Title: Strings, again I know
Post by: BenF on August 07, 2010, 06:36:43 AM
I ordered my usual Newtone Masterclass PB 12-54s for my forum III (Italian spruce over RW), but they set my 80/20 Bronze in error. Do you think they will be overly bright? I am torn between returning them or giving them a go. Never tried anything but PBs from any brand before.

They are the same guage, and I guess they might sound snappy on my Guild if I don't like them on the Larry.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I say give the 80/20's a go. Strings by mail has just picked up Newtones and I look forward to trying them. What is distinctive about the more expensive Newtone doublewound strings ? Is it similar to Dean Markleys new Helix wound strings?  With all the cares of life it's amazing we guitar heads remain passionate about strings. We are a strange breed.

Never tried the ones you mentioned either. I find their PBs head and shoulders above the competition. It's also good in the UK because they are priced equally with the others. I understand they are a good bit more overseas.

I'll give the 80/20s a go I think. Like you say, nothing ventured........

I've tried the Newtones several times and they are an excellent string, the doublewounds are a compression wrap similar to what the DR Sunbeams and Curt Managan use, twice the wrap keeps the crude out and add mass for better contact with the core, well worth the up charge do to the longer life and a bit more level sustain (ring before dropping out of tune). Here in the States though the Sunbeams are so much cheaper with similar characteristics it's hard to spend the buck on the Newtone.

I think you'll find the 80/20's do favor your Guild's and Gibsons more so than the Larrivee, but that's something only your ear can tell, be sure and let the new string sizzle burn off before deciding though.

btw, I enjoy string threads, always seem to be something in there for thought.

Well they are on. Certainly sounds different. I wouldn't say any better or worse yet, just different. I'll let them bed in before making further judgement.

Hey Ben...this is off topic, but I watched and enjoyed your "Time of No Reply" vid, so I just had to reply

Thanks for sharing! Hope you like the strings - believe it or not, I still have the orig strings in my FIII.

I was going to change them last night, but I ended up spending too much time here in the Forum because of the Forum V buzz.

Thanks for the nod

Speaks a man who ca play the ruddy thing. I need all the help I can get to make it sound good duck.

Phil, I think I prefer the PBs, these are very bright, but I'll see how they bed in. They are nice played softly, and strummed with nails gently, but if you dig in they twang a bit and lack depth of tone. Seems a waste in such a tone rich guitar.

Well, it took me years to reach my pinnacle of understanding where I can stop caring about ephemeral and unimportant details. I've heard you play, by the way, and you don't exactly stink.
