What's your candidate for the Holy Grail of Larrivees? I know they've made some nice guitars, but I think it's hard to top their early presentation models.
I want this L-78 with ivory bridge. I'd be afraid to play it, though. :smile:

I'm with you. An early decked out L. One I saw in early 80's was incredible. Also like 5000.00 then. And yes it did look too pretty to play and indeed was under a glass case.

JCL says the sitka-EIR combo is best, but I might make an exception for Brazilian when it looks like 'noob's. And b/e of the symmetrical bracing Larrivees are easy lefty converts--especially when they have no writing on the headstock. I normally pass on ornate guitars, but 'noob's looks really special. Of course I'd taint it by putting on a tortis pickguard--and on the wrong side for most of you.
I owned two new ones, an L and a D 03, both rosewood. Really liked both, especially the D-03R, but I really love the neck on the older one and the enlarged soundhole has grown on me.
Also a vote for Peter Yarrow's Larrivee, due to his early adoption of the company and its guitars, the story of the guitar's theft and return, and my own presence when he played his first Larrivee back in the 70s. And oh yeah, the fact that he's Peter Yarrow.
I know some of you guys are sick of all the Forum III hype but I must say...this is my holy grail of guitars. The LS body style is the original design that seems to have gotten the company off its feet. As David Wren posted on the 12th Fret website:
"A couple of months ago I stumbled upon the Larrivee Forum and saw that the nice folks there had ordered a special run of custom instruments that were based on the LS body size, but with a 12 fret neck-to-body joint, just like we used to make in the mid '70s when I was with Jean and Grit Laskin in a small workshop on Mt. Pleasant Ave. in Toronto."
The Forum III is a basic, no frills, 03 style guitar that is pure Larrivee and plays whatever you throw at it like a dream. Its like an old dog that never leaves your side.

Close to $8,900 US. It would have been worse, but the US$ has been tanking and that will make a lot of guitars attractive to Japanese players / collectors. It's starting to make sense for them to go through all the hoops and buy a guitar from outside Japan and have it shipped there. I would imagine that with a lot of people putting their guitars up for sale during these economic tough times that every newsman talks about, some of those guitars will be travelling to Japan.
