Title: Dread Heads
Post by: JohnM2001 on August 10, 2010, 03:20:33 PM
How many forumites out there with more than one Larrivee dreadnaught guitar?  If so, do they have different woods?  I just love the big sound, and they usually sound huge when playing up the neck with capo.  One thing for sure, there are usually lots of used Larrivee D guitars out there, usually priced lower than L or OM Larrys.   Mine is a sapele D-02, but I was thinking of adding another used Larrivee.  The best deals seem to be on D-03 guitars, most of them are the older ones with real mahogany back & sides, and many of those seem to have the yellowish tops I associate with Engelmann, which they used back in 2007-08 on 02/03 guitars.  Scoring one of those for $500-600 is a pretty sweet deal.  So tell us about your dread(s).

I have a Larrivee D-03 MT that is really, really nice!  Gotta love the hog tops!
I also have a Furch build Stanford guitar.......a 12 fretter Dred with spruce top, rosewood back/sides, and 1 3/4 inch neck with slot head.  Very, very nice.  And......it only cost me $800.  You would swear it was a $3000 guitar....no lie!

I LOVE Dreds   :nanadance

I have two dreads....one is a D-O3R.My other is from another builder.

As for my 2008 Larri "D",I cannot say enough good things about it!Sweet, powerful and really,"really" well built...I love the O3 vibe, which lends more of the "wood' natural look.Nice and natural in appearance, which shows off the superb woods in use.

My other dread is a KILLER Bourgeois "custom".Braz/Adi,and alot more money. In comparison, the Larrivee is a real bargain.....You cannot go wrong here, for sure!!

  Good luck

I love my koa D-03. Maybe the guitar I have played the most, at least before I had shoulder problems starting 3 years ago.

If I was in the market for a D-03, I might wait for one in blackwood. They seem to show up once in a while.

I love the dread.  I have D-03R that is probably the best sounding guitar I have played/heard.  That is my go to guitar and I play it every day.  I sold two dread cutaway guitars to buy her and have not regretted the decision yet.  The fullness and tonality of the guitar will turn heads, and I have had a few people who play more name brand rigs tell me (in confidence of course) that they will be looking to buy a Larrivee as their next guitar.

My other dread is a Seagull S6, the ceder top on this one looks like Willy Nelson has been playing it, it passed through at least 10 people before it found a home on my wall.  I take this guitar to the beach and camp fires, it has seen a few live gigs as well.  Really has some Mojo to it, I learned to play guitar on this and fell into buying it cause it was different then all the other guitars in the shop, beet up and bruised but sounded so good, knew nothing about Seagulls or guitars for that matter, it feels more raw then the Larrivee but in a good way, she is defiantly well loved and I recently took it in to the shop and had a custom bone nut and saddle made for it, along with a good setup.  It sounds better then ever.  If you saw it you would probably say its worthless - but to me it is priceless.  My S6 has been a better friend to me then most of my well ... friends  :laughin:

I love my d-03r!  It's just to big for me to be comfortable with.  It's in the classifieds for $650 by the way (wink, wink).
