Title: Add him to the list, Jimmy Whalsteen
Post by: Long813 on August 12, 2010, 01:14:16 PM
So I just watched Don Ross & Jimmy Wahlsteen play last night at a bar and I was so inspired by it all. I've heard Don Ross before, wasn't a huge fan, but seeing him live was so much different!

For the forum though, Wahlsteen plays two beautiful Larrivee's, I think one was a L-03MT and the other seemed to be a LV-10. The LV was so amazing, pyramid bridge, the inlays, wow! They both had what looked to be a fossilized bone nut, flowed very well with the darker binding on the hog top. They both sounded suburb, I definitely can't make my L-03 sing like that yet.

And I think they are both rosewood B/S, but the -10 looked so much nicer than anything I've seen, could it have been braz?

I've also never seen someone hybrid pick so nicely, and to add, since he does hybrid pick, he invented his own device to get that 'thump'. He calls it the left thumb rimshot, and it's a metal ring with a mic (I assume) he put on his thumb, and taps the back of the neck.

He's now one of my favourite guitarists. Congrats on Don Ross picking him up to candy rat!

Sounds like a good player. I have never seen a mahogany top on a rosewood guitar. It may be a cedar top, or just a very darkened sitka spruce. I had a D-09 that was very dark sitka spuce, it looked like honey.

Jimmy is a crackin player previously highlighted in the Larrivee Guitar Players thread:

I think the cutaway guitar you refer to is a LSV11E - lovely  :winkin:

Yup, could have very well been mistaken as I don't know the models all that well, nice guitars either ways :D
