Title: Don't ya just hate hard-headed Know-It-Alls?
Post by: silvertone62 on February 26, 2012, 11:39:06 AM
...in the interest of self-loathing, I feel like one today. A few weeks ago, Eded suggested that I try "bluegrass" gauge on my Koa Parlor, and I replied that  I just might do that in the future but was plenty happy with the mediums I had just replaced my lights with. Well, I was (and kinda am )happy with the mediums, but I must confess that I thought "how could Eded possibly know as much or, God forbid, more about string gauges for a Parlor than almighty Me?" . Eded vs Me? C'mon, I don't even know the guy, who should I believe? Well, his kind suggestion ate away at me as I played away on the parlor for a few weeks. Could Eded be onto something? As Fate would have it, last night I came across an old set of "bluegrass gauge" in an unused gig bag in a closet and installed them on the Parlor immediately. I just had to know.

Well...Humble pie tastes a lot better with strong coffee and a better balanced  sounding Parlor. Thanks to Eded and THIS GREAT FORUM!

Uhm...  uh...  *blush*.

I saw "know it all" in the header, clicked, and saw my name.  The first thought that came to mind was, oh crap, what did I say now?  I'm glad it's working for you.   :cheers

Yeah, Ed, thanks again. The difference between medium and "bluegrass" is noticeable, even to my aged ears. Less over-pronounced trebles, I can play the parlor without adjusting my approach (more like "attack") from playing one of my large-bodied guitars. Cool!

Wide range of opinions, knowledge and perspectives around here. And thankfully many who are kind to share in a humble way is why I stick around.

Any extra weight I am carrying comes from large doses of humble pie on a regular basis.

Jonestown. Don't see references to that so much anymore, but I do remember it.

Bluegrass string guage. I had to know. So I put them on my L-09 and played a big kitchen party concert in Kingston, Ontario with folks on harmonica, mandolin, piano and accordion (which actually worked surprisingly well).

The bluegrass strings were great in that environment.

And so it goes....

How long until you switch back to mediums?  :whistling:

Good question, Steam-powered. So far, after about 6 hours of playing, they still sound righteous on my Koa Parlor. The Mediums seemed to really over- punctuate the B and little E, and I had to adjust my playing style when shifting from my large bodied guitars. It's a bright sounding little thing as it is. With light gauge I didn't have to adjust much, but larger gauge strings really sound and feel better on the shorter scale Parlor. So, who knows if I'll stick with "bluegrass" gauge. I'm enjoying them now...

I keep the parlor in my home office and in the living room and my other guitars mostly reside in the music room.  I daily play or work on songs on my larger guitars, and grab the Parlor throughout the day when an idea strikes. What a great instrument!

I definitely qualify here. I put Martin SP's on my F-III after stating how much I didn't like them in another thread. And of course they sound great

In one video you can see a quarter being used as a guitar pick.

Good grief! That sent me down memory lane for a half hour. Those were the days ---stupid and invincible. Mercy got me through them alive.
