Title: Sticky Neck
Post by: Jeff on September 17, 2007, 12:39:22 PM
On another forum to which I don't post, someone described exactly a problem I have been experiencing.  When I switch playing from my satin-finished LV-03 to my gloss-finished Univox, the drag between my left hand and the neck increases exponentially.  I mean my fretting hand slows dramatically from the increased friction.  On the other forum, someone recommended "Finger Ease" as a remedy.  I've never used the product and am wondering if anyone has.  I have to say that I'm not real wild about spraying anything on my guitar (although the Univox is practically bullet proof).  Talc was also mentioned as a fix.  Any suggestions?
Jeff

I usually find putting my peanut butter sandwich down helps a lot...   :humour:

On the serious side... I use some spray put called Martin Guitar Polish put out by Guardsman. It is wax free, spritzes on easily and wipes off quickly with a guitar cloth. I am a sweater and this always removes the fingerprints, sweatmarks, etc, etc, and leaves a nice slick finish. No idea what's in it, but you can see it here:

Hey thanks for the suggestions.  I'll try the steel wool first.  Funny--I'm deglossing my glossy guitar's neck while turning my satin-finished guitar's neck glossy from playing!

Mr LV19E -- thanks, my bottle must be old. No caution label, no ingredients. I've had it forever. Question is:
Now that we know what is in it, is there any harm in using it? I've used it on both polished and satin guitars for years with no ill affects (that I know of).

Second question: I can see not drinking it for sure. Absolutely don't get it in your eyes. But, is mineral oil or castor oil an irritant to the skin? I wouldn't slather it on like sun lotion, but I'm sure I get it on my fingers (etc) when I'm wiping things down.

Try some 100% carnuba wax. Not automotive carnuba, it has silicon.
It is a very hard wax and makes the neck slick. Depending on how much you sweat it it will last quite awhile too.

How about vaseline petroleum jelly, your hand won't stick to that.  :humour:
