I just acquired one of the limited runs of L-02. This is my first L-model. All I can say is WOW! I love how it can truly handle all kinds of playing.
When I checked with Larrivee, I found out that the backs and sides weren't made with sapele--AS ADVERTISED. They were made with khaya mahogany. I was surprised by this since it was listed with sapele backs and sides. I am ok with either wood.
It seems to me that the clear delineation regarding species of "mahogany" is becoming more cloudy.
The 3-piece neck is flawlessly done. I can't tell where the headstock joins the neck.
All-in-all, this is one fine guitar. I have added some pics of the back and sides.

Your back and sides look just like my new OM03 I just purchased, and even though Elderly advertised it as Sapele, the warranty card list it as MH. The back and sides of mine look so close in color and grain as the neck I can't tell either way. All I know is the woods looks great against the Maple binding, and sounds great. Yours is a nice looking guitar as well.

Could've fooled me, looks like sapele to me :), but I didn't build it so Khaya it must be if that's what Larrivee told you. I didn't think they used khaya.
Very nice! Did you happen to get this from buffalo brothers?
I did not buy this from Buffalo Brothers.

My OM-03 is Khaya.

Looks beautiful.Congrats. :nice guitar:
Nice guitar & good playing! I'm missing my L-10 a bit, being able to play virtually anything on it. But, my smaller mahogany gits are doing me fine for now. Plus the walnut one. :nice guitar:
Isn't Sapele "African Mahogany", Khaya being about the same? All of the Sapele guitars I've seen tend to be a little darker & having vertical stripes on them, giving it a cool but totally different look. Your hog looks almost the same as SA Mahogany, which I don't get either, based on the description. "Super Dave" said his looks about the same, but has MH on the inside, being HOG.
I A/B'd 2 OM-03s about 2 years ago, one older stock (HOG), the other new & Sapele. Ended up buying the Sapele one, sounding much better. I prefer SA HOG over Sapele normally, so this was a weird one for me. Seems like many are getting some nice surprises from Larrivee, as I've found to be par for the course.
The 3-piece neck I saw had a line where the headstock started & the neck ended (or joined?). Sounds like you have one that much detail went into.
Check out the HOG on this '08 OM-05 that I let go to Jim Holler during the F-III build. Big mistake, have made many, but we learn from them? Or, are supposed to?

Hi Jeff,
Letting that '08 OM-05 go must be hard to take--especially when looking at the pics. It looks like a beaut' to me. The neck has some great pattern.
The various woods that are being marketed as mahogany makes me quite confused. The back and sides on my L-02 look much like the SA mahogany on my other guitars. Oh well, I guess it does not ultimately matter as long as I have a great guitar--which I do
Take care,
