Title: Video recording on the Zoom Q3
Post by: Lon Milo DuQuette on December 20, 2009, 11:49:41 AM
I got myself a Zoom Q3 Handy Video Recorder the other day and shot this in my office just to test it out. I'm playing my Larrivee OM-03. I'm pretty pleased, and encouraged that this little thing might have been a good investment. Please let me know what you think. Happy Holidays! Lon

That thing rocks! Is that the mic on the unit or did you use another mic source. The video quality is great also!

I have since looked at that camera. It looks like a great tool. That mic set up is awesome! Lets see . . . what can I sell?

Very nice playing and singing.

The video signal is very nice ... wondering if apart from the built in stereo mics if there is also an input for external mics or a line in. That would be the killer app.

Thanks for sharing!

Just looked up the spec for the Q3 and no external mic inputs  :doh  ...but then thinking about it ....wouldn't make any sense if it did as its been designed as a complete "all in one" video &/or audio recording device thats compact and simple to use, kudos to the designers for just keeping it so  :thumbsup  They can always add a more complex model to the range as they have with their audio only products..... I'm guessing that'll be the called Q5  :whistling:

Good post, very nice performance, and a cool piece of hardware. Didn't know they made things like that! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone!
No, it doesn't accommodate an external mic. and I didn't have my guitar amped. I took about 10 mins and positioned it in a couple places while wearing my headset just to try to the the guitar/vocal balance right. But once I had that I went ahead and did it in one take.

I enjoy youtube as a way to share music, so I just ordered one of these.  I had the H2, and liked it, but had to sell it for a deposit on my F-III.  I kind of wished I had the H4.  It looks like this does most of what the H4 does but with video too.  Looking forward to playing with it by the weekend!!

I was looking at the Q3 a couple weeks back. There have been comments on the net about lighting issues with this item. The person helping me told me about updates available for it. You should look into it!

Q3 updates (http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/software/q3.php)

A very cool item! Have fun!

That seems to be its downfall, along with a shaky picture if you walk about filming something. It is clearly aimed at musicians and YouTube. I've been used to filming with an iPhone, so lighting issues should be better than that. That is what the light switch is for in my living room, I believe.

Cheers for the info though, I'm just being cheeky.

Dave, I take it all back, the lighting issue was pretty severe, as you will see from my first attempts on YouTube.  I just followed your link and installed the update - fantastic, thank you very much.  I am one of these people who buys something, and if it works, i tend not to mess around with updates.  This, however, seems to be hugely worthwhile.

:cheers :cheers :cheers
