Title: RS 4 splitting pickups?
Post by: jazznan on April 26, 2011, 04:57:51 PM
Hi ya'll just bought my first Larrivee, a Tobacco Burst RS 4!

I wanted to get some country tones out of it, and I like what I get, but I was wondering how I could split the bridge pickup for a single coil? or What else could I do to twang it out a bit more? thanks

Firstly I assume you have the Humbucker

Guess you could split both, put push pull on both volumes for the split anything else would require something more evasive to the guitar mod and I wouldn't do that. Hope this helps.

I have the humbuckers and know nothing about modifcations, so is this something, the push pull thing, that will adversely affect my guitar in anyway? Thanks

Take to a GOOD guitar tech and ask for a single coil switching the set up would be your preference talk to the tech about that. Should be done for less than $100

UnclRob :? :?

Splitting the pickup can be done really easily with the use of the Seymour Duncan Tripleshot rings - However the pickup itself has to have 4 conductor wiring (Seperating the start and finish wire of both coils). By default we use the traditional 2 conductor push back braided wiring so that makes it much more difficult. Your best bet would be to buy a new 4 conductor pickup and one of the tripleshot rings (les paul style in cream or black). I could make you a 4 conductor pickup but its custom work and probably wouldnt be too cheap.

Thanks, I'll consider these options...but for now, I like the tone I'm getting and will probably just buy a compression pedal to maximize the already twangy tone I'm getting, thanks

But really if it is more Twang you are chasing I would simply holdout for the new larrivee Tele style due out any day now  :winkin:

Can't imagine a mod that will outdue that in the Twang department

I noticed Johnny Hiland plays a Humbucking PRS so....maybe someone knows how that one works?

Volume and push/pull tone control (splits Bass pickup) with a 3-way blade pickup selector (http://www.prsguitars.com/hiland/specs.html)

I see, thanks for the info, so this mod could be done on the RS 4 as well, but it would need a new pickup, push-pull and switch selecto, correct?
