Title: Does the Larrivee neck keep you playing Larrivees?
Post by: DaveyO on November 26, 2011, 07:57:23 PM
Just wondering, If you all have other guitars that differ from the Larrivee neck?
Or , do you have 1 or more Larrivees because you like the neck feel?

I have guitars with different necks. I actually like a more full rounder neck, or a bit of a V neck more than Larrivee's necks. Larrivee's more modern necks are a bit thin for me...they are fine I can play them and don't have any problem with them...but given my druthers I'd rather have a bit more neck to grab on to.

A while back I made a trade for a J-09 from the mid '90s. It has a 1 3/4 nut and the neck is a bit more rounded than the neck that was on my Forum guitars. That one makes me smile when I grab it...

I have a Recording King with a 1 13/16" V neck and even though I play it with no problem I prefer the shallow Larrivee neck.

My Guilds and Larrivee's have a pretty close feel or at least I don't notice a diference in feell anymore and I'm a very happy owner of both.Gigged on my LS10,my OM03PA and my Guild JF30 tonight.3 sets of wonderful bliss in my hands.

The Larrivee CS-05 I have has a fuller feel to the neck but plays fine.  That said I tend to prefer the very thin necks on my older Taylors.

I began playing Seagull guitars, which are a bit wider than most dreads. So I'm used to the size and feel of that. My oo-03 has a very similar neck with the 1 3/4" nut and slim feel, and I like it a lot. The SD has a wider and thicker neck. I can play it just fine but I notice fatigue comes quicker with the bigger neck. I sold my Alvarez recently because the neck was just to narrow to play well. I find the 1 3/4" slim works best for me.

My Larrivees do not feel substantially different than my Martin or Breedlove.

My D-03R-12 neck is a little thin for comfort, I like a thicker neck on a 12 (like a Guild) to get more leverage.

Neck is very comfy up to around 7 fret, then it flattens out, which I really dont like. Maybe the compound radius has some function I'm not aware of but I prefer conventional necks.

I think the Larrivee fretboard is too flat.  It's playable, but not as comfortable as some other guitars.  My Larrivee D-03 SO is set up to the exact same measurements at the nut and 12th fret as my old Taylor 110.  The Taylor was much easier to play.  So is a cheap Alvarez I own.  The Larrivee tone keeps me playing it, but not the neck.

I think Larrivee's are wonderful guitars, and at a great price point. My Favorite was an OM 50 followed by an L 10.

But I just don't get along with the very flat fretboard radius so there aren't any larry's in the herd anymore.

I really like the neck on my L-07 (or else I've just gotten so accustomed to it).  It's actually a soft-V shape and not so rounded as the current Larrivee necks.  It has a radius of approx. 20" and is not compound as far as I can tell with my radius gauges.

My 1985 L 12-string however, causes my left hand to cramp after awhile.  It's flatter, rounder, and wider (of course) than the L-07.  I'm not sure if it's the neck shape that caused this, or just the fact that it is wider than a 6-string.  I suspect it's the width though.  I don't know what it's radius is as I'd have to remove the strings to measure it.

The fingerboard doesn't flatten out until after the 12 fret.Sounds like some tweaking is needed on your setups.Like I said I like the feel of the Larrivee neck it fits real nice in the cup between my thumb and first finger.

On my L07, the radius is the same (about 20") at the first and last fret.  I assume that at some time in the past the Larrivee necks were cylindrical and they went to compound at some point.  Anyone know if this is true and if so, when they made the transition?

I love the Larrivee neck. Perfect for me. My D28 Martin had a neck that was far thicker and made the instrument much harder to play for me.   :nana_guitar

Funny this topic should come up.  I traded in my LV05 last year.  It was an agonizing decision.  The guitar looked and sounded incredible.  I loved the body shape.  The materials used were impeccable and the price I paid was ridiculously low.  But I NEVER GOT ALONG WITH THE NECK.  The wide broad flat profile was reminds one of a classical type neck (which is where Larrivee began after all).  When faced with the choice, I held on to my Martin D28 with narrower nut 1 11/16 and rounded low profile neck profile.
If Larrivee was to offer a choice of different neck profiles like Martin does and offer an L body with a 1 11/16 nut, I would jump right back in with both feet!! In every other way I miss that wonderful instrument very much.

interesting...  I usually have just one of my guitars out at a time and play that one exclusively...  I just switched from playing my Martin D-35 to playing my L-05 a few weeks ago.  The other day I got the Martin back out and find I am having a hard time going back to the Martin neck.  Seems like the combination of the chunky neck shape and the thinner fretboard is the problem.  Thinking about selling the Martin but the market is so bad right now.... guess I can wait, maybe next week it will feel different!

I'm in the "too thin" camp.  I've always said if I could get a Taylor-like neck on my OM-03 it would be the perfect guitar.

Actually, I got my Larrivee because of the neck.  I sold my Taylor because the neck was uncomfortable and searched for a while for one that suited me.  Strangely enough, in contrast to the previous post, I find the Taylor neck too think and the Larrivee more beefy.

I also can handle beefier necks like my U profile Rainsong neck.

It's of course all about horses for courses. Bottom line for me is I that I  just love the Larrivee neck wheather it is the D neck or the L and OM neck.

I have no problem, at all, with the necks on my L and Parlor, but the neck on the RS-4 is sweet, sweet honey.  Best neck on an electric ever.

A very difficult subject that I'm reluctant to talk about ... I bought an L-09 Commemorative last year and it is more beautiful and articulate than any guitar I've ever owned. The boast of even tone is well deserved. But I find myself fighting with it to play and be comfortable with it. Action is low, intonation spot on, neck is smooth, etc. But I find myself playing my Recording King RO-16 and RP-06 a lot more - the RP-06 is a new model for RK, a 0 size perlor 12-fret slot-head and I'm playing the dickens out of that guitar. Both the RK's have great playability.

Being totally honest, I don't know if it's the guitar or me - I am a large man and can't hold a guitar on my lap like I used to as a skinny kid ... the RP-06 on the other hand is really nice for holding - unconventionally - by pinching the lower bout between my right thigh and upper arm ... I can hold it at about a 45 degree angle and it feels so resonant ... the L-09, because of it's size and I'm certain some because of its neck, just aren't comfy for me ... yet ... I'm determined to hang onto it until I've lost the weight (which is going very well, thank you) - I'd hate to sell it only to find out it was me and not the guitar.

I love the feel of classical guitars so the wide flatter neck of my L03 is a perfect fit for me. Almost purchased a Martin D15 but the neck just was not a good fit for me. Martin's new neck design on it's performance series guitars is very nice and is now being offered as an option on the classic D18 AND D28          ( D28p  D18p)
