Title: Dealer Ad's
Post by: rdamato on December 06, 2004, 06:07:42 PM
While the guys at Notable and Guitar Adoptions are a valuable asset to this board, I feel the ads they place should have their own heading.
Just an opinion.

Theyboth post in the For Sale section, so what's the problem?  I personally love to look at what they have for sale.

I avoid them (dealer posts) at home because of the slow dialup connection, but they make it pretty clear what they contain, so there is no problem if you don't want to look at them. I do look when I take a break at work since the connection is so much faster. They also give good advice and honest opinions. I think they add to the forum.

Because we don't have the heavy traffic of some larger forums it's really easy to reviews posts in the Buy/Sell section. There just aren't that many. I can't imagine anyone really being inconvenienced by our dealer posts. Seems very appropriate for them to keep posting the same as the rest of us. I admit to being biased. I like all of these guys and like looking at their stuff. I do think dave or jason should give me 60% off on a 00050 for my dealer support here and to make ducktrapper jealous :P

I have no problem with Jason, Dave or other reputable dealers posting in Buy, Sell, Trade. After all that section of the Forum isn't called "Buy, Sell, Trade: but only if you aren't a dealer!"

I just got a great deal on an L-09 that I wouldn't otherwise have known about if Dave hadn't put up his holiday sale posting. We do have the choice of not looking at these posts...  B)

I like seeing the new stuff even if I'm dirt poor.

If you did make a new section, I like the term some people on the forum use of 'Serious Guitar Porn' as section title.

some of the other forums i've participated in over the years forbid dealers from posting their wares, however many forums don't have a for sale section unlike the larrivee forum.  so long as the adds are in the for sale section it doesn't seem to be a problem to me.

in any case, like a moth to ultraviolet light, a shark to blood or a dung beetle to dung, i find myslef being inexplicably drawn to all the adds that Jason and Dave or others post and never pass up a chance to check them out.  so it actually makes the forum that much more interesting to me, which is not to say the forum wouldn't be interesting without adds.

rdamato,

I proposed a similar thing a long time ago and was summarily shouted down:

http://www.larriveeforum.com/forums/index....estion,and,zach (http://www.larriveeforum.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=1041&hl=suggestion,and,zach)

I thought it would be nice to have a commercial For Sale section where Dealers could post their inventories. Thought it would be helpful to see at a glance but not clutter other areas for those who didn't want to wade through the ads. (or be seduced by the porn!)

Others disagreed, sometimes strongly. Oh, well. We move on.

I also was uneasy about the dealer ads.

If its only a couple of dealers it may continue to be OK. My concern was that if suddenly more dealers started putting ads up on a regular basis that it might be too much.

I don't much care either way but ...
HEY JIMMYD! This could start a bidding war, if you're not careful. Alright, who will sell me a 000-50 @ 70% off just so Jimmy can go chew ice?  ;)

At one point a while back there were problems in the add area,a couple of dealers got pissed off.Since then with the advertising rule changes no dealer can post the real price just the MAP.Also since then most of those dealers have left or visit less.To be honest I think its just Dave,Jason and me as dealers onthe forum.I think we police ourselves quite well ok Dave post the most porn and is and evil man and should be band from the site but what the heck its all in good fun and abuse...... :D

When I first started to hang out here I did think it was a bit odd that dealers posted as much as they did.  However, their contribution to this forum is so valuable and they are all such great people.  Not only that but I know they give killer discounts to the members of this forum.  I believe I even remember one of the dealers recently making a purchase from one of the others.  How cool is that.

There are lots of other places to go if you don't like dealer posts. Personally, I think it's to our advantage to be cruising through the Larrivee Guitar forum and come across a dealer's ad. I might pick up a good deal that I otherwise might have missed. I also think it's great to see the new guitar models that show up there that i would not have seen otherwise. I think we should be thankful for those guys. I bought from Jason and have received valuable information from him and the other dealers. Except for Unclrob's persistent begging for donuts B)  i see no problem with them posting deals wherever they wish.  It's to our advantage. They don't trick us into viewing their ads. They usually are clearly titled. Don't wanna read it? Skip it.

I think the dealer postings are great, but only because of the great people behind them.  They are the most helpful and nice bunch.  All of the dealers will go out of their way to help someone out of the kindness in their heart, not because they are trying to sell you something.

I completely disagree with that one thing. I believe that the dealers on this forum ARE trying to sell guitars. That is their business. I don't think that is a bad thing though. The thing is not that they aren't salesmen. The thing is that they are honest salesmen. Give me an honest salesman any day.

I believe that before it ever got out of hand, the moderating team would provide "guidance" to any inconsiderate dealers.

Information provided with tact, courtesy and fellowship is invaluable.

Information presented without same is intolerable.

Me, I think everything's OK here.

That's my opinion, for a reasonable new forumite.

Also, I think too many others have more guitars than I have! But, I endeaver to persevere!     :D

To me I find that it is christmas time all the time when Dave or Jason or unclrob shows us something, they put it out there, if we bite we bite, if we swim around it for awhile that's okay too.  But I understand that for some of the slower computers it could be frustrating but seriously is it not fun to look at all the cool stuff they show us.
Personally unclrob I sent you an In-In-Out burger (double-double by the way) but given the fact that they are like etable gold I am sure the ups guy ate it.

I see their postings and pictures as an insidious ploy to draw me in and tempt me with beguiling pictures of naked guitars.
Oh, the shame.... for I can not help myself... I must look ..... Ne, I want to touch and smell the virgin wood... Oh, more the pity, for I can not be with them all.

(but keep 'um coming, anyway.. ;) .. plus you guys have more than proven your willingness to help forum members in many ways...
