Title: GS Mini Taylor... Am I the only one?
Post by: eded on November 22, 2010, 06:48:41 AM
I've been wanting to try one since I first saw them advertised.  I was really enthused based on the size and scale length.  I finally ran across one yesterday and boy was I disappointed.  It felt and played just fine, great even.  Based on the other reviews I read, I expected it to sound great.  Not the case.  It sounded very similar to the Baby Taylor next to it.  Lacking in bass and accentuated trebles.  Brash is the word that comes to mind.  The Big Baby was much nicer (and I'm not real fond of them).

Am I the only person who hasn't been swept off their feet?

Been very curious and haven't found one yet - too bad about the sound. Oh well, the money stays in the pocket!

You might want to ask that question on a different forum.

As all guitars and players are different I wouldn't count them out on a single trial.  That one may well have been bad however.  I haven't tried one yet and am considering one to replace my Baby Taylor.  I just need to find one to try.

I think there has been alot of hype about that model, and so the inventories are tight and maybe the expectations a bit high -

IMHO, you cannot get great bass from a small body/small top guitar. There are alot of great small guitars out there, but you need to play them to find one that speaks to you - not a model, but a specific guitar. A while back the Larrivee Parlors were "it", then the 00's - I've played alot of smaller bodies trying to find one that really appealed to me, and right now this little SC Style 1 I found is pretty close, but I'm still not convinced that it'll be a keeper. Most days nothing smaller than a 000 sounds "full" enough to me, although the "H" usually makes it.

I still think the best small body guitar you can find is a Larrivee 12-fret LS - its the best combo of body size, scale length, and price - now if we could only convince them to make it with a 1-13/16 nut and 2-5/16 saddle - that would be pretty incredible -

I have found EVERY Taylor I have tried disappointing. Beautiful, well made, great neck, but wimpy whiny and wussy sounding :whistling:

The Baby was the most disappointing git I ever played. At least with a Martin Backpacker I wasn't expecting tone.

I'll  never part with my parlor.  And I can't see getting tired of my OOV-03 short scale.  I get enough bass out of both.  With the GS it just wasn't there.  Based on the reviews, I was ready to be blown away.  Maybe Nashville tuned it would shine.

It's a Taylor, of course it sounds bad.

It's not just you Ed but most who try it are quite impressed.

I got seduced  in all the Taylor GS Mini hype and ordered one through L&M.
Waited anxiously and finally picked it up a few weeks ago.
It sounded good in the store and I was anxious to get it home.Played it for 3-4 days and found I just didn't bond with it.There were a lot of cosmetic flaws
that you  don't normally see on Taylor's , that I didn't really notice at the store.I didn't feel comfortable with the medium gauge strings.
Anyway, I ultimately did  return the guitar and got a refund.(First time I ever did this ,and am grateful L&M have this policy in effect).
I loved the gig bag though !!!

I have a Taylor GS Mini as does my friend. Both guitars sound equally amazing for their size and given the fact that the sides and back are laminates.

I think the GS Mini is an amazing travel guitar but I do think they are a bit large..
