Title: L03 Zebrawood
Post by: steelfuzz on November 12, 2009, 12:12:58 PM
Hello,

I've been looking at purchasing a L03 Sapele back and sides. In my search I came across a L03 Zebrawood that is absolutely beautiful. The problem is I have no way of playing one as there is none available in my area.

What does Zebra wood sound like? What other woods does it compare to?

Thanks!

I have an early 90's zebrawood C19. It sounds like very good Indianrosewood with just a touch of the brazilian rw ring to it. Plus is visually superb.

I'm surprised to see Larrivee offer this wood on an 03 level instrument. I think they will sell out fast.

I've been eyeballing the one on Trinity's page. He has an L and an OM. But I need another guitar like another hole in the head so I've restrained myself...

Please tell me how you are able to restrain yourself? Did it involve a twelve step program? :?
My head is full of holes.... :bgrin:

Naw...it involves changing strings on about 12 guitars that don't get used enough as it is!(Not really 12 but it seems like twelve when its time to change strings!).

Anyway...I say make a move on the Zebrawood before they are all sold out. They oonly made a handful.....they won't last forever!

I know it's a personal choice of sound, but would Zebra wood be considered better than Sapele?

I'd jump on it. Just the fact that five were made would be enough, lol. There are hundreds of sapele out there. If you don't like this, I think you'd easily find a trade.

Special edition Larrivees 03's are perhaps the most unique and exotic guitars for around $1000.00. Sapele and Rosewood are fine tone woods for sure. Never the less Bubinga, Zebra, Silver Oak and other alternative woods look beautiful and sound  great.  Bob Taylor admits that there are many fine tone woods to build guitars from but they would not sell in large numbers because they are unfamiliar in the market place. I love the fact that Larrivee as a much smaller company is willing and able to sell these guitars in limited editions at a low price.

I think the alternative tone woods are a way for JCL to explore and continue to refine his passion for wood.  I love my Silver Oak and have been very impressed with Bubinga as well . . . never played a zebrawood Larrivee but I'm sure they're great too.

I may be able to help a bit...not with the L, but I have both Sapele and Zebrawood OMs.

To my eyes, I totally agree - the Zebrawood is stunning, and with a super limited run of 5 each...it's just fun to have something so unique.

To my ears, the Zebrano sounds different from any other Larrivee I've played - still balanced in the beautiful way that only Jean can build 'em, but different. The Zebrano is much more 'in your face' punchy and woody than the Sapele. The Sapele, in comparison, sounds more smooth and refined.   The Zebrano is the loudest OM I've ever played, and it seems to be more responsive to heavier rather than lighter touch. If you're strictly a fingerstyle player that might be a factor, but it could very well just be because it's so new. It still seems a little 'stiff'. The Zebrano is heavier than the Sapele for sure, and it has a unique smell as well. Of course, nothing smells as good as an FIII (or is it the case?).

I'll try to record them both tomorrow for comparison. It's tough to put into words.

I don't post much, so  :donut  :donut2 :donut :donut2 :donut :donut2 for all!

I've played both at Trinity and Randy is correct on the sound plus the appearance. There just wouldn't be too many of those around.
Both my Larrivees are Special Editions and I everything I own is just a little different.

Somebody needs to jump on the 12 string MT L-03 on Trinity's used page too. That's an exceptional guitar at a great price. When I e-mailed Larrivee, they told me they only made 30 all mahogany 12 strings. I know it took a long time for the new QM 12 string L-09 to move too. What else can I say?
