Title: Open D string buzz/rattle
Post by: Bunghole on July 16, 2011, 11:59:20 AM
Hi,

I'm playing a relatively new Larrivee OM-09 that came with Schellar tuners.

I've noticed that after one week of not playing it (it has been in the case the whole time) the D string started to buzz / rattle when it is played open.
When I listen closely I can easily hear that this is not a fret buzz problem and that the rattle sounds different, it's light and it comes from the headstock almost for sure.

Can it be that the tuner of the D string is in some way loose? Is this thing fixable, is it a simple fix? Or perhaps that tuner needs to be replaced with a new one?

I'll appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Ezer

This is easy to check when you change the strings, but right now you can take the tension off the string, and see if anything on that tuner - the post, the nut, the button - feels loose or rattly. A 10mm socket or nut driver will usually tighten up the nut if it's loose - not too tight, though, just nice and snug. You might also try gently wedging a small bit of cloth under the strings behind the nut and see what effect that has. If you aren't comfortable with that, take it to a shop and have a tech take a quick look at it. But I'd change the strings before I did that - amazing how many problems a fresh set of strings can solve.

I would just add to check all the tuners for loose parts, not just the D string tuner.

Thanks a lot guys,

At first I took the tension of the D string and tightened the base of the tuner, ot had some way to go but didn't solve the problem.
So I took off all the strings and tightened all the tuners bases, then I installed a fresh set of strings.
For now it seems like it solved the problem perfectly!   :nana_guitar

You have helped me a lot, I appreciate it. :beer
