Title: Forum 3 all hog: string suggestions?
Post by: iDavid on December 16, 2011, 07:16:49 PM
I stopped playing guitar shortly after buying a F3 all hog and now I am back.  I just love this guitar and  was wonder if you guys had any string suggestions.  I have elixir light PB's on it now and like them pretty well, but I think it could use a bit more sparkle.  Maybe EXP's?

I use Curt Mangan 80/20  (http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/cumafuma80br.html) mediums(13/56) on my OM-MT but if you don't want to go with the mediums try the medium lights (12/54). Curts strings have a long life and the 80/20 bronze is brighter and works well with the Hog top.

I love my hog top too ... find that any number of phosphor bronze strings with a hexagonal core do best bring out the complexity and brightness.

The cheapest of the Martin PBs are good.

DR Rare are wonderful, too.

With all of the wood being of the same type, and a hardwood top, these brighter strings bring out a bit more depth, at least to my ear. Look to the hex core! Look to the hex core!

I have found that I prefer 80/20's on my Forum III MT. Have used mainly EXP's because they last forever. Have Newtone 80/20's on right now - could be the best so far. I personally think that PB's are too dull on this guitar.

I've always had PB's, I think I will give the 80/20's a try.

Yes. I do recommend strings on the forum III, all hog or otherwise.
