>

I've played a 1 very good one. Most of them are not my cup of tea.
I have an L-05MT sitting in my house right now that's being returned on monday...I definately like the sparkley sound of spruce a lot more.

Too bad Rok, but these hog-tops are not for everyone. There are times when my Martin hog sounds dull to me. That's when I pick up the SD-50 or LoPrinzi. But later the 000-15s blows me away with its "old wood" smoothness and tremendous midrange.
You might get out and play more MT's later, one might jump out at you.

I owned a D-15 for a short period...it was a super little guitar...I actually prefer it over the sound of the L-05MT...I also like the old vintage all hog gibson small bodies...the L-05MT in my house just sounds REALLY dull and muffled(not to mention the headstock logo is cracked under the finish)...Just bought a used breedlove revival Dreadnaught in mahogany...I'll own another larrivee oneday(really miss my l-03)...I'll probably get an OM-03R. I'll never go back to an all mahogany larrivee though...I do have to say though, it sounded ok in drop tunings w/ a slide...but I play in DADGAD w/ a slide maybe 5% of my playing time. I'm so stoked that I found a dreadnaught w/ a 1 3/4 nutwidth and an unbound ebony fretboard.

I too sent back a L-05MT. One of the issues was a really dead bass in it.

I recently played a new OM-03R that REALLY impressed me. The OM size with the rosewood punch is a great combination.
That Breedlove sounds like an excellent choice!
I have had an L05MT for more than a year and it gives me more pleasure than anything. I find that it sounds great no matter what is played on it. While that may not sound like an opinion based on discriminating taste, there is an appeal to them that is worth experimenting with. There is no explaining taste, but the hog top guitar is worth a try if the opportunity presents itself. I like the martin 15s too.

This is just an idea, but did you have the L-05MT long enough to try different strings on it?
I know that my 000-15 takes on a different life with the wrong strings. I have yet to have Martin strings on it, but I will try them. Right now, John Pearse and D'Addarios sound the best.
I am wondering if the L-03 finish lends itself to the all mahogany sound? The L-03 mahogany I played sounded very nice. The D-15's are nice as well.

As you all know I love my Hog top...it just fits with what I'm trying to play...perfect for fingerpickin blues. I think the other link posted will fill in the rest of my views...no need to repeat them once again.
I have also had strings on mine that really just didn't work out...I tried of DM phophor golds that just sounded terrible...I know many of you arn't Elixer fans...and I'm not a fan of their price....but I absolutly love the Nanoweb phophor bronze lights I have on my hog top now....plus its been more than a month and they still sound great.
I think the hog top is one of those things you just have to try to see if it fits with your style and pleases your ear....I guess thats true of any instrument though... :GRN>
