Title: wtb:hog top
Post by: BJofIndiana on February 08, 2010, 12:16:32 AM
gas pains developing for all mahogany.  What's available?  Low cash, but thought i'd post anyway.
Any neglected Martin 15's?  I've told myself not to pay more than I paid for my Stanford.
Probably should buy a cheap gas mask instead!

The all mahogany models are usually identified by an MT (mahogany top).  For example, mine is an L05MT.  It is an L05 with a mahogany top.  You can find parlors, oms Ls and dreads with a mahogany top in the 03 or 05 appointment levels.  Forum guitars have also been made with mahogany tops.  Let me know if you want to see pics of mine and I cn email them to you.  Larrivee mahogany top guitars are very special in my mind.  Loved mine since I bought it in 04.

As Jeff described perfectly;   any Larrivee with MT after the model number is an all mahogany guitar.
My feelings about Larrivee mahogany topped guitars are pretty well known around here by now.   I like them a lot and I find myself becoming more and more of a fan of that hog sound.  I've also had a Martin D-15 all hog that I never bonded with.    If you are thinking of going "hog wild" you could do a lot worse than any of the MT Larrivee models.    My Forum III all hog is a real good example and I think the soon-to-be-built
Forum IV will be very special as well.

If you do a search on past posts here, you will find many references that state how well Jean Larrivée does Mahogany.

Some say,  "none better"...

I know I sure love my OM-03 MT     ds   :beer

I have had the pleasure of playing Jeff's L05MT. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer "hog top." A fine guitar indeed. I've owned a Martin D-15 and two Martin OO-15 models. Both were nice guitars, but Jeff's Larrivee is in another class IMO.

This is my L-05MT. I have had it for about 4 years now.
It may be worth mentioning that I sold two CF Martin 15 series, but I have two Larrivee mahogany top guitars and another on the way later this year. You will note that the Martins don't look like these, and they don't sound like them, either.

Thanks to Neal for the compliments on the L05MT.  I'll have to get it together to learn how to post photos.  It is one nice guitar and has brought me 5 years of pleasure learning to pick and play on it.

After buying a mint used L05MT for my son in December (he is paying me back on time), I can tell you it is a phenomenal instrument.  There is no comparison to a martin 15 mahogany.  Spend a little more and buy the Larrivee.  You will not be disappointed.  They are absolutely beautiful to look at, with that gloss top gleaming in rich mahogany.  And the sound is incredible.

I've seen Standford sell new for less than $600, I haven't seen a used Larrivee hogtop sell for that price.  $700-$800 used range is realistic.

Maybe you know, but there is a really sweet looking OM-5MT on ebay right now. Been posted about 5 times now each time declining in starting price. $1K seems fair.

Good luck!
