Title: HEAD MACHINES
Post by: GUITARMANDAN on September 15, 2011, 07:09:40 AM
My new/used 2004 L-03 Koa arrived yesterday and I must say, for a used guitar, it plays wonderfully. I love the sound of the Koa and while it's still not as silky as my Taylor 814, I really like this guitar.

Here's a question: on the tuning pegs(the part you use your fingers to turn/tune the strings) the screws that "must" hold them in seem to have backed out to where on two of them I can see a fair amount of threads. I tried to tighten/screw them back into the peg, but they are really, really tight and I don't want to break, strip or ruin them. Any ideas why these screws would back out and why I can't get them to screw back in? :crying:

They are holding tune fine however. The machines turn smoothly when I turn the finger peg and they don't back off or slip. Those two actually are backed out so much that they don't even look right. But the screw heads match all the others which those seem to be seated into the peg and into the the machine gears.

Thoughts? :?

A couple of questions. Are they the original tuner buttons? Are you tightening the screw's with string tension? If there the ebonite black looking buttons from Larrivee there should be a spring inside the screw hole which adds tension which helps keep the button tight. At the next string change or if you want detune the guitar and pull the screws out and check that they match, you can also look for the spring at this time.As always if I can be of help email,PM or call.

Mine are the OEM Larrivee metal/chrome buttons, not ebony. The machines are stamped Larrivee on the back side. It just looks odd with screws sticking out. Thanks for ALL your help and answers to my crazy questions to all the forum members. :donut :coffee

Those screws shouldn't be sticking out.If they are they might be replacement for screws that might have been lost.I'd check with the seller to see if they ever had other bottons on them.

The owner did tell me that the buttons that were on there OEM were plastic/ebony and she replaced them with metal ones. So this might be the reason the screws are not fitting right? She replaced ONLY the buttons, not the machines or pegs. But I'm also trying to tighten the screws back in with the tension still ON the strings. Makes a difference????

With the strings at tension the screw will not turn very much as there is a bit of push on the botton post conecting to the gear inside. If you have one tuner with no problem when you change the string the next time remove it or even bring the guitar to your favorite tech as most of us have a box of old used tuners to steal parts from.

SWEET! I'm getting ready to change the strings this weekend, so I'll try to tighten the screw a bit since there will be no tension on it.

Thank you guys for ALL your great advice on this forum. :thumb

If there the wrong screws and you can't find them let me know as I have a used set of Pings from a Larrivee sitting in a box.
