Title: Gluing a top
Post by: sawdustdave on August 30, 2011, 12:54:06 PM
Folk:
I'm beginning a build of my first guitar. It will be sized as an OM, spruce top, walnut back, sides, and neck. Not certain about anything else on it, yet.. I have so far purchased board for the top from Stew-Mac (nice folks, there!) The back/sides/neck are from a board a friend had laying around for almost 20 years.

My question is this:  when I glue the top halves, how can I keep the glue from spreading and soaking into the wood near the joint? I'm worried about using too little glue and starving the joint for fear of staining the top, or, using too much and having glue soak into the spruce and ruining what should be a nice looking guitar.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Dave

When putting the two together, be certain the side facing you is what will be the outside. Then simply wipe off the excess glue that squeezes out. That sound right?

Hope it all works out for you. I'd wish you luck but I'm not sure it works.

Basically, how I was taught to do it. It has worked well for me so far...
